World pie eating championships take place in Wigan
The 2014 World Pie Eating Championships have taken place in Wigan, United Kingdom.
Harry's Bar hosted the 22nd edition of the tournament, which saw people travel from across the region to see who can eat a local meat pie the quickest.
The World Pie Eating competition is a competition we've held here at Harry's Bar for 22 years now, tournament organiser and Pie Master Tony Callaghan said.
[We're] Very proud of it cause we're pie eaters in Wigan. It's just about who can eat a pie as quickly as possible. Dead simple, he added.
Local fitness instructor 37 year-old Barry Rigby beat Matt Backhouse in the final in a time of 46.2 seconds to claim his second title, having also won the event in 2009.
The competition stems from Wiganers being called 'humble pie eaters' ever since they broke a union strike with miners at the turn of the 20th century.
World Pie Eating Championships
A pub in Wigan, Northern England saw contestants biting off more than they could chew at the annual World Pie Eating Championships.
Harry’s Bar hosted the tournament, which sees people travel from across the region to see who can scoff a local meat pie in the quickest time possible.
Competition in the past has been so fierce that gravy has been banned from the pies as it has helped punters to swallow the pie much quicker. There have also even been cases of contestants attempting to gain an unfair advantage by using cough syrup to make it easier to get the pie down – this approach is now strictly banned too.
However this isn’t an event for those who want to have their pie and eat it, with the difference between taking the title and losing it, a matter of milliseconds as contestants attempt to finish off a pie that’s 12cm in diameter and 3.5cms in depth as quickly as possible.
The competition stems from Wiganers being called “pie eaters” ever since they broke a union strike with miners at the turn of the 20th century.
17 competitors were hungry enough for enter the contest and it was local lad Martin Appleton-Clare who won the title for the second time. He last won it back in 2012.
The 37-year-old Wigner gobbled down the steak and kidney pie in just 38.2 seconds. It was way off the current World record that was set in 2010 by Neil Collier who managed to eat a pie in a staggering 23.91 seconds.
World Pie Eating Championship
It has been a spectacular 12 months of sport for the English town of Wigan - their football team won the FA Cup and the town's rugby league side won the Challenge Cup in June. To round off the year, the Lancashire town gained yet more silverware in the annual World Pie Eating Championships held on Wednesday (December 18).
However, this is not an event for those who want to savour their pie, with the difference between taking the title and losing it being a matter of milliseconds as contestants attempt to finish off a pie that is 12cm in diameter and 3.5cms in depth as quickly as possible.
Held at Harry's Bar in Wigan in the north-west of England, competition is so fierce gravy has been banned from use as it allows competitors to swallow the pie quicker.
There have even been cases of contestants attempting to gain an unfair advantage by using cough syrup to make it easier to get the pie down - an approach that is now strictly banned.
Yet as Pie Master and organiser Tony Callaghan explains, it is a fun event that taps into the history of the city.
It's open to anybody, but I mean we'd like to keep the trophy in Wigan because, of course, we won two, we won the rugby cup this year and we've won the FA Cup. So I think it's only right that we win, a 'Wiganer' wins it. We do let foreigners from Bolton, St Helens, and places like that come along, You know if they come from Yorkshire, as long as they've got a passport, I don't mind them entering. But those other people don't learn to eat pies; it's really a Wigan competition to be truthful.
A brief, but intense event that kicked off a pie-noon, this year's competition saw 38 year-old local security officer Ian Coulton finish his pie in the slowest ever winning time of 1 minute and 6 seconds.
I opened my gullet, there might have been a little bit that dropped on the floor but I didn't plan that. I just pushed it in as fast as I could and chewed it as fast as I could. It wasn't easy, he said.
That is a long way off from the world record of 23.53 seconds, which was set by last year's winner Martin Clare.
And after the packed pub had watched the competition, there was enough time for the rest of the spectators to enjoy their own traditional Wigan lunch - a hot pie.
