Hatirjheel = হাতিরঝিল is a lakefront located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It has been also a transportation medium for minimizing traffic congestion the area. হাতিরঝিল is also known as Hatirjheel Begunbari.

It has been popular as a recreational spot for residents of not only living nearby but also the hole Dhaka city since it’s opening. However, the construction of this project was dome by Bangladesh Army and the Special Works Organization (SWO).
People says that Bhawal Raja used to keep his tamed elephants at Dhaka Pilkhana and the elephants used to take baths in this lake and elephants were taken to the lake mainly through the Hatirpool and Elephant Road. That’s why the name of the lake is Hatirjheel.
Hatirjheel is located at the centre of the Dhaka city and the place started from Banasree in the north to Sonargaon Hotel in the south. The area is surrounded by Gulshan, Tejgaon, Badda, Banasree, Rampura, Maghbazar and Niketon. This project of the lake made the transportation much easier for the people living near it.
It is now considered to be one of the most spectacular places in Dhaka and favourite recreational places for the city dwellers and tourists. As most of the area of Dhaka city is congested with buildings and it is hard to find fresh due to have air pollution, Hatirjheel always attracts the city dwellers with its natural cold fresh air and free spech. Water boat and Chokrakar Bus services are available for transport within the lake area and the road around it. At night, it takes a new look with various colourful lights of different hues. Especially the water shows during Friday 9:00 pm the bridges and dancing shower looks like a fairy land. Numerous pedestrians, local and foreign visitors are found here all over the day 24/7. Flowering shrubs and small trees are everywhere which decorated the lake. It is a great place for everyone friends, family, children and especially for couples. People do jogging regularly here in morning and evening in fresh air.
On 2nd January, 2013 the Hatirjheel project was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After the inauguration Hatirjheel project opened for the general people.

Urban planner, architect Iqbal Habib, who heads the consultant firm of the Hatirjheel-Begunbari development project, said that the Bhawal Raja used to keep his tamed elephants at Pilkhana.
He said that the elephants were taken to the wetlands through the Elephant Road and Hatirpool.

It facilitated the connectivity between eastern and western Dhaka. The government have been implemented a great initiative to turn Hatirjheel project into a better attractive site for visitors introducing some new entertainment facilities in the project area. The area was constructed under Bangladesh Army and the Special Works Organization (SWO). It is now a popular recreational spot for residents of Dhaka.
Today we will take a visual tour, seeing the latest renovations of this project.
Hatirjheel project at a glance:
Project area: 302 acres
Located at the centre of the capital city, Dhaka.
Coordinate of 23°44′58.47″N 90°23′48.35″E.
The place is surrounded by Tejgaon, Gulshan, Badda, Banasree, Niketon, Maghbazar etc.
Fourth revised scope of works included a theater, laser-show, water buses and water-taxi service, fast food shops and restaurants.
Hatirjheel Area Integrated Development Project completed with an estimated cost of Tk 2,236.02 crore by 2016.
Rajuk, assisted by the Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED), Dhaka Wasa, Special Work Organisation (16 Engineers Construction Battalion) of Bangladesh Army, is implementing the project.
History of the name Hatirjheel: Elephants of Dhaka's Pilkhana used to take bath in these wetlands – there the name comes Hatirjheel.

Integrated drainage management
Boat ride is available for family amusement
Recreation facilities in terms of walkways and urban beautification
Water games, restaurants, viewing deck, landscaping , park, u loops, police box etc.
Hatirjheel now turned into one of the most favorite recreational places in Dhaka. Huge number of tourists visit the site every day to enjoy the reflection of light and to feel the fresh air. This project offers a significant contributions in reducing traffic congestion in adjacent areas and became one of the best greenery and clean amusement place in Dhaka City.
