HARIKANYAKA TEMPLE NEAR GURUVAYUR
Every time we make a trip to God’s Own Country, I come back with an intense desire to get back. Sigh!! With the monsoon painting the country in various shades and making the earth and sky extra beautiful, who would want to comeback to the heat of Singara Chennai !!It was our annual trip to Guruvayur and our native place. The crowd at Guruvayur was unbelievable !! It was Ekadasi and the queue was serpentine. But--- no pulling. No pushing. Orderly. Disciplined. Everyone chanting the Lord’s name. Everyone after a bath and clean. The Darshan was great and we were able to come out within an hour.We visited the otherTemplesin Guruvayur. There are quite a few who arenot aware of the existence of otherTempleswhich one HAS to see in Guruvayur. The first and foremost is the Mammiyur Sivan Koil. In the outer Prakaram of the Guruvayoorappan behind theBhagawathyTemple, is a corner from where you gaze towards the direction of theMammiyurSivaTempleand pray. Siva and Parvathy were originally at the spot where theAppanTemplestands now and directed Guru and Vayu to install the Guruvayurappan Idol here, vacated the place and moved over to Mammiyur. It is believed that the worship of Shree Guruvayurappan is complete only when one worships at theMammiyurSivaTemplealso. There is aTemplefor Shree Venkitachalapathi, aChariotShapedTemplefor Shree Parthasarathy and quite a few otherTemplesin Guruvayoor. After going to most of these otherTemples, we had Darshan of a uniqueTemplehere, the existence of which is not known to many.At a distance of five kilometers from Guruvayur, on the Guruvayur – Trichur road , is a small place called Ariyannur, known years back as Hari Kanyakapuram. TheTemplehere is the only one of it’s kind…aTemplewith the Deity, Hari Kanyaka Bhagawathy….knownas Mohini to many, the Avatharam of Mahavishnu at the time of Churning theOceanofMilk.Happened to read just this info. in a magazine two days before we left for Kerala. This prompted me to fish out the Book “Kerala Vijayam” by Shree BharaNeedharan, in which he has given an account of thisTemple. It had rained that morning and the weather in the evening was great. At theTemplesteps we discovered that timings were from 5.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m .and 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. We reached this place by 4.30 p.m and sat on the steps waiting for the Nambudhiri to come and open theTemple.TheTempleis said to be 2000 years old, evident from the weather-beaten walls inside, with perforations galore!! The base is of granite and the walls are of red stone. Taking snaps inside is ruled out. But the best sculptures are inside. TheTempleis supposed to have been built by the greatest carpenter/sculptor/architect, named Perunthachchan, whohas built quite a few temples and palaces. As you enter the first small hall, a lovely carved huge Bali Peetam welcomes you. We cross this and come into the next prakara. On either side of the short alley are halls supported by wooden and stone pillars. The wooden pillars have become smooth and gleaming with age . Then comes the Naalambalam or the small Mandapam infront of the Sanctum Sanctorun. The ceiling of

Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy (an incarnation of Goddess Durga), this temple was built in early 14th century. This temple is one of the ancient Maha Kshethrams. The carved entrance of the temple is a special attraction. People believe that Maha Vishnu has taken the avatharam of Kanyaka here, hence the name 'Hari Kanyaka'. Seeveli, the most popular daily ritual, is nothing but a temple procession of deity held on the temple premises in the morning and in the late evening. It is a colorful procession of elephants, wearing gold-plated caparison (nettipattam), bells, necklaces, etc. One of the elephants is carrying the small decorated idol (utshava moorthy) replica of the presiding deity (Moolavar) with temple priest behind it, followed by other elephants to the accompaniments of rhythmic beating of drums and playing of wind instrument - Nadaswaram. The procession will move slowly around the temple clock wise after regular puja. In popular temples, it is done three times in 7 am. 5.30 pm and 8.30 pm. Seeveli procession at night is a spectacular one, involving more than three elephants. Oil lamps in thousands are lit around the outer temple walls in the evening. The most amazing things are, this daily ritual is done with utter commitment and religious fervor. The entire atmosphere is charged with spiritual exhilaration and blissful ecstasy.
