Video Credits Column Companies usually have two distinct approaches to Financial services type of business. One approach would be a bank which simply buys an insurance company or an investment bank, keeps the original brands of the acquired firm, and adds the acquisition to its holding company simply to diversify its earnings. Outside the U.S. (e.g., in Japan), non-financial services companies are permitted within the holding company. In this scenario, each company still looks independent, and has its own customers, etc. In the other style, a bank would simply create its own brokerage division or insurance division and attempt to sell those products to its own existing customers, with incentives for combining all things with one company. Joseph Klein: Against the gusts of blank repose, a threshold that persists (2018)
Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra
Christopher Russell, conductor
West Coast premiere performance
April 14, 2019 at the Haugh Performing Arts Center, Glendora, CA
This performance was coached by and performed in the presence of the composer.
Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Joseph Klein is a composer of solo, chamber, and large ensemble works, including instrumental, vocal, electroacoustic, and intermedia compositions. His music—which has been described as “a dizzying euphoria... like a sonic tickling with counterpoint gone awry” (NewMusicBox) and exhibiting a “confident polyvalence [that] heightens its very real excitement” (The Wire)—reflects an ongoing interest in processes drawn from such sources as fractal geometry, chaos, and systems theory, often inspired by natural phenomena. His works frequently incorporate theatrical elements, whether as a component of the extra-musical references or as an organic outgrowth of the musical narrative itself. Literature is another important influence on his work, with recent compositions based on the writings of Franz Kafka, Elias Canetti, Alice Fulton, W.S. Merwin, Milan Kundera, and John Ashbery.
Klein has collaborated with a number of new music specialists in the US and Europe, having composed works for the International Contemporary Ensemble, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, cellist Madeleine Shapiro, saxophonist Andreas van Zoelen (Raschèr Saxophone Quartet), flutists Helen Bledsoe (Ensemble Musikfabrik) and Elizabeth McNutt, contrabassoonist James Rogers (Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), bassist Michael Hartt (Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra), pianist Redi Llupa, and glass harmonica specialist Thomas Bloch. He has also worked with vocalists Joan LaBarbara and Dora Ohrenstein (Philip Glass Ensemble), the Elgart/Yates Guitar Duo, and the music-telling troupe Tales & Scales. He has been a featured guest composer at academic institutions, conferences, and music festivals throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Klein's compositions have been performed and broadcast internationally, and have been recognized by such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Composers Forum/Jerome Foundation, the American Music Center, the Gaudeamus Foundation of Amsterdam, and ASCAP. His recorded works are available on the Innova, Centaur, Crystal, and Mark labels.
Klein holds degrees in composition from Indiana University (DM, 1991), University of California, San Diego (MA, 1986), and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (BA, 1984). His composition teachers have included Harvey Sollberger, Claude Baker, Robert Erickson, and Roger Reynolds. He is currently Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of North Texas College of Music, where he has served as Chair of Composition Studies since 1999.
The composer has written the following about his work:
Against the gusts of blank repose, a threshold that persists is dedicated to the memory of my son, Gabriel Paul Klein, who took his life in September 2015 at the age of 23. The work’s title is derived from two lines in Alice Fulton’s poem “Silencer,” from the collection Powers of Congress (1990)—a poem that itself deals with the subject of suicide—and is an allusion to the persistent struggle with that boundary between life and death (“blank repose”).
The work is characterized by sharp juxtapositions of contrasting—often conflicting—musical elements, including sections of restless energy, obsessive ostinato figures, and intrusive interjections, occasionally relieved by stretches of placid, suspended music. The disjunct, fragmentary structure that results, combined with the inherently static, non-developmental nature of the material itself, is intended to subvert the typical linear narrative. An important unifying element of the work is the pitch cell G-A-Bb-E, which is the basis of a repeating interval sequence used to generate the symmetrical, non-octave-repeating scale that is used pervasively throughout the work. This scale is most clearly presented in the ascending quasi-ostinato bass line that first occurs after the slow introductory section. Prime numbers and rhythmic patterns based on Morse Code are also used as unifying structural elements.
Against the gusts of blank repose, a threshold that persists, originally composed for wind orchestra, was completed in September 2016. The work was revised and transcribed for orchestra in June 2018, and first performed on 27 February 2019 by the University of North Texas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Clay Couturiaux.

