Paranormal activity at Haslam's Florida's Largest Book Store
Haslem's is Florida's largest book store and also the place for some paranormal activity of a famous book author Jack Kerouac. Kerouac frequented the shop and had arguments with the owner. It is believed that his ghost now haunts this book store located in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Places for books in Saint Petersburg, Part 2
One of my favorite things about Saint Petersburg is that books are taken seriously here--at least, more seriously than in most of North America. For example, a great many people read books on public transit, whereas it is more common to see people looking at newspapers, business spreadsheets on their laptops, or video games on portable gaming devices on North American transit. (You see some of those here in Petersburg too, but books have a definite edge.) And when people here read books, they're usually reading real literature: Old hardcover novels with time-worn bindings or reprints of the like, not vampire novels or books about economic crashes. Since I'm here and places for books are among my favorite places in the city, I thought I'd make a video showing some of the best places to browse books in Saint Petersburg. As usual, I didn't get any interior footage because I didn't want to be kicked out of any of these places, but this should give you at least an idea of what's available in the city.
By the way, the final segment here, where I'm in front of the Bukvoed on Vasilievsky, was filmed earlier on, when I had done an initial tour of the bookshops in Petersburg and found them mostly taken over by Bukvoed; I was not even aware of the existence of Dom Knigi or the Krupskaya book marketplace until later, so if what I say at the end seems a little incongruous with everything else in this video, it's because it was filmed when I was young and ignorant.

Record Store Day 2014 @ Daddy Kool Records, St. Petersburg FL
Another Record Store Day has come and gone! Thank you to everyone who came out and supported their local record store this weekend!
This video gives a quick glimpse at all of the madness, from the weeks of preparation behind the scenes, to the hundreds of people lining up in the wee hours of the morning to pick up special releases by their favorite artists, to the great bands we hand lighting up downtown until last call! Here at Daddy Kool, RSD14 was a huge success, but we couldn't have done it without the unwavering support of our dedicated local patrons, friends, and family. You're the reason we're still going strong after all of these years, and you're the reason why we will continue to do our best to serve our community everyday. Thank you so much for your support!

Grace A. Comerford, age 10, author of Power of Purple: Jackie's Purple Ninja Story
Grace A. Comerford, age 10, is an awesome storyteller of a kids book written by a kid. Power of Purple: Jackie's Purple Ninja Story is about a Purple Ninja who lives in the woods and fights for good, by problem solving, friendships and her amazing jumpiness. Grace is in fifth grade and wants to inspire kids to write their own stories too. Several local grade schools have introduced the book to their grade school students.
Jackie is half normal kid and half best super hero of all-time. She lives in Bugger Creek Forest and when she turns into Purple Ninja she fights for good against imaginative villains, including Asmerelda, whose hair is shaped like a lightning bolt, lives in a power-line 'forest,' and can shoot lighting bolts from her hands.
In this video, Grace A. Comerford visits the inspiration for Bugger Creek Forest, Brooker Creek Preserve near Tampa, Florida and a power-line 'forest' near her home which inspired Asmerelda's power-line forest.
You can just see it, now read it! It's on Kindle and Amazon and at Haslam's book store, which is featuring it for the next two months in at 2025 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, Florida. Stop by and ask for owner Raymond V. Hinst Jr.
Don't doubt the Power of Purple, or the storytelling power of kids!

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
