Hartley Vale is very historic area. Not only is it the place where the first road to cross the Blue Mountains descended into the valley below, but it became the site of the first major industrial development beyond the mountains - the Hartley Vale shale oil mines and refinery.

Historic Hartley Village - New South Wales
Hartley was formerly a judicial and administrative centre that had a busy courthouse.
The courthouse was built in 1837 and was designed by prominent New South Wales Colonial Architect Mortimer Lewis. The courthouse, which operated for over fifty years, dealt with a constant stream of robbers, thieves and convicts.
Although Hartley fell into disuse, it survived as a perfectly preserved village that is a superb example of 19th century architecture.
Because of its heritage value, it is now preserved as a historic site, administered by the National Parks and Wildlife Service of New South Wales.

Description
17 Old Great Western Highway, HARTLEY, NSW
As you drive into the Hartley Historic Village, you are immediately transported back in time to a bygone era of hard working convicts, and the great Australian Gold Rush.
Built in the early 1800's from handmade bricks and locally cut stone, Hartley Colonial Homestead is a prime example of the colonial period and features, open hearth fireplaces & timber windows and doors, which are complemented by the large open living room which was an addition to the home. The 3 bedrooms well appointed bedrooms are generous for rooms of that period, and the bathroom has been updated and features underfloor heating.
Set on approximately 26.63 HA of usable land, the property is fully fenced and has 2 main dams, plus a water lease to pump water from the river, perfect for horses or a few head of stock. In addition the property had numerous sheds and a large triple garage with workshop and power, and the property is zoned to enable the construction of a second dwelling, as the land has a separate road access from Carroll drive.
