Exploring Alderley Edge from the Air. Set around a dramatic sandstone escarpment in rolling Cheshire farmland and mature Scots pines and beech woodlands, the Edge has spectacular views, intriguing legends and an ancient mining history.
Trent & Mersey Canal - Festival Park Marina, Etruria
Crumpsall's most famous living poet, the great Mike Harding, once said They've got bloody strange ways at the Strangeways Hotel. I'm here to tell you that they have even stranger bloody ways at the Black Prince Hire Base in Stoke-on-Trent.
You get there early wanting to get away and through the Harecastle Tunnel before BW close it for the night, heave all your kit onto the boat and tell them you don't need instruction cos you've played before. You're on the counter, tiller in hand; ready for offski, when a Black Prince guy leaps aboard saying he's driving it out of the marina and no arguing. I have no way of knowing if this is standard Black Prince policy or just a Stoke thing.
I'm also not sure just who thought it was such a good idea having a windy up and down lift bridge across the marina entrance, only wide enough for a single boat. Maybe it's there for security against marauding Vikings or Scouser's, but it causes all sorts of mayhem for a marina two thirds full of hire boats on turn around day. A regular, arched footbridge would seem to me to have been a much better design.
At the start of the video we see our chosen boat nb Mallard, then see nb The Ivy May (not a Black Prince boat) leaving the marina in a normal manner (what I didn't manage to get on film was him losing his chimney when his crew lost control of the lift bridge) After this, all the video was shot from the pointy end by the good lady wife with a hand held camera, nicely illustrating Black Prince's bloody strange ways. We set off forwards, turned away from the entrance and then THEY BACKED US OUT of the marina, under the windy bridge and onto the cut.
Now, 0nix0 may be pleased to see this demonstration that narrowboats do indeed work well in reverse, but I'm buggered if I can see any reason for making life quite so difficult with this sort of maneuver. Submit your suggestions please, on the back of a used fiver to the usual address.
During our trials and tribulations around the Cheshire and Four Counties Rings aboard nb Mallard we did wonder if it was something we'd done to make the boat list quite so much. Now, having looked at this footage for the first time in several years, it appears poor old nb Mallard was listing badly even on its moorings back at base. Bloody strange ballasting ways at Black Prince as well!
Kingscote Park
Just a little tidying up and soundtrack added for the Friends of Kingscote.

Cycling north from Little Chell to Congleton.
Trent & Mersey Canal - Heartbreak Hill Part Two
A trip of just under three miles north along the Trent and Mersey Canal (Main Line -- Harding's Wood to Middlewich) from The Broughton Arms to Wheelock Lock No 60.
For once a chance to make a video at normal speed rather than time lapsed, although this could be indicative of a lack of footage rather than choice as suggested by the complete absence of the Pierpoint Locks.
