Harold Washington Library Center: A Monument to Chicago
In 1987, the City of Chicago put out a call for entries to design the new central library for the Chicago Public Library System. The winning design by Hammond, Beeby and Babka references the architecture of several notable buildings in Chicago’s downtown. For more information, visit architecture.org/buildings

The Harold Washington Library Center is the central library for the Chicago Public Library System. It is located just south of the Loop 'L', at 400 S. State Street in Chicago, in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is a full-service library and ADA compliant. As with all libraries in the Chicago Public Library system, it has free wifi internet service. The building contains approximately 756,000 square feet (70,200 m2) of space. The total square footage is approximately 972,000 square feet (90,300 m2) including the rooftop garden penthouse, according to the Zoning department of the city of Chicago.
With the conversion of Chicago's former central library into the Chicago Cultural Center in 1977, a long-term temporary central library was opened in the Mandel Building at 425 North Michigan Avenue and much of the library's collection was put into storage. A debate on a new central library ensued and continued throughout most of the 1980s, frustrated by a lack of funding. Upon his election in 1983, Mayor Harold Washington supported the construction of a new central library. After the turmoil of four mayoral administrations in a seven-year period, finally, in 1986 during Washington's tenure, the city and the Library Board picked a location and floated a $175 million bond issue to provide funds for the new building, as well as the entire citywide library branch system.
All public doors lead to the lobby. The north public entrance on Van Buren is just east of the CTA's Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren station, served by the Brown, Orange, Pink and Purple Lines. The corridor goes east, then south, then west, and opens south to the lobby.
The east and south public entrances open directly to the lobby. The west public entrance opens to the offices. The west corridor goes east then south to open at the lobby.
The lower level houses the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium, Multi-Purpose Room and Exhibit Hall.
The central lobby is two stories tall and includes both the circulation and information desks. On the east side, the Popular Library is housed and on the West side there is a YouMedia space for teens.
The second floor houses the Thomas Hughes Children’s library.
The third floor includes computers for public use, periodicals, interlibrary loan and general information services departments along with a library makerspace. The Maker Lab includes multiple 3d printers, CNC machines and Laser Cutters. Use of these machines is available for a nominal fee.
The fourth floor holds the business, general sciences, and technology items.
The fifth floor holds government publications, Chicago municipal references, maps, and center for the blind, visually impaired and physically disabled.
The sixth floor holds social sciences and history resources.
The seventh floor holds literature and language resources as well as a work by acclaimed Polish sculptor Jerzy Kenar.

Mayor Harold Washington - Chicago's 41st Mayor
Mayor Harold Washington - Chicago's 41st Mayor
Harold Washington, (born April 15, 1922, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.—died November 25, 1987, Chicago), American politician who gained national prominence as the first African American mayor of Chicago (1983–87). During World War II, Washington joined the army and served as an engineer in the South Pacific. After returning home in 1946, he graduated from Roosevelt University (B.A., 1949), earned a law degree from Northwestern University (1952), and established a private law practice in Chicago. He succeeded his father, a part-time Methodist minister, as Democratic precinct captain before working as a city attorney (1954–58) and a state labour arbitrator (1960–64). He then served in the Illinois House of Representatives (1965–76), the Illinois State Senate (1976–80), and the U.S. House of Representatives (1980–83). During his second term in Congress, Washington was persuaded by black leaders to enter the 1983 mayoral race in Chicago. Overcoming negative publicity—in 1970 his law license was suspended for failure to perform paid legal work and in 1972 he spent more than a month in jail for failing to file his federal income tax return for four years—and campaigning for reform and an end to city patronage, he won the Democratic nomination by upsetting incumbent Mayor Jane Byrne and Richard M. Daley, the son of four-term mayor Richard J. Daley. In the general election Washington narrowly defeated Bernard Epton, a virtually unknown white Republican, in a record voter turnout tinged with racial overtones.
Chicago retains its dubious title as one of the nation’s most segregated cities, according to two studies released Wednesday by the Chicago Urban League and by researchers at American University in Washington, D.C.
A century after the start of the Great Migration and 50 years after the Kerner Commission Report declared “our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white — separate and unequal,” a quarter of Chicago’s 77 communities remain as racially and socioeconomically segregated as ever and undeniably unequal, according to the Chicago Urban League.
