Lake Hartwell Dam, Hartwell, Georgia
On Jan. 15th 2010, the 12 dam gates were opened for the first time in three years for testing. The lake and dam are on the Savannah River, which is the border between Georgia and South Carolina. I love the rainbow that developed in the spray as the water spilled down the Savannah.

An edit from this past weekend taking a pontoon boat ride with johnny (the most interesting man in the world) around the lake on the georgia/north carolina border. I apologize for the off axis shots the gimbal needed recalibrating and i couldn't do it on the boat. The song is rich by cosmo sheldrake (i do not own this music and implore you to support the artist if you like what you hear) filmed with dji phantom 4

Big rig speeding on Athens Street. This is a residential zoned area with a 25 mph post speed limit.
Hartwell Dam opened during flood stage, July 9, 2013
Following 3 years of drought, this is a very rare occurrence. Although the gates were scheduled to be opened for testing, they are rarely left open continually; but the lake has been adding 2 inches per day, and the State Park's lower camp sites around the lake are flooding. The night before this event, strong storms came through the area and caused flood warnings all the way up to Transylvania County, NC. There have been record rain levels in Georgia this year.
The Center of the World - Hartwell GA

This episode is a little more somber than previous ones; however, it is a great story, nonetheless. It takes us to a place that was once considered the Center of the World by the Cherokee Tribe who once called this area in the Piedmont region of Georgia home. This was the central hub where trails, trading posts and camps once radiated out and where flocks of Passenger Pigeons once roosted. The land changed drastically after gold was discovered in Georgia in 1829, and the Cherokee were forced from the land. Overhunting eventually led to the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon as modem civilization took hold. Today, this sign and a stone monument are what are left of the Cherokee’s Center of the World.
EPISODE TRANSCRIPT
Today, I am in a very special place. Welcome to the Center of the World!
Standing here along Highway 29 in North Georgia, it’s hard to believe that at one time, this was a bustling area and was called the Center of the World by Native Americans.
This occurred hundreds of years ago and in this area there were numerous trails, trading posts and camps. There was plenty of game to hunt. Buffalo even roamed here during that point in history.
And it was the Cherokee Tribe that inhabited this land. They called this location Ah-Yeh-Li A-Lo-Hee.”
This area was also known for the massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons who would darken the sky with their numbers and nest in the many deciduous forests here, many times breaking the limbs with their sheer numbers.
With the discovery of gold in Georgia in 1829 things began to change dramatically. President Andrew Jackson, a man who had no love for the Native American people, had thousands of men, women and children removed at bayonet point to Oklahoma. Known as the trail of tears, the Cherokee people were forced to march for 1,000 miles, with many dying along the way.
After the Cherokees were gone, the new settlers began changing the land. Farmland replaced forests and overhunting of the Passenger Pigeon eventually resulted in extinction. The last bird, Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.
Sadly, the Center of the World is no more. Best we remember so as not to repeat history.

Speeding EMC Truck on Athens St. Hartwell, GA Feb 2015
Speeding EMC truck on a 25 mph street. Welcome to Athens Street Hartwell GA...Feb 6, 2015 2:58 pm Where's the emergency? 50+ mph in a 25 mph residential zone must be ok with the community leaders as so little action is taken to stop the dangerous speeders. Since the local leaders have chosen to look the other way and not address the problem, requests were sent to Governor's office for support from the Department of Public Safety and the GA State Patrol to patrol within the city limits of Hartwell. GSP were here for two days. Department of Public Safety patrolled for at least a week or two.

Police Stop Speeder on Athens Street Speedway Hartwell Georgia
Athens Street Speedway where it only takes a few seconds for a speeder to fly by!!! Why do they continue speeding in the presence of the City PD? No consequences! Warnings and no point tickets could be the reasons why the speeders continue.....Maybe City Council told the PD to pass out lollypops to the speeders?