Copland: Our Town (1940)
Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra
Susanna Cervantes, graduate conductor
Recorded Nov. 10, 2018 at the Haugh Performing Arts Center, Glendora CA
Copland wrote the score to the film version of Thornton Wilder's play in 1940. Comparable to Copland’s other orchestral suite, Appalachian Spring, Our Town is smaller in scale, but holds the same traditional Copland characteristics: the sunrise wake up call in the beginning, the call and response, exploiting the reflective quality of the woodwinds, brass chorales, and the desperately aching sounds of the strings.
He explained, For the film version, they were counting on the music to translate the transcendental aspects of the story. I tried for clean and clear sounds and in general used straight-forward harmonies and rhythms that would project the serenity and sense of security of the story. It is dedicated to Leonard Bernstein.
Su Jin Susanna Cervantes is professional freelancer actively working in the greater Los Angeles area. As a cellist, Susanna has played in multiple ensembles such as Hollywood Youth Orchestra, USC Thornton Symphony, and APU Symphony Orchestra.
She has also performed in multiple chamber groups performing works by Barber, Brahms, Borodin, Franck, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, and many more. She has performed in masterclasses with Daniel Hoffman, Lynn Harrell, and Alisa Weilerstein. In addition, she frequents in collaboration with singer-songwriters such as Sleeping At Last, whose hits are featured on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy; grammy-nominated artist, Michelle Bloom; British Christian singer-songwriter, Matt Redman; and singer/actress, Jackie Tohn.
Susanna is an academic instructor at Orange County School of Arts, teaching String Literature and Music History. She is also a strings coach for the Symphony Orchestra at San Marino High School. Since 2011, Susanna has been a pianist and a music associate at First Baptist Church of Glendale, facilitating services and contracting musicians for the church. Susanna has been teaching cello privately throughout Southern California since 2010.
Susanna has received her BM in Cello Performance from Azusa Pacific University, and is currently studying with Professor Christopher Russell at Azusa Pacific University and will receive her MM in Instrumental Conducting in May of 2019.

Stephen P. Johnson: Wings of the Wind (2014 - World premiere)
Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra
Christopher Russell, conductor
Recorded November 7, 2014 at the Haugh Performing Arts Center, Glendora, CA
Filmed and edited by Brian Hartley.
Stephen P. Johnson is the founding dean of the College of Music and the Arts at Azusa Pacific University. Before coming to Azusa, he was associate professor of theory and composition and dean of the School of Church Music at Southwestern Seminary. His repertory includes various solo, chamber ensemble, large ensemble, and choral/orchestral performing forces that have been performed in recitals, concert halls, and music festivals across the United States. Johnson studied composition with Edwin T. Childs, George Flynn, Kurt Westerburg, Frederick Lesemann, Donald Crockett, and James Hopkins.
Some of Johnson’s performances and honors include winning the 1998 Phi Beta Mu Composition Competition for Illinois resident composers for his Fanfare on the Austrian Hymn; the selection of his woodwind quintet Windy City, for the 1999 Crane Festival of New Music with George Crumb; his orchestral work Before Dawn’s Twilight being selected for performance in the highly competitive New Music for Orchestra Concert by the USC Symphony in 2003; his Four Preludes of the River winning the 2004 Klienman Competition of DePaul University; the premiere in 2005 of his commissioned piece Libera me (revised) at the Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection in Hollywood; a commission in 2006 to accompany The Crucifixion and The Resurrection paintings at Forest Lawn, Hollywood, recorded at 20th Century Fox Studios; and the commissioned work Peace Ascends for the Southwestern Master Chorale which had a New York premier in 2011 at Lincoln Center.
The composer has written the following about his work:
Wings of the Wind is a work based on older sketches and is a departure from the pieces I have worked on in the past 10 years. In the first half of the work, this piece embraces more atmospheric textures and sudden shifts in sound an color that remind me of power and shift of the wind. The melody that grows among the cellos is representative to me of a developing journey of a person maturing in their understanding of themselves and how they interact with life, nature, and God. The cello line is then handed off to the violas in the second portion of the piece. This rustic dance melody is interrupted by other developing motives.
Three places in the Old Testament, God is referred to as riding on the wings of the wind. In each reference, this speaks to the strong power of God and the unpredictability of knowing the mind of God. These verses and my own experiences in observing the different effects of the wind inspired the direction of this piece.
