Harmondsworth Remembers
On July 2014 the community of Harmondsworth held an event to honour the 94 men from their parish that died during World War One. The video was commissioned to commemorate the event but also to record the parish for posterity should the area, it's community, and heritage be destroyed by a third runway at Heathrow Airport. If you wish to help take action against the third runway expansion please visit

[Wikipedia] Harmondsworth
Harmondsworth is a village in the London Borough of Hillingdon with a short border to the south onto London Heathrow Airport. The village has no railway stations; however, it adjoins the M4 motorway and is bisected by its predecessor, the Bath Road. Harmondsworth is an ancient parish which once included the large hamlets of Heathrow, Longford and Sipson. Longford and Sipson have modern signposts and facilities as separate villages, remaining to a degree interdependent such as for schooling. Its great barn and its church are well-repaired medieval buildings in the village. The largest proportion of land in commercial use is related to air transport and hospitality. The village includes public parkland with footpaths and butts onto the River Colne and further land in its regional park to the west, within Colnbrook.
The west of the village has two major airline headquarters (international and local) and two immigration detention centres, including one for a maximum of 620 men without either adequate proof of right of entry to, or to remain in, the United Kingdom. Many international visitors stay within the bounds of Harmondsworth each year, in hotels branded as Heathrow, as the hamlet of Heathrow and the farm of Perry Oaks in the parish were absorbed by the airport, and the name is applied to all hotels accessed from Bath Road in the borough.
The village made headlines on 25th October 2016 as it was announced by HM Government that Heathrow Airport would now get permission to apply for a third runway. According to current expansion plans, around half of the existing village will have to be demolished to make way for the north-west runway or rather the grassy space that surrounds the runway. The other half, including the parish church and Great Barn, will be only metres or yards from the perimeter of the airport.

The Ostrich Inn Colnbrook
The foundations of The Ostrich were laid in 1106, when Henry I was on the throne by Milo Crispen. It stands opposite the 17 mile stone from London. It was originally named 'The Hospice' but over the centuries it has been corrupted to it's current name; The Ostrich.
As with most historic buildings, The Ostrich has seen it's fair share of murders and they say that over 60 were committed here. Most famous of all were those committed in the 17th century by the landlord of the time, Jarman, who with his wife made a very profitable sideline by murdering their guests after they had retired for the night.
They had a trap door built into the floor of one of their bedrooms and when a suitably rich candidate arrived Jarman would inform his wife that a fat pig was available if she wanted one! She would reply by asking her husband to put him in the sty for till the morrow. The bedstead was hinged and they would tip the sleeping victim into a vat of boiling liquid immediately below, thus killing him.
Jarman and his wife's activities came to an end when their greed got the better of them and they plotted to kill a well known clothier Thomas Cole. After persuading him to make his will before he retired, Jarman killed Cole. Unfortunately Cole's horse was found wandering the streets nearby and caused a search for his owner who had been last seen entering The Ostrich! His body was found some time later in a nearby brook and some say that this Cole-in-the-brook is how Colnbrook got its name. It's a nice story but whether it is true or not, who's to say!
Other historical visitors to the Ostrich include Dick Turpin who used the Inn as a hideout, escaping the Bow Street Runners by jumping out of a window and King John who is rumoured to have stopped at the Inn on the way to Runnymede to sign the Magna Charta in 1215.

The Ostrich Hotel - Colnbrook - Heathrow - Review
My first go at a travel VLog !!
2nd time we have stayed at the Ostrich. It's a lovely old Coaching inn dating from the 12th century. Full of character and also haunted !!
Refurbished to a high standard just a few year ago. Great food and good ale.
We found the menu to be not as extensive as our previous visit and certainly more expensive..... but the food is very good. (the actual printed menu has very small text and is difficult to read)
Rooms are smallish but comfy. We paid £85 for one night which includes a full english breakfast.
Rooms are well double glazed meaning you can hear cars or aircraft !
There was slight problem with the time it took to prepare our evening meal... this is explained in the video

Watch: Harmondsworth residents resolve to fight until the very end
Villagers gathered at The Five Bells pub and watched as the news came in, many of whom now face an uphill battle to keep the homes they have lived in for decades.
Proposed plans include knocking down half of the village, including around 800 homes, to make way for expansion.
Long standing campaigner against the runway, chairman of HACAN John Stewart, said: Countless residents will be dismayed and distraught by this decision.
Some will lose their homes.
Some face the daunting prospect of living under a noisy flight path for the first time.
And many others will get yet more planes over their heads.
