Fes el Bali - Morocco
#morocco #fes #andy1803
Fes el-Bali is the oldest part of Fez, one of the imperial city of Morocco. It is the historical district founded between 789 and 808 a.c. by Idrisid dynasty. It includes the medina and its fortified walls all around. Fez el-Bali is surely the biggest car-free human settlement in the world, a dedalo of narrow roads and alleys in which is easy to loose the sense of orientation. It is also famous for its Al Karaouine University, the oldest in the world. In 1981 UNESCO inserted the site into the human’s heritage list.
A tour of Morocco should include a visit to Fes el-Bali at least once. It is a medieval town, almost preserved and still inhabited. Its typical architecture witnesses the imperial past of the city with several madrasas, mosques and noble buildings. Its merchant soul is still visible almost everywhere with shops, stalls and street markets. Traditional handmade manufacturers work today using the same middle age techniques, as you may observe visiting the leather tanneries or the copper workshops. Walking into Fes el-Bali is a full immersion in Morocco’s traditions and culture, feeling the vibes of this wonderful country.
Someone says that it’s easy to get lost there, as the district is huge and it can be challenging to understand where you are. Maps are useless. Don’t worry about that. Take your time, bring a compass with you and move in like an explorer. You will enjoy it. Start from Bab Bou Jeloud (the Blue door) and walk into the heart of the medina. Surprises wait for you behind each corner, inside any wood roof alley, in unexpected squares or just in front of an open door. Anyway, if you don’t like the risk, you can look for a guide to bring you in this iconic labyrinth.
There are several guesthouses or hotels to overnight inside the medina or just close to main doors. Choose a riad, the typical local accomodation. They are comfortable, often cheaper and charming. And don’t forget street food. There is plenty of cafè, tea rooms, restaurants and open air kitchens ready to satisfy your taste.
This short film has been filmed mainly with a little action cam, the Eken H8R. Some footage have been shot with a mirrorless Olympus OM-D EM5 MKII. Photos are by Francesca Sparatore and her Nikon D3100. Cyberlink PowerDirector 15 for post-production.
The track “Coast” is by great Silent Partner and is available in YouTube library.
Special thanks to the two musicians/dancers of Place Seffarine. I don't know their name but they are great.

Walking Tour of Modern Marrakech — Morocco Africa Video Walk【4K】????????
A Camera Floating Among The Crowd. Walking Around The Modern Area of Marrakech Gueliz in 4K by Wanna Walk.
A real traveler needs a holistic view of a city so in sharp contrast to the Marrakech medina area, Gueliz it's a must see to get a better idea of how Morocco's really is. This is where the modern Morocco citizens like spend time. As you may know, there are two very distinctive areas in Marrakesh: one is the Old Medina (old city) and the new Marrakesh, which is a kinda European style district called Ville Nouvelle or Gueliz. If you wanna walk, everything can be seen on foot but a GPS is key.

It was an a surprise to find the modern part of Marrakech because it linked modernity with tradition. Beautiful buildings respecting Arabic architecture painted with Marroquin traditional colors, shapes, balconies (re-inventing the Jewish characteristic of the Medina), etc.
Large avenues, gardens full of beautiful and exotic plants, flowers and trees, imposing squares, lovely fountains but above all a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. If you know other Moroccan towns or even other African towns, you will be positively surprised by the organization, cleanness, security and diversity of Marrakech
Ville Nouvelle or Gueliz it's the complete opposite to old Marrakech in terms of what the people are like, how they dress, food that's eaten and atmosphere. Worth a visit just to see a new angle. The heart of the new part of Marrakech, the Gueliz region offers an alternative vibe to the traditional and relaxed old medina atmosphere. Here we explore the most unmissable activities in this Moroccan area.

I must say that this it's not the best of places to go to in Marrakech if you only want to know the tradicional old culture but, after a few days, the Marrakech Old Medina may overwhelm you. Yes, it's beautiful and nostalgic and there are tons of things to see and but, you may need a break. Who doesn't? This area its just a few minutes away the Medina Souks and it's more relaxed. You will find a more western style of life with coffee stores and shops. Most people speak English, French, Spanish and of course, Arabic. This is the place where you find essentials things like water, groceries, SIM cards, Zara Store, H&M, Starbucks and even Mcdonalds. Although Gueliz its modern and cosmopolitan, you feel you still in Africa. Very modern buildings, nice shops and restaurants, very lively neighbourhood.

