Secrets of Hartshorne Woods Park
Researcher Cory Newman takes us on a tour of Hartshorne Woods Park (between Highlands and Navesink, NJ) to find structures and relics from the old Navesink Military Reservation that are half-buried in the woods. It was called the Navesink Military Reservation from 1942 to 1950, then the Highlands Air Force Station from 1950 to 1966 and finally it was called the Highlands Army Air Defense Site from 1966 to 1974.

ECS @ Hartshorne.. Atlantic Highlands NJ
A lazy ride through the Hartshorne forest on a cold Saturday morning on the last day of March 2018...We can't just can't catch a break from this brutal winter...Hartshorne is a pretty cool place to ride out by the beach and along the Navisink river but just beware of all the hikers and walkers! there are a ton!! Not my favorite place to ride but its a good spot to get some elevation in..We did 18 miles and 2,220' of elevation on this ride and also connected Huber woods as well and its pretty local to us...Summer time you will not see me here its usually washed out, sandy, and too many walkers.
Hartshorne Ride July 2019
Riding at Hartshorne Woods, my first time there. The trail loops around the mountain with some beautiful scenic overlooks of the Navesink River. Lots of tough, gnarly climbs, and the descents were pretty technical so it was challenging, but fun. Plus I met a couple of other mountain bikers there and I followed them for a while. Definitely going back there.

Hartshorne Woods - Atlantic Highlands NJ
Trails are kept in good shape even after a good couple of days with some good amount of rain. Also the land there dries fast and the mud there is very non prevalent. This is one of the two good trail systems to go to after a rainy day in North Jersey and Allaire State Park is another one. In this video I sent it at Grand Tour - Hartshorne Woods as fast as was safe in such conditions.

Inside Never Before Seen WWII Bunker Hartshorne Woods NJ
For the first time ever, Never before seen WWII bunkers in Hartshorne Woods County Park, Monmouth County, NJ. This was a restricted area until the county finally rehabilitated it. Just recently opened to the public. There were many more buildings and bunkers that the county destroyed years ago. This was once a US Air Force Command and Control facility.

Mountain Biking Hartshorne Trails in New Jersey
I’ll be honest with you- when we headed out to these trails at the Jersey Shore, we weren’t expecting much. Sure the reviews on Singletracks were great, but the last few times we were in the Atlantic Highlands, we were racing the NJBA time trial at Sandy Hook, and it was flat, always windy as hell and sand everywhere we looked. So we figured we were just in for another Eastern New Jersey experience. If you’re using 195 to reach these trails, you’ll drive right past Clayton and Allaire, so once again, we expected more of the same. We were pleasantly surprised.
These trails are freaking great. There are a few loops and they are pretty well marked. Stay off of the greens as they are for hikers. The blues are doubletrack and kindof just a way to get to the blacks. On the blue trail from the rocky point parking lot, there is a little jump skills area that’s a good warm up before you get to the blacks. Once you get there you’ll find some of the best flow in New Jersey. Extended downs and short rooty ups make for some awesome riding.
The scenery is great too. The trails wind down along the Navasink River overlook. We couldn’t use the drone out there on the trails, but we were able to send Dobby up to get this awesome 360 view from way above the trees. You can see the river and then Sandy Hook and the Ocean is off in the distance.
Part of the history of this park was that it was a military bunker used during the cold war for missile defense. All of the technology has been removed since then though. They say these trails drain well after it rains, and there are a few sandy areas, but they were infrequent.
We give this place a huge unexpected thumbs up. Literally the only complaint we had is that there are a lot of hikers and people walking their dogs out there- even on Rocky point, which is a black diamond. We didn’t see any horses, but there were places where hoof prints were evident.
So- if you’re headed down the Jersey Shore to check out Allaire and you don’t mind a little climbing for your coasters - you might want to drive 20 minutes farther and ride these trails at Hartshorne instead.
As always- thanks for watching. Catch you next time!
Mountain Biking Hartshorne Woods Park | Middletown, NJ
Hartshorne Woods Park is a fast and flowy gem with some awesome scenery along the Navesink river. I visited this system while on a work trip and it was worth every minute. While there aren't any crazy man made features or anything that i'd call expert level, there is plenty of climbing and a bunch of technical chunky descents. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area! #HartshorneWoodsPark #mtbNJ
