Driving around Downtown Punta Gorda, Florida
Punta Gorda (/ˌpʌntə ˈɡɔːrdə/; English: Fat Point) is a city in Charlotte County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census the city had a population of 16,641. It is the county seat of Charlotte County and the only incorporated municipality in the county. Punta Gorda is the principal city of the Punta Gorda, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area and is also in the Sarasota-Bradenton-Punta Gorda Combined Statistical Area.
Punta Gorda was the scene of massive destruction after Charley, a Category 4 hurricane, came through the city on August 13, 2004. Charley was the strongest tropical system to hit Florida since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and the first hurricane since Hurricane Donna in 1960 to make a direct hit on Florida's southwest coast. In the immediate years following the storm, buildings were restored or built to hurricane-resistant building codes. The new buildings, restorations and amenities concurrently preserved the city's past while showcasing newer facilities. During this time, Laishley Park Municipal Marina was built and the Harborwalk, Linear Park and various trails were created throughout the city for bicycle and pedestrian traffic

It is the county seat of Charlotte County and the only incorporated municipality in the county. Punta Gorda is the principal city of the Punta Gorda, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area and of the Sarasota-Bradenton-Punta Gorda Combined Statistical Area. Punta Gorda, a small historic town nestled on the shores of pristine Charlotte Harbor, a large estuary off the Gulf of Mexico, is one of the oldest incorporated cities in Florida. Following a hurricane, which came through the city on August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley, a revitalization of the City took place that resulted in buildings being restored or built to hurricane resistant codes. The new buildings, restorations and amenities concurrently preserved the City's historic past while showcasing state-of-the art modern facilities and small city charm. During this time, Laishley Park and Marina was built and a waterfront path along the harbor Harborwalk, a Linear Park that winds through the city next to a scenic stream and various trails were created throughout the City for bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
Punta Gorda, in addition to being recognized for its small town ambiance, biking and walking friendly pathways, and many fine restaurants, is renowned as a boating and fishing paradise. Its prime harbor front location and over 60 miles of canals provide access to both casual day boating and fishing to serious deep sea fishing, sailing and cruising to the Gulf of Mexico. Seventy percent of Punta Gorda's residents live on waterfronts.

The Best Part of Florida? (Charlotte Harbor)
Have you ever been to Florida? What do you think is the best part of the state?
Having spent the last 2 days in the South Western regions of Charlotte Harbor, Punta Gorda and Englewood -- this place takes my vote for the best!! Life is AMAZING here!! We've visited the greenest of national parks, went kayaking with dolphins through the red mangroves, hung out on the most stunning white sanded beaches, and seen alligators, panthers, birds and iguanas enjoying the perfect weather.
It's my first time in Florida since 2007, so it's great to be back with fresh eyes and new perspectives. All I know for sure is that the tropical natural beauty of this state is unparalleled to the rest of the country.

Charlotte Harbor Freedom Swim
Freedom Swim is an non-commercial event which began 23 years ago. On the 4th of July participants swim the 1.5 mile distance from the north side of the southbound US 41 bridge and end up at Harpoon Harry's in Fishermen's Village Punta Gorda.
No fees no payed registration this is a free fun event. It's a happening, not a race, some don't even swim. There are stand up paddleboards, inflatable rafts, inner tubes, even folks on plastic noodles. Kayaks join the procession with dogs on board. Those who swim (last year about 300) make it across the river in 30 minutes.
Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow of Charlotte Harbor Awareness and Preservation for its Future
The Charlotte Harbor Estuaries hold an abundance of species of juvenile and mature fish and other wildlife. Charlotte Harbor as a whole is one of the most productive estuaries in the state of Florida. Dr. Jim Locascio from Mote Marine Laboratory talks about the history, preservation, the present state and conditions of Charlotte Harbor as well as the outcome of our actions now and how it could affect the future of Charlotte Harbor. We hope this video will help show how crucial and important it is to preserve our estuary.
