Hase-Dera - Kamakura - 長谷寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Hase-dera or Hasedera is a temple of the Jodo sect located in Kamakura and famous for its 9.18m tall eleven headed Kannon statue, the goddess of mercy. According to the legend, this Kannon statue was in fact carved from the same tree as the also famous but taller, Kannon statue located in the Nara Hasedera Temple.
While it is not always possible to take photos or videos of this magnificent statue, visitors enjoy its splendor all year long.
It is also worth noting that the Hase-Dera Temple in Kamakura is extremely popular in autumn for its many magnificent maple trees.

Japan Kamakura Travel Vlog
If you want a one day trip from Tokyo, Kamakura would be a good option. It takes only about an hour to reach there. Kamakura is also a more laid back countryside area, it's different than the big city like Tokyo. We visited several places there :
- Kamakura Kokomae : a place where the anime Slam Dunk took inspiration from
- Shichirigahama : We went to bill's cafe to try out their fluffy ricotta hotcakes
- Gokurakuji Station : got featured in a J drama called Umimachi Diary
- Hasedera temple : a Buddhist temple
- Kamakura Komachi Street : A place where you can find a bunch of Japanese local street food

Kamakura Hasedera (長谷寺) Temple, Kamakura District, Japan
坂東観音巡礼 第4番 鎌倉 長谷寺 長谷観音
Kamakura Hasedera (鎌倉 長谷寺) Temple is located about fifteen minute bus ride from the JR Kamakura Station in Kamakura district of Kanagawa prefecture in Japan.
This temple was built in 736, with many halls to worship Buddha. There is the main hall called Kannon-do hall, which enshrines standing eleven headed Buddha, about 31 feet. Next to the Kannon-do is the Amida-do, where a golden seated Buddha statue of Amida Buddha is located.
On the way to the Main Hall from the main gate, there is a Jizo Hall, with hundreds of small Jizo Bosatsu statues around the Hall, This is a surreal sight to see so many Jizo statues.
Next the rock garden and pond near the main entrance, to the left there are a set of caves located called Benten-kutsu cave. This cave contains many Buddha and Kannon statues carved into the rock directly. There is also a beautiful eight armed Benzaiten goddess, carved by the Monk Kobo Daishi himself.
There is also a observation platform in the main hall premises, which overlooks the Sugami Bay (Kamakura Bay) with beautiful views in all seasons.
Hasedera temple is fourth temple in the Bando (33 Kannon temples of Kanto region) pilgrimage circuit.
Enjoy!!!

The main statue of Kannon is one of the largest wooden statues in Japan, with a height of 9.18 metres (30.1 ft), and is made from camphor wood and gilded in gold. It has 11 heads, each of which represents a different phase in the search for enlightenment. Photography is not allowed inside the temple.
Exploring Hasedera Temple in Kamakura
Kamakura is one of my favorite cities to visit. It's about an hour by train outside of Tokyo and has some really great sites to visit. It's great for a day trip from Tokyo. In this video I explore the beautiful Hasedera Temple located on a mountain and about 10 minutes from the Great Buddha, another popular attraction. The temple grounds feature an overlook of the bay, a 30 ft Kannon statue, and a candle-lit cave. You definitely have to check this temple out when you're in Kamakura.
Be sure to check out my other videos from Kamakura. You have to visit the Great Buddha statue while you're here:

Things to do in Kamakura?
In this video you will see The Great Buddha in Kamakura Japan, The Hachimangu Shrine and the Hasedera Temple
The Great Buddha of Kamakura (鎌倉大仏, Kamakura Daibutsu) is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 11.4 meters, it has long been the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara's Todaiji Temple and some recent creations.
The statue was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. So, since the late 15th century, the Buddha has been standing in the open air.
The Great Buddha is located a 5-10 minute walk from Hase Station.

The Hachimangu Shrine
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮, Tsurugaoka Hachimangū) is Kamakura's most important shrine. It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, and enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government.
The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and of the samurai in general. The deified spirits of the ancient Emperor Ojin who has been identified with Hachiman, Hime-gami and Empress Jingu are enshrined at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine can be reached from Kamakura Station either through the busy Komachi-dori shopping street, or along the Dankazura, a pedestrian path in the center of Wakamiya Oji Street that is lined with several hundred cherry trees. Via either route, the walk from Kamakura Station to the shrine takes about 10-15 minutes.
Hasedera Temple
Hasedera (長谷寺) is a temple of the Jodo sect, famous for its eleven-headed statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The 9.18 meter tall, gilded wooden statue is regarded as one of the largest wooden sculpture in Japan and can be viewed in the temple's main building, the Kannon-do Hall. According to legend, it was carved from the same tree as the similarly tall Kannon statue worshiped at the Hasedera Temple in Nara Prefecture.
Adjacent to the main hall is the Kannon Museum, a small museum that requires an additional entrance fee. It exhibits some more of the temple's treasures, including Buddhist statues, a temple bell and a picture scroll. Explanatory signs are in Japanese, and an English pamphlet with basic explanations is available. On the opposite side of the main hall stands the Amida-do Hall with an almost three meter tall, golden statue of Amida Buddha.
Hasedera is located a five minute walk from Hase Station, the third station from Kamakura along the Enoden railway line. The Enoden is a streetcar-like train that connects Kamakura with Enoshima and Fujisawa. Its terminal station in Kamakura is located just next to JR Kamakura Station.
Admission Fee: 400yen

Hobonichi With Me | Kamakura for Ajisai / Hydrangeas (Hasedera Temple & Meigetsu-in) ????
Hello all! Here’s my Kamakura report when Yumi-san and I visited this beautiful place! We went to Hasedera Temple & Meigetsu-in. If you want to experience the nature of Japan while traveling around Tokyo, I would recommend visiting Kamakura (all seasons). If you’re here during summer / late June (not sure if there are still hydrangeas right now), you should check out their ajisai spots! We went on a Friday and there were a lot of tourists so it’s best to go the earlier you can. ^^
More photos / updates on the blog soon! ????
Just being curious.. how about in your country? Do you also have ajisai season like we have here in Japan? If not, what are the famous seasonal flowers? :D
