Hasami Festival, Hasami, Japan 波佐見町:長崎県
I was able to attend the Hasami Festival! It is held every year on August 28th. This festival was so much fun. I was able to see a traditional dance from Hasami, eat delicious food, see amazing performances, and a firework display at the end!
Hasami has history dating back 400 years with the introduction of Hasami pottery. There is lots to see and do in this small pottery town!

Hasami Porcelain Festival 2018
It is golden week and the busiest season for Hasami! All of the kilns in Hasami come to ceramics park to sell their porcelain during this time. People from all over come to Hasami to get big discounts on their favorite pottery brands.
Many people come here every year so that they can replace their older dishes, or buy the newest releases of the season directly from the maker.
There are also many games and prizes played during this event.
We took a free shuttle bus to get here from one of the many parking areas located throughout town. The traffic gets rough, as Hasami is a small town, so parking at one of the designated parking areas, and taking a shuttle bus is recommended.

Japan Travel: Pottery Lovers Unite!! Folk and History Museum, Arita, Saga06 Moopon
Located in western Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Arita is a small town known for its local pottery, Arita-yaki. Over 400 years ago, Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought several skilled Korean craftsmen to Japan. One of these men found kaolin, the main ingredient needed to create porcelain in Arita’s Izumiyama Quarry. This lead to Arita town being the first producers of porcelain in Japan, and Akita-yaki was born.
The Folk and History Museum in Arita town is a small museum which examines the local history through exhibitions of porcelain production. There are also explanations about how porcelain has affected daily life, including documents relating to the porcelain business and local currencies.
The museum is located just beside the Izumiyama Quarry. Visitors will find a grand stone sign at the entrance of the museum. Outside the museum, there is a mortar for hulling. There is a restaurant in the museum as well.

MONOHARA - Kurawanka Collection -
Artisans in the Nagasaki prefecture town of Hasami have been manufacturing ceramics for over four centuries, and their revolutionary climbing kilns once produced the highest volume of daily-use cups, bowls and plates in Japan. In late 2012, Hasami's Kyohei Baba asked us to create a new brand by designing a tableware collection. Kyohei recognized our acute appreciation for Japanese culture and our unique typographic perspective after the aesthetic and commercial success of our Hasami Morning Collection.
We found much of our inspiration quite literally in Hasami's backyard—the trench filled with 400 years worth of cast offs and blemished items. Artifacts from Hasami's ceramic trash pit are the best link to the past and one of the keys to Hasami's future, so Kyohei named his new brand Monohara, which translates colloquially to The trash pit next to the climbing kiln.
Our efforts centered around preserving and celebrating Hasami's collective culture while helping to establish a perpetually viable business and promoting it on an international level. We created custom artwork for each of the 15 pieces and did our best to backfill Hasami's fabled trash pits by working through countless prototypes before achieving the best balance, scale and continuity in each item. The Monahara wordmark references the brushwork of Edo Era Hasami village artisans, whose latin letterforms evoked Hiragana sensibilities on Japanese products that were exported to Europe in the 19th Century.
The nesting ceramic collection includes five plate options, six bowl sizes, teacups, teapots, a compra bottle and a tenugui cloth. Three different hand-crafted Japanese Paulownia wood boxes are also available: One for the entire collection, one for a set of plates and one for a complete tea service.
MONOHARA by HOUSE INDUSTRIES EXHIBIT
October 15 to October 20, 2013, open from 12:00 to 7:00
Meet House's Andy Cruz on October 19
Midori.so, 2F, 3F 3-3-11 Aobadai, Meguro, Tokyo, Japan
The Monohara collection will be available in the United States in December 2013.
Arita Porcelin Park Part II
The Arita Porcelain Park is a small theme park located in Arita town, Saga Prefecture, Japan. The Porcelain Park is a recreation of a traditional German village, and is located just on the outskirts of Arita on the road to Hasami. Most stunning is the reproduction of the “Zwinger,” a famous palace in the German city of Dresden. Inside the palace are impressive permanent exhibition of both European porcelain in one wing and Arita-yaki in the other. Behind the palace lies a European style garden. There is also a large ancient kiln which can be visited. The theme park also houses various stores selling both traditional Japanese and European-style products.
Making Pizza With Nicole: Hasami, Japan Season 2 Episode 4
A Continuing Journey's Nicole films her own piece in Hasami, Japan at the Pizza on the Hill.
This old building was an awesome discovery! I read that this building had pottery kilns and was converted to a brick oven pizza joint. It reminded me much of the mountain lodges and shops you’d find on the ski mountains. It is an old wooden building with a fire pit built right in the center, surrounded by little stools around it so you can either enjoy the warmth or eat and drink tea. The set up makes for a very cozy experience.
Here at this restaurant, visitors come to eat of course, but there is something else that makes this place stand out from others. You are able to make your own pizza from stratch and paint a piece of pottery!
