Living in Virginia: Slow Train
This special explores the relationship between the railroad and residents of the Shenandoah Valley in the twentieth century, with a few flashbacks to the nineteenth century. Residents and railroad employees describe their deep connection with and daily dependence upon the railroad as it connected mountain communities to the Shenandoah Valley. For the rural resident, the railroad became a friend that brought communication, commerce and transportation. Personal experiences, archival documents, film and video, slides, photographs, posters, and artifacts chronicle the history of railroad development in Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Charlottesville, Lexington, Clifton Forge, Elkton, Luray and Swoope.
Field Day of the Past 2014
What a great time at the Field Day of the Past out in Goochland County, Virginia. Here is some footage from the day and I wish we could have stayed longer but someone got pooped out!
In the summer of 1992, a few steam and gas engine enthusiasts gathered for an informal discussion on the possibility of hosting a steam and gas engine show in Goochland County, Virginia. They organized under the Rockville-Centerville Steam and Gas Historical Association and hosted their first show in October of that year.
About 5,000 people attended. The revenue from this show was to support local organizations. A few years later, they moved the show from the chilly month of October to September, then expanded it to two days, then three. With the help of dedicated volunteers Field Day became a family event with a down home feel of a old time country fair as well as museum quality exhibits, preserving historical buildings and the pursuing the desire to remember local history.
The show is now takes place the third full weekend in September and draws approximately 40.000 people annually. Field Day has also contributed to many local charities, organizations, and non-profits, including the Massey Cancer Center, Boy Scouts of America, American Heart Association, several hospices, the Goochland Christmas Mother,area rescue squads and fire departments, Habitat for Humanity, area churches, Goochland Fellowship and Family Services and many others.
What Does Field Day have to offer?
Um..... what does it not? Historical displays and demonstrations, re-enactments, tractor and truck pulls, small engine displays, arts and crafts, flea market, antique and modern construction equipment demonstrations, a log cabin with a heritage craft area, and historic buildings. Volunteers demonstrate the daily routines of the life of a family surviving in rural Virginia which include wheat and peanut threshing, meat smoking, sorghum molasses making, washing clothes, canning, saw milling, and more.
Permanent exhibits include a working United States Post Office, a 1930s grocery store and a 1930s garage, fire lookout tower, blacksmith shop, woodwright shop,canning kitchen, ice house, gold mining equipment, corn crib, Log Cabin, Pullman railroad car, caboose, and engine buildings and our Educational Buildings filled with rotating and permanent displays and exhibits..
Come out to Goochland and see what we have to offer!

:: snow storm 2009 ::
I was desperate to get out of town and trying to make my way back home for the holiday. However, a pleasant surprise, a snow storm was moving from North Carolina toward the north east. I had been living in up state New York for four months and it had been snowing for the last week or so, but this blizzard hit hard as I was entering Virginia on the I-81 corridor traveling south bound. I was forced to be grounded at a town in the middle of no where called Mount Jackson. There was nothing but a Food Lion, a Super 8 (which was where I stayed) with a Denny's, a truck stop and some gas stations.
The snow did not stop as I was anticipate the following day, in fact it built up to a stronger system. There was nothing I could do and my resources were limited; luckily, I had my handheld point-and-shoot HD video cam (with no optical zoom) and my macBook Pro. Thus I decided to shoot a film around sunset. Nothing spectacular, but something to reminisces the recording breaking snow storm of 2009 and a really bizarre mini vacation in this little town.
