Occupy movement reaches downtown Springfield, Ohio - #OSOH #FEB3 (closed captions available)
Some people would have lost hope in what poll's call the nation's laziest, unhappiest and wheeziest city in America, but not for the group of protesters that were seen outside of the Springfield, Ohio city hall on Friday.
Multiple people got together February 3 to protest the unfair wealth distribution in our country, as well as other issues like the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), several of the peaceful protesters coming from neighboring cities.
We have had a tremendous assault on our civil liberties, said Mary, 86, whenever you get people afraid of everything we begin to lose our civil liberties. There is some fear, there is some real fear, but mostly its manufactured fear.
When asked about why she chose public demonstration, she voiced her concern for democracy saying, This is one of the ways I can participate, as small as it is, making a sign facing the public, to try to get people a little more aware of what's happening in this country.
Mary also writes letters to the congressmen and supports effective organizations. I think that we have the best democracy money can buy, she said but you cannot have a democracy when a few people own all of the wealth, and so this is just one thing that I do.
February 3rd also marked a planned Day of Action where people gathered outside of their local congressional offices to protest the signing of the NDAA.
However, that wasn't Occupy Springfield Ohio's reason for gathering outside city hall on Friday. Many of the protesters had decided as a group to meet every Friday from 12pm to 1pm. Mary stated, It's better when it's several of us, then it isn't an individual effort, because I've done things as an individual level; it's easy to be called a 'crackpot' or a 'weirdo'.
Many people expected cold or freezing weather to stop occupiers from protesting publically, however that weather just hasn't hit Springfield, Ohio as badly as they were expecting.
The people who are working at the ski resorts are losing their jobs and I feel guilty because we have been very blessed, for those of us who do believe in public demonstrations. We've been blessed this winter.
Several protesters have reported that they've been getting civil and respectful responses from many people, including those unaware of the nation's current problems and those who disagree with the Occupy movement.
Occupy Springfield Ohio meets Fridays 12pm to 1pm outside of the city hall downtown.
