Cuba is a Caribbean island nation under communist rule. It has sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields, which play a part in the production of the country's legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses, 1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. Salsa music plays in the dance clubs and cabaret shows are performed at the famed Tropicana.

Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish: La Habana) is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 728.26 km2 (281.18 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure-laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592. Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the US battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.
Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the newer suburban districts. The city is the center of the Cuban government, and home to various ministries, headquarters of businesses and over 90 diplomatic offices. The current mayor is Marta Hernández from the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC). In 2009, the city/province had the 3rd highest income in the country.
The historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.The city is also noted for its history, culture, architecture and monuments.

STORYLINE:
(m) Millions of people gathered around the world on Friday to pay last respects to Pope John Paul II on the day of his funeral
Churches were filled to capacity in many places - except in Cuba.
As the funeral was taking place in Rome, in Cuba a Mass was held at Havana's Old Cathedral.
But a woman who identified herself as Maria Isabel was the only person in attendance.
No one else came to pray, no one else came to hear the sermon, and no one else came to the cathedral.
Maria Isabel prayed alone in the pews and took communion with the Cathedral's priest, Father Nestor Fornaris.
According to the priest low attendance is common for early Mass.
It's a Mass for a few people, for those who have the possibility to come. Sometimes nuns come that want to take advantage of the early hour and then have the day off. It's not a Mass for multitudes, said Fr. Fornaris.
Maria Isabel thinks attendance for this special mass was non-existent due to poor organisation on behalf of the Cuban Catholic Church.
It's the first time they've held Mass at this hour. It seems to me that people didn't know this. If people would have known, I think they would have come, she said.
Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega is at the Vatican participating in the Conclave.
Before his departure last Monday night, he held a funeral Mass in Havana for the Pope.
Dozens of diplomats and Cuban President Fidel Castro were in attendance.
There are no immediate plans for any additional masses to honour Pope John Paul II in Cuba.

CUBA: POPE JOHN PAUL II VISITS HAVANA CATHEDRAL
Natural Sound
The Pope appears a step closer to securing the release of some of Cuba's estimated 500 political prisoners.
The Vatican has confirmed that the Cuban Government has promised them an early response to the Holy Father's appeal for clemency for so-called prisoners of conscience.
The news came as the Pontiff headed for Havana Cathedral to address Catholic clergy as his five-day tour drew to a close.
The Pope's message has clearly struck a chord amongst Havana's youth - as the Holy Father was speaking to clergy in the city's cathedral; bands of young people were marching through the streets in an impromptu carnival.
The Pope himself threw away the script as he arrived at the cathedral - climbing out of the Pope mobile and going to bless onlookers who had gathered in pouring rain to catch a glimpse of him.
Everywhere he goes in Cuba there's no hiding the sheer delight on people's faces.
Even in the normally sombre atmosphere of the cathedral - Cuban flags were in evidence; being waved by nuns and priests who's mission was so hindered by years of official state atheism.
The Pope has travelled hundreds and hundreds of kilometres this week - no mean feat for a man who's health has often given cause for concern.
On occasion he has looked unsteady - but for the most part he has held up well to the gruelling schedule - a wipe of the papal brow the only concession he allowed himself as another hectic day drew towards a close.

STORYLINE
As part of preparations for the upcoming visit of Pope Benedict XVI, Havana's iconic cathedral has been transformed into an art installation.
Late on Sunday, residents were charmed by an attractive show of colourful slides, including an image of Benedict, that were projected onto the faade of the cathedral, accompanied by Gregorian chants.
The spectacle of light and colour covering the 18-century church located in Old Havana is the work of Italian-French artist Gaspare Di Caro.
For Di Caro, the event is a unique experience.
At this time I'm risking my professional life. What I mean is that I don't have a second chance at this. It's a one shot deal; either it works or it doesn't. And that's it, he says.
Di Caro lives in Brazil where he has created similar works, including projections on the Christ the Redeemer monument overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception (known in Spanish as La Catedral de la Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada de La Habana) is one of eleven Roman Catholic cathedrals in Cuba. It’s located in the Plaza de la Catedral, in the center of Old Havana. The thirty-four by thirty-five meter rectangular church serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana.
The church was built in a Baroque style with several Tuscan elements, and is considered one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Cuba. The building is mainly constructed from blocks of coral cut from sources in the Gulf of Mexico's ocean floor and, as a result, preserved marine fossils are present in the facade.
Legend has it that the cathedral once held remains of Christopher Columbus. In 1796, after the Peace of Basel was signed and Spain ceded most of Hispaniola to France, the remains of Columbus were moved and laid to rest in the cathedral's Altar of the Gospel. The gravestone read Oh Remains and Image of Great Columbus, Be Preserved One Thousand Years in the Funerary Urn. The remains were returned to Spain in 1898 after the Cuban War of Independence.
The Jesuits began construction of the cathedral in 1748 on the site of an earlier church, and it was completed in 1777, well after King Carlos III expelled the Jesuits from the island in 1767.
CATHEDRAL PLAZA OF HAVANA / La Plaza de la Catedral de La Habana.
Cathedral Square, former Plaza de la Ciénaga, is one of the most beautiful places of colonial Havana. It was the last of the main squares to be formed in the city during the second half of the sixteenth century.
In the 18th century, It became one of the fundamental centers of the city. Well-to-do families of Havana society built palaces and mansions that still exist. Its appearance changed completely during that century, it was renamed named Plaza de la Catedral after the old Church of the jesuits at one end of the square later elevated to the rank of Cathedral.
