Hardy's Correspondents and The Woodlanders by Angelique Richardson and Helen Angear,
2017 marks the 130th anniversary of the publication of The Woodlanders, Hardy's novel of marital choice, divorce laws, class mobility and Darwinian struggle set in Little Hintock. It depicts individuals in thrall to desire and the natural law that motivates them. On November 21st 1885 Hardy noted – 'Tragedy. It may be put thus in brief: a tragedy exhibits a state of things in the life of an individual which unavoidably causes some natural aim or desire of his to end in a catastrophe when carried out', and thus he began writing the manuscript which would see publication two years later. On February 4th 1887 he declared it 'in some respects my best novel'.
To celebrate this anniversary the Thomas Hardy Society held a study say in association with The University of Exeter Centre for Victorian Studies on the 22 April 2017 at the Corn Exchange, Dorchester, Dorset.
- Speaker: Angelique Richardson (University of Exeter) and Helen Angear (University of Exeter and Dorset County Museum), 'Hardy's Correspondents and The Woodlanders'

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Thomas Hardy's Cottage, Dorchester
Hardy's Cottage is a beautiful secluded place to visit if you are following the Thomas Hardy Trail through Dorset. The cottage, just outside Higher Bockhapmton, was built by Hardy's great-grandfather in 1800 and little has been altered externally since then.
It is a popular place for tourists to visit and see where Hardy wrote Under the Greenwood Tree and Far from the Madding Crowd.
The cottage is traditionally built from cob and the thatched roof is a wonderful backdrop to the roses, honeysuckle and japonica that climb the walls. Catch the cottage on a sunny Summers day and you won't find a prettier place in Dorset to spend a couple of hours.
The cottage stands at the top of the hill off Cuckoo Lane in Higher Bockhampton and behind it stretches Egdon Heath, which Hardy wrote of in 'The Return of the Native'. Take your walking shoes and enjoy a walk through the woods and beyond into Puddletown Forest.

Thomas Hardy's Wessex (trailer)
Wessex is the ancient name for the south-west part of England which was the stronghold of the old kings of Anglo-Saxon England. The modern name for this county is now known as Dorset, with Dorchester as its country home. This short documentary takes the viewer to the birth home of Thomas Hardy. Hardy is best known for his richly charactered novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles and much poetry. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the region can be heard extracts of Hardy's bleak, retrospective, but moving poetry.

Mavic pro 4K footage in Dorchester, Dorset
First flight of my Mavic pro in Dorchester, Dorset.
This was shot in 4K using normal normal colour profile, Sunny white balance and touched up in Premier Pro CC, rendered in h.264 @ 60mbs 3840x2160 30fps.
- I plan on moving over to d-log for future videos to give a better control with post colour correction, but I'm happy with the first attempt with stock output. The blues in the sky are lost a little in this profile over the green horizon with morning sun - late afternoon shots give a better balance, but using the normal profile gave little room for post control.
Activetrack and Spotlight flight modes used to follow the 4x4.
Video shot in Dorchester outskirts, Hardy Monument and Little Breedy Dorset.