This area it's completely different from the Medina and closer to the feeling of big cities around the world. Interesting to see how Moroccan culture applies to a modern environment. Give yourself a pause from these chaotic narrow streets and dust from the Old Medina. Jemaa el Fna is not far from Gueliz. You can just walk, it's close and pretty safe. Anyway a 5 euro taxi can ride you there. New town is part of the Marrakech culture too and you'll be close to the action and culture.
How do you say it: Marrakech or Marrakesh? Don’t worry, both are okay! Marrakech Morocco in 4K by Wanna Walk - The common English spelling is Marrakesh and Marrakech in French is also widely used. I was told that the name Marrakech comes from the words amur kush which means The Land of God. This is the third largest city in Morocco with less population than Casablanca and Fez. The city lies near of the Atlas Mountains and it's pretty close to the Sahara Desert. Be sure to also visit the square of Jemaa El-Fna is very popular, in particular in the Marrakech's night. Lovely atmosphere at night in Gueliz, vibrant and safe. Much more fun to stay in Gueliz and then dip in and out of the medina.

Medina of Fez in Fes, Morocco
The medina of Fez was founded in the 9th century at around the same time that Islam arrived in Morocco and the imperial rule that would create the country began. It grew in the 12th and 13th centuries to about the size that it is today.
Many of the buildings that loom over the small streets are from this period, renovated to keep up with modern usages but retaining the original character of this period.
Many of the madrasas, the fondouks, the mosques and the palaces – they were built during the great expansion of these early centuries. You can see the detailed design on their walls and with their structures.
There’s a good reason that the Medina of Fez has been named as a World Heritage Site!
Things to do in Fez Medina…
Bab Bou Jeloud (Blue Gate)
One of the first things you might see, depending on how you come in, is the Blue Gate. Officially it’s called Bab Bou Jeloud and it’s a popular meeting spot.
This western entrance originally was quite a simple gate that was built in the 12th century – and you can see that on the left side.
This new gate was built in 1913 by the French when they controlled the city. Its design was inspired by Moorish architecture, which makes it look much older than it actually is.
Al Attarine Madrasa
This madrasa (Islamic school) is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Medina of Fez. It was built in the early 1300s and is next to the spice and perfume market.
The highlight in the central courtyard that opens onto the prayer hall. The colourful mosaic tiles and carved stucco create a detailed work of art on the walls.
Around the courtyard are the student rooms that are very modest by comparison but give you an insight into the life of the school.
Bou Inania Madrasa
The other madrasa in Fez Medina that is worth visiting is Bou Inania Madrasa. Don’t think just because you’ve seen one, you don’t need to see the other. They are each special in their own ways.
Bou Inania Madrasa was built in the middle of the 1300s and has an enormous brass entrance door. Inside, you’ll find the colourful geometric tilework and carved plaster plus lattice screens made from cedar.
Unlike most madrasas, this one has its own mosque and so you’ll also notice the tall minaret rising up from the top.
Chouara Tannery
The tanneries are one of the things that tourists seem to want to see – but if they don’t appeal to you, you’re not really missing out. So don’t worry.
The largest of the tanneries is Chouara Tannery and there you’ll find men working away, putting the animal skins into white liquids to soften them and then dyes to give them colour, before they are dried in the sun and become leather.
There are a lot of touts who will offer to take you the the tannery… for a price. The shops around the area may let you go in to have a look… but will expect either a tip or that you buy something. And you may even be able to pay someone at the main entrance to go in and take some photos.
However you go, expect to be hassled for money and have to pay at least someone something. There really isn’t a free view here.
University of Al Quaraouiyine
According to both UNESCO and Guinness World Records, Al Quaraouiyine is the oldest university in the world, having been founded in 859.
It is not as visually-spectacular as the madrasas I have mentioned but it still has a beautiful design with arched doorways, a tiled floor, and colourful artworks.
The university is attached to a mosque and so entry is only permitted for Muslims. There has recently been an extensive renovation of the buildings and I have been told that, if you are non-Muslim, you may be able to go into the library (the entrance is on the other side to the mosque) so give that ago. Otherwise you can still look through the main door.
Zaouia de Moulay Idriss
It’s also worth mentioning the mausoleum of Zaouia de Moulay Idriss, which is dedicated to the founder of Fez. Idris II died in 828 and nobody knows for sure where his body is. However, it’s believed that he was buried on this spot.
The shrine that’s here today was built in 1720, although there had been other versions on the site for several centuries. The minaret is the tallest in Fez Medina.
Only Muslims are allowed to enter. Inside is a central courtyard with a white marble fountain, with the mausoleum chamber at the southern end. Non-Muslims should be able to get a bit of a view through the main entrance.
Dar Batha
The Dar Batha – or Batha Museum – was a summer palace built in the 19th century that was turned into a museum in 1915.
It has an excellent collection of traditional arts and crafts from Morocco and will be of interest to anyone who’s been taking note of the beautiful designs here in Fez.
Dar Batha is particularly known for its collection woodcarving, although there are also examples of the colourful tile mosaics, embroidery, and carpets.

Lovely atmosphere at night in Gueliz, vibrant and very safe.
