Hasedera temple, Sakurai Nara Japan
According to the description on the bronze plaque known as the Hokke Sessō-zu (銅板法華説相図 dōban hokke sessō zu), which is enshrined at Hase-dera,the temple was first built in 686 and dedicated to Emperor Tenmu, who was suffering from a disease. Later, in the year 727, the temple was expanded by order of Emperor Shōmu and a statue of the eleven-faced Kannon was placed near the original temple that enshrined the bronze plaque. The temple has been burned down and rebuilt as many as ten times since the 10th century.
During the Heian period the temple was favored by members of the nobility such as the authors of the Kagerō Nikki and the Sarashina Nikki. Hase-dera was consistently popular with visitors, helped by the fact it was situated on what was then the route to the Ise Shrine.Later still, Hase-dera flourished as one of the centers of the reformed Shingon Buddhism, particularly after the arrival of priest Sen'yo from Negoro-ji in 1588.
The current Main Hall is a reconstruction of 1650 built using donations from Tokugawa Iemitsu. A covered wooden staircase (登廊 noborirō), 200 metres long, leads to the Hall from the Niō Gate.Visitors are especially numerous in the spring, when the 700 Chinese peonies that line the staircase are in bloom,and in the fall, when the leaves of the many maple trees in the temple grounds have turned red.

The temple is located a bit far from other major temples in Nara city, but I'd like you to visit this this temple if you have time in Nara prefecture.

Hasedera temple is one of the Buddhist temples which I'd like you to stop by when you come to Nara prefecture of Japan, although the temple is a bit far off in the distance from major cities.
The temple's principal image, the eleven-headed Kannon bodhisattva is awesome!
The temple is called the temple of flowers because people can enjoy various beautiful flowers in all seasons in its precincts.
Wouldn't you come all the way to Hasedera temple if you have time in Nara prefecture? I suppose this temple is worth your effort.

In Japan, there are multiple temples with the name of Hasedera. This Hasedera temple （長谷寺） is located in Sakurai City in Nara Prefecture. This temple was established in 686 AD as a dedication to then Japanese Emperor.
This temple is #8 in the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage of Western Japan.

Hase-dera (長谷寺) is one of the great Buddhist temples in the city of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, famous for housing a massive wooden statue of Kannon. The temple is the fourth of the 33 stations of the Bandō Sanjūsankasho pilgrimage circuit dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten.
The temple originally belonged to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, but eventually became an independent temple of the Jōdo shū sect.
The statue is one of the largest wooden statues in Japan, with a height of 9.18 metres (30.1 ft), and is made from camphor wood and gilded in gold. It has 11 heads, each of which represents a different phase in the search for enlightenment.
According to legend, the statue is one of two images of Kannon carved by a monk named Tokudō in 721. The camphor tree was so large, according to legend, that he decided that he could carve two statues with it. One was enshrined in Hase-dera in the city of Nara, Yamato Province, while the other was set adrift in the sea to find the place that it had a karmic connection with. It washed ashore on Nagai Beach on the Miura Peninsula near Kamakura in the year 736. The statue was immediately brought to Kamakura where a temple was built to honor it.
The temple also commands an impressive view over Kamakura's bay and is famous for its hydrangeas, which bloom along the Hydrangea Path in June and July. The temple is built on two levels and also includes an underground cave. The cave, called benten kutsu cave, contains a long winding tunnel with a low ceiling and various statues and devotionals to Benzaiten, the sea goddess and the only female of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology.
Kaikozan Hase-dera is also part of the Kamakura pilgrimage circuit, also consisting of 33 sites, and is station 4 of the 33 temples of the Kantō Pilgrimage.

Hase-dera Temple Founded in 686!
Hase-dera Temple lies along the Hatsuse-gawa River in the eastern part of Sakurai City in central Nara Prefecture, and is the head temple of the Buzan sect of Shingon-shu Buddism. It is believed that this temple was founded by the priest Tokudo Shonin, who in it enshrined the Juichimen-kan'non, an eleven-faced Kan'non (Goddess of Mercy) statue, by order of the Emperor Shomu of the 8th century. The worship of the Kan'non became widely favoured after the 9th century, and many noble women and ladies-in-waiting at the imperial court in Kyoto came to worship at this temple.
The main temple, built in the 'butai-zukuri' style (with corridors surrounding the building like a stage) in the mid 17th century with a donation from Tokugawa Iemitsu, is one of the largest wooden structures in Nara. You will feel the atmosphere of the olden days emanating from this structure, as well as from the bell tower and principle statue of the 10-meter tall golden Kan'non with eleven faces.
Some 7,000 Chinese peonies are planted on both sides of the 200-meter-long corridor from the Ni-o-mon Gate to the main temple. The large-flowered peonies bloom beautifully from late April to early May to welcome the many visitors. A statue of Tokudo Shonin is housed in Hoki-in Temple, which is believed to have been his retirement home. It has a 13-layer mausoleum tower, and a Shonin's step-stone, that is believed to make your wishes come true by touching it.
In front of the gate of Hase-dera Temple is a temple town, where many souvenir shops stand. You can also enjoy bathing at the nearby Hase-dera-onsen Hot Spring.
