Fly fishing in Paradise - New Zealand
Join me on a trip to the south of New Zealand's South Island where I join Wanaka based guide Jake Berry on an overnight hike-in fishing adventure. The weather turns it on and the place is spectacular for my first visit here with willing trout in simply majestic surroundings.

NZ Fly Fishing - Traveltruly Presents - Homecoming Waters
At the end of 2015 I was heading home for Christmas and to re-explore the waters I grew up fishing. After spending a full year fishing down south it was definitely a different prospect with smaller fish but made up for in huge numbers. I then headed further south to catch up with Gareth from Trouthunting NZ and fished a couple of central north island rivers before heading back to Wanaka to bring in the new year!

Issue #40 brings Catch viewers back to one of my most favorite places on earth, New Zealand. This time I flew to the South Island’s Cedar Lodge to film its owner Chris Daughters on his favorite South Island rivers. The lodge is located on the Makarora River, just about an hour’s drive north of the adventurist town of Wanaka. New Zealand is particularly special to me, as I first traveled to the country nearly 15 years ago in search of the hidden streams and huge trout known to live there. Then, my wife and I brought only a small camera, backpacks, a tent and fly rods. This time, I returned alone with my camera gear, multi-rotor aerial equipment, an outlandish number of batteries and one rod (packed with a glimmer of hope that I’d have a minute to fish instead of film.) My purpose was to capture a day in the life of Cedar Lodge’s owner Chris Daughters, a U.S. citizen who resides in New Zealand part-time with his wife and two young children. Thanks to the phenomenal helicopter pilot, Dion Matheson, we flew over rocky peaks and into broad river valleys. We landed in remote and trout-packed pools, within reach of giant feeding rainbows and browns. Thanks to Chris, his wife Shauna, pilot Dion and the folks at Cedar Lodge for getting me and my camera to the hot spots. New Zealand has been, and remains to be, my favorite fly fishing destination on Earth. It’s also my favorite place to film, of course! Sit back, relax…take notes if you must….and enjoy the special double-feature length film “Pure New Zealand.”

Fly Fishing in Southland, New Zealand
Fly fishing Southland New Zealand-Southland is a fishing paradise which attracts anglers from across the globe to its clear running, trout-laden rivers.
The Southland Plains are bisected by four major rivers, the Aparima, Waiau, Oreti and Mataura which boast a seemingly never-ending supply of picturesque and sparsely populated banks.
Under big skies and surrounded by awesome mountain ranges, you can escape all distractions as you cast for brown trout, rainbow trout and salmon.
The Mataura River is one of the best trout fishing rivers in the world. It has the highest population and catch rate of any river in New Zealand. It is also famous for its hatches and spinner falls.
With easy public access, plentiful fish and water so clear it is often described as 'gin-clear', the Mataura Valley is a 'dry-fly Mecca', and Gore is known as the 'Brown Trout Capital of the World'.
