Hike to Harney Peak at 7242 ft || Black Hills, SOUTH DAKOTA ||
I did this hike on Jan 13, 2018 in Black Hills of South Dakota - about 30 miles away from Rapid City. Harney Peak a.k.a Black Elk is the highest summit in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. This was a 8 miles hike that I completed in about 4 hrs.

Climbing the Harney Peak Ice Flow, South Dakota
Kirtis, Dalton and myself engage in an epic backcountry trek towards the dominating northwest face of Harney Peak, the tallest mountain east of the Rocky Range in the United States. At the base of this peak lies the rare, thin, 110ft tall Harney Ice Flow, that only the fearless, frozen basterds with ice in their veins seek to climb.
Day 3 -- Travis & Mike hiking Harney Peak in South Dakota
This was our second time climbing Harney Peak in South Dakota. We took the trail from Sylvan Lake to the top. We were told there was an easier trail that originated somewhere else but this was a lot of fun and a good accomplishment. Harney Peak is the highest mountain in the United States east of the Rockies (7,244 feet). July 20, 2010

Sylvan Lake Cabins - Mountain Oasis!
The cabins at Sylvan lake lodge in Black Hills National Forest South Dakota are great. They provide a comfortable living space with a great view. While they are not a 5 star hotel, they are very nice for cabins. The main lodge provides many of the things missing from the cabins including WiFi and food. While the cabins are nice the best thing about them is location. You are right next to many awesome hiking trails including Harney peak and Cathedral spires! The cabins at sylvan lake do come at a price of about $170 but if you are taking a longer trip the quiet and peace at sylvan lake is a welcome intermission!
History of the Sioux Falls Coliseum
Civic pride built the Sioux Falls Coliseum in 1917 and civic pride kept the building from being demolished and gave it a new life. Despite two fires, vote after vote, and the sifting political sands of a town that always wanted more, the Coliseum remained the center of Sioux Falls cultural, social, and often sports life, for 80 years before being reborn. Those who toured the country in the middle part of the century generally stopped at the Coliseum. Presidents, boxing champions, movie stars, world class musicians and so many others graced the building with their presence.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Keystone, South Dakota, United States, North America
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota, in the United States. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres (5.17 km2) and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. The tallest mountain in the region is Harney Peak (7,242 ft or 2,207 m). South Dakota historian Doane Robinson is credited with conceiving the idea of carving the likenesses of famous people into the Black Hills region of South Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region. Robinson's initial idea was to sculpt the Needles; however, Gutzon Borglum rejected the Needles site because of the poor quality of the granite and strong opposition from environmentalists and Native American groups. They settled on the Mount Rushmore location, which also has the advantage of facing southeast for maximum sun exposure. Robinson wanted it to feature western heroes like Lewis and Clark, Red Cloud and Buffalo Bill Cody but Borglum decided the sculpture should have a more national focus, and chose the four presidents whose likenesses would be carved into the mountain. After securing federal funding, construction on the memorial began in 1927, and the presidents' faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Upon Gutzon Borglum's death in March 1941, his son Lincoln Borglum took over construction. Although the initial concept called for each president to be depicted from head to waist, lack of funding forced construction to end in late October 1941. The U.S. National Park Service took control of the memorial in 1933, while it was still under construction, and has managed the memorial to the present day. It attracts nearly three million people annually. Tourism is South Dakota's second-largest industry, and Mount Rushmore is the state's top tourist attraction. The memorial hosts nearly three million visitors a year. In 2012, 2,185,447 people visited the park. The site attracts many visitors over the week of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The flora and fauna of Mount Rushmore are similar to those of the rest of the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Birds including the turkey vulture, bald eagle, hawk, and meadowlark fly around Mount Rushmore, occasionally making nesting spots in the ledges of the mountain. Smaller birds, including songbirds, nuthatches, and woodpeckers, inhabit the surrounding pine forests. Terrestrial mammals include the mouse, least chipmunk, red squirrel, skunk, porcupine, raccoon, beaver, badger, coyote, bighorn sheep, bobcat, elk, mule deer, yellow-bellied marmot, and American bison. The striped chorus frog, western chorus frog, and northern leopard frog also inhabit the area. In addition, several species of snakes inhabit the region. Grizzly Bear Brook and Starling Basin Brook, the two streams in the memorial, support fish such as the longnose dace and the brook trout. Mountain goats are not indigenous to the area but can also be found here. They are descended from goats which were a gift from Canada to Custer State Park in 1924 but later escaped. At lower elevations, coniferous trees, mainly the Ponderosa pine, surround most of the monument, providing shade from the sun. Other trees include the bur oak, the Black Hills spruce, and the cottonwood. Nine species of shrubs grow near Mount Rushmore. There is also a wide variety of wildflowers, including especially the snapdragon, sunflower, and violet. Towards higher elevations, plant life becomes sparser. However, only approximately five percent of the plant species found in the Black Hills are indigenous to the region. The area receives about 18 inches (460 mm) of precipitation on average per year, enough to support abundant animal and plant life. Trees and other plants help to control surface runoff. Dikes, seeps, and springs help to dam up water that is flowing downhill, providing watering spots for animals. In addition, stones like sandstone and limestone help to hold groundwater, creating aquifers. Through the study of tree rings, it has been determined that forest fires have occurred in the Ponderosa forests surrounding Mount Rushmore around every 27 years based on evidence of fire scars found within tree core samples. Large conflagrations are not common. Most events have been ground fires that serve to clear forest debris. The area is a climax community. Recent pine beetle infestations have threatened the forest. Mount Rushmore is inside a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone of 5a, meaning certain plant life in the area can withstand a low temperature of no more than −20 °F (−29 °C). The two wettest months of the year are May and June.

Caves, Carvings and Cowboys - Black Hills, South Dakota
In July 2010 my family and I took a road trip to South Dakota. We stopped in Watertown, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. We saw Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Pactola Lake, Wind Cave, Spearfish Canyon-Bridal Falls and Roughlock Falls, Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, Deadwood, and Sturgis. We ended our trip with a Chuckwagon Dinner and Show at Fort Hays. There were flowers, lots of hills, rocks, animals. It was a beautiful road trip for the family. I loved the part in the cave when they turned out all the lights, and the Wildlife Loop was really fun. Especially when the buffalo were holding up traffic, and the burrows were eating from our hands. The weather was great, too. Would recommend this family trip. Great for all ages.
