Escape the crowds and join me as I leave camp on the banks of the Murray River and make my way through the Hattah - Kulkyne National Park. The views from the Warepil Lookout and relaxing my Lake Mournpall are just a couple of the highlights on offer.

Today i leave the homestead with the Mrs and drive 600+ KM into the Mildura North West Victorian, tri-border region with New South Wales and South Australia.
We head to Hattah Kulkyne National Park and find an amazing beach camp on the banks of the Murray River. A truly amazing camp and experience as we had the entire place to ourselves. This is part 1 guys and i have to say, the calm before the storm. Take note of how nice this day is and keep that in mind for part two. lol, Enjoy!.

Hattah Kulkyne National Park Sept 2018
Hattah Kulkyne national park is situated towards the north western corner of Victoria, Australia. There is a system of lakes that are filled when the Murray River rises enough (or can be now watered by large pumps when necessary). It's really nice country ranging from giant old River Red Gum trees to Cypress Pine and red sand dune country. Lots of bird life. Some excellent camp grounds - albeit a tad expensive these days with long drop loos and tank water but no other facilities. Or you can camp for free in various spots along the Murray River. I spent a few days there in Sept 2018 and this is my video/photo album of the trip. And Ooops, it's Lake Mournpall not Mournpool - my bad! Worth a trip if you're in the area, but you do have to book in advance via the internet now .

G'day Beautiful Tube of U'ers. Today we wake to a rather cloudy and overcast morning. After coffee and a wash we decide to drive the parks main track and stumble upon Kangaroos, Emu's and amazing sights and camping spots but before we depart we receive a visit from 7 wild Goats who deliver an amazing display of head butting madness.
Two hours later, it all goes Pete Tong as the weather and Mother Nature decides she wants to have some fun. Let's just say the Mooster's had to exit stage left sharpish.
Turned out to be a great fun day with a change of location some three hours North of our original camp. Enjoy!.

Hattah-Kulkyne and Murray-Kulkyne Biosphere Reserve is a biosphere reserve in the Australian state of Victoria located to the southern bank of the Murray River to the south-east of the city of Mildura on land occupied by the following protected areas - the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and the Murray-Kulkyne Park.
The biosphere reserve was described by UNESCO in 2016 as: The Hattah-Kulkyne and Murray-Kulkyne Biosphere Reserve is located in Southeast Australia. It comprises three main habitats: riveraise woodlands, savanna woodlands and saline shrublands. The Murray River flows through the reserve and is connected to several wetlands. However, due to the semi-arid climate it only fills intermittently with water. The main land formations are saline flats that contain shallow soils overlying gypsum, dune fields that contain relics of Pleistocence sand ridges, and floodplains that are formed of a quarterly alluvium.
The biosphere reserve was established in 1981 and is managed by Parks Victoria.

Due to the flooding in early 2011 many of the lakes at Hattah Kulkyne are now interconnected. We were able to paddle from Lake Hattah campground across the flood plains which were bone dry the year before and now under 2 metres of water through to Lake Lockie then along the Chalka Creek. The trip took 3 days though could be done in 2 days, we didn't see any other people on the whole trip which was great. I highly recommend this trip assuming the water levels are high enough, particularly if you like bird watching which were in abundance.

The Hattah-Kulkyne National Park is a national park in the Mallee district of Victoria, Australia. The 48,000-hectare (120,000-acre) national park is situated adjacent to the Murray River, approximately 417 kilometres (259 mi) northwest of Melbourne with the nearest regional centre being Mildura. The national park was proclaimed on 7 June 1960 (1960-06-07) and is a popular destination for bushwalkers and school camping trips.

Reintroduction of the Mallee Emu-wren to Ngarkat Conservation Park - full
Re-establishing populations via reintroductions is essential to reduce extinction risk and increase the number and stability of the Mallee emu-wren population nationally.
This video tells the story of the process of the successful translocation of 78 Mallee emu-wrens from Victoria’s Murray Sunset and Hattah-Kulkyne National Parks back into their former range within South Australia’s Ngarkat Conservation Park, to re-establish a lost population.
This project is supported by the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program and NRM levies, as well as contributions from all project partners including BirdLife Australia, Zoos SA, the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning, Parks Victoria, Rotary International, La Trobe University, Monash University and Zoos Victoria.
