WRA College Possible Girls Trip
From June 16-20, six College Possible students participated in a 5-day Wild River Academy program on the Minnesota River. The girls learned about their local watershed from key stakeholders in the basin. They also learned how to canoe, camp, and work as a team. We had an awesome trip and can't wait for our next College Possible expedition!
June 16: The group learned about holistic land management at Moonstone Farm in Montevideo, MN. They worked on the farm and took water samples in the nearby creek. Heard about history, geology, and environmental practices.
June 17: The girls paddled 20 miles on the Minnesota River from Morton, MN to Mack Lake Park. The weather was great during the day but thunderstorms hit at night. It was fun to watch the lightning illuminate the tents.
June 18: Paddled from Mack Lake Park to the Harkin Store. Camped at Riverside Park in New Ulm.
June 19: Toured the Water Treatment Plant in New Ulm. Visited the Harkin store to learn about old trade routes and communities along the river. Swam at Flandrau State Park. Presented for the first annual Minnesota River Congress event in New Ulm. Camped at Riverside Park.
June 20: Toured the Minnesota River Valley History Museum to learn about wildlife on the Minnesota River. Learned about fish species and learned how to fish with the DNR's Minnaqua program. One of our girls caught a Bullhead Catfish! Arrived back in the cities.
This trip was provided free of cost for College Possible students thanks to individual donations. To Sponsor a Student, please visit wildriveracademy.com. Thanks!
