UK's Johnson at Yangon’s Shwedagon pagoda
(21 Jan 2017) British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson ended his two-day visit to Myanmar on Saturday with a visit to the Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon, the holiest Buddhist temple in the country.
It has become the traditional final stop for visiting ministers.
Johnson walked barefoot round the huge temple complex, pausing to pour water on statues, and to ring a large bell.
In the course of his visit to the country, Johnson met with Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
In a tweet he said he held very positive talks with her on UK support for economic reforms, trade and human rights.
He said he also raised the issue of the situation in Rakhine State, where 65,000 Muslims have fled across the border to Bangladesh to escape an anti-insurgent security sweep by the military that has drawn strong criticism from the UN and from fellow ASEAN member, Malaysia.
The Shwedagon Pagoda was built 2,500 years ago. The main stupa stands 110 metres (361 feet) high.

#YOHRS: Buddhist Buildings in England: assessing significance for transcultural heritage
There are about 190 Buddhist buildings in England, representing a diverse range of traditions. A research project commissioned by Historic England and carried out by the University of Leeds is helping establish an understanding of the character and significance of this heritage. These structures act as guardians of existing heritage and the history it encapsulates. They also provide inspirational new places that have made a real contribution to British cultural life. Using this research this paper will look at the question ‘what is Buddhist heritage? And consider how the identification of this heritage relates to the authorised heritage discourse in England.
Dr Linda Monckton FSA is an architectural historian who joined English Heritage, now Historic England, in 2003, first as a Senior Investigator and then later as Head of Research Policy for Places of Worship. She is currently an Analyst in the Research Group. She has published widely on religious buildings from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Wat Phra Dhammakaya London - Buddhist Temple in Surrey, UK - renovated chapel
With kind permission, I visited this beautiful chapel building which has been converted to provide a Buddhist Temple in the heart of Surrey. Now an established temple, I first found this building when attending meditation classes. The sympathetic renovation and improvements have very much kept with the buildings architectural history. Thank you to Kruawan and everyone at the temple for the usual warm welcome.
