Research Frontiers - Hatfield Marine Science Center
In this Oregon State University program, researchers at the Hatfield Marine Science Center share their ongoing projects: From research on endangered mammals to undersea volcanoes, learn about what cutting-edge research is being conducted at OSU and what it reveals about our seas.
Featured research programs include:
The movement of the tectonic plates by Robert Dziak, professor at the Cooperative Institute for Marine Resources Studies at Oregon state University.
The world of undersea volcanoes by Bill Chadwick, professor of agricultural sciences at Oregon State University.
The development of new strains of disease-resistant oysters through a mollusk aquaculture program by Chris Langdon, professor of fisheries and wildlife at Oregon State University.
Saving Endangered Mammals' which focuses on the pioneering work of Bruce Mate, professor of fisheries and wildlife, and his work that uses satellites to track the endangered Blue whales.
George Boehlert, director of the Hatfield Marine Science Center, talks about the research facilities where it houses multiple state and federal agencies whose researchers work in partnership on pressing issues.
Newport Oregon Aerial 4K
Newport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 9,989, an increase of nearly 5% over its 2000 population; as of 2013, it had an estimated population of 10,117.[5]
Newport is the county seat of Lincoln County.[6] It is also the home of the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Nye Beach, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and Rogue Ales. In October 1962, wind gusts at Newport reached 138 miles per hour (222 km/h) before the wind gauge stopped working. This occurred during the Columbus Day Windstorm, which the National Weather Service has named one of Oregon's top 10 weather events of the 20th century.

Learn more about using AWS Snowball Edge in remote locations for data collection and analysis here -
With AWS Snowball Edge, The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) at Oregon State University can collect and analyze 100 TB of real-time oceanic and coastal data with no intermediate steps, giving the organization the ability to analyze images immediately using onboard compute capabilities. HMSC is a leading marine laboratory and the campus for Oregon State University’s research, education, and outreach in marine and coastal sciences. Before using Snowball Edge, the organization had been collecting data on disk drives aboard its ship, which it would manually load on to servers in the university’s data center, requiring hours of manual labor. AWS Snowball Edge gives HMSC a portable, high-capacity device that it uses remotely to capture and pre-process collected data.

Volunteer program and renovation at science center
Oregon Sea Grant operates the public education wing -- known as the Visitor Center -- of the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. As part of that, Oregon Sea Grant oversees the recruitment and training of volunteers who enrich visitors' experiences.
In 2018, aquarium tank stands at the Visitor Center were renovated. Contractors replaced the 21-year-old metal supports then sculpted artificial rockwork around and under the tanks.

Oregon Coast Aquarium's Coastal America Student Summit video
In cooperation with the Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center and the Siletz Valley Early College Academy, the Oregon Coast Aquarium sponsored several young adults to participate in this year's Coastal America Student Summit on the Ocean and Climate in Washington, DC. The theme of the national summit is the ocean is a major influence on weather and climate. Our team of teenagers looked at hypoxia, acidification and their impacts on local invertebrates along the Oregon coast. The kids have been working hard and are excited to present to twenty similar teams, scientists and government sponsors. This video, a parody of a nightly newscast, is part of the teen's final project for Coastal America.
