Whitstable is a seaside town on the north coast of Kent in south-east England, 8 kilometres north of Canterbury and 3 kilometres west of Herne Bay. Whitstable was famous for its 'Native Oysters' which were collected from beds beyond the low water mark from Roman times until the mid-20th century. This is celebrated at the annual Whitstable Oyster Festival.
In 1830, one of the earliest passenger railway services was opened by the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway Company. In 1832, the company built a harbour and extended the line to handle coal and other bulk cargos for the City of Canterbury. The railway has since closed but the harbour still plays an important role in the town's economy.
Whitstable is 3 kilometres (2 mi) west of the seaside town of Herne Bay, 8 kilometres (5 mi) north-east of the town of Faversham and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the city of Canterbury; several small villages lie in between. The suburbs/villages of Tankerton, Swalecliffe and Chestfield are at the eastern end of the town, Seasalter at the west, and South Street at the south. Chestfield has its own parish council. An area of protected woodland and grassland called Duncan Down lies to the south-east.
Whitstable railway station is on the Chatham Main Line, which runs between Ramsgate in East Kent and London Victoria. Other stations on this line include Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Gillingham, Rochester and Bromley South.

Transcript:

Kent coastal week is an annual celebration of the Kent coastline and this year we have the theme of creative coast with over one hundred events right the way from Dartford in the north to Dungeness in the south.
Were here at Margate in Thanet today and this is a little bit of a slice of what's on offer for coastal week, so we've got a story telling session which has been arranged by Thanet coast project and just across the way we've got the wonderful Turner contemporary gallery and they are partners with coastal week this year and as well as some of their regular public events they are working with Thanet coast project on some family events.
The Kent coast has provided inspiration for generations of artists, and coastal week's an opportunity for people to explore the Kent coast, get inspired and get involved in everything from creative workshops to beach art and boat trips to storytelling sessions, so there's an awful lot going on and were very fortunate to have the whole programme externally funded through the European regional development programme and our Kent sponsors southern water and London array.
The events are either free or subsidised, and taking place right round the Kent coast. It's an opportunity to get inspired by the Kent coast, but also to find out about the whole wealth of organisations that are out there doing things throughout the year.
Some of the events are undercover; our big flagship event creative coast at Whitstable is under marquee at Whitstable harbour so we will be able to run activities whatever the weather. But there's a good mixture of boat trips, guided walks but also art workshops indoors and it's a real range there so plenty to pick from and all the activities are listed on the explore kent homepage.
