EXPLORING THE FOREST | HAVANA-CUBA
Along the banks of the Almendares River is Parque Almendares, also known as Gran Parque Metropolitano or Bosque de La Habana (Havana’s Forest). This is the only urban forest in the city and is a recreational area for Habaneros that includes activities such as children’s playground, pony rides, mini-golf, boating and open-air snack bar. Also located here is Anfiteatro Almendares, the only amphitheater in Cuba designed for string-operated puppets where both children and adults can enjoy puppet shows, concerts, magic acts, etc. (

Havana City Tour, Cuba 11
Havana City Tour. Cuba - Bahia de la Habana, Hotel Nacional
Old Havana (Spanish La Habana Vieja) is the city center (downtown)
Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish La Habana) is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 728.26 km2 (281.18 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure-laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592.Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.
Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the newer suburban districts. The city is the center of the Cuban government, and home to various ministries, headquarters of businesses and over 90 diplomatic offices. The current mayor is Marta Hernández from the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).] In 2009, the city/province had the 3rd highest income in the country.
The city attracts over a million tourists annually, the Official Census for Havana reports that in 2010 the city was visited by 1,176,627 international tourists,a 20.0% increase from 2005. The historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The city is also noted for its history, culture, architecture and monuments.

Havana Homegrown: Inside Cuba's Urban Agriculture Revolution
This video from the nonprofit group SeedMoney ( ) looks at the urban agriculture revolution in Havana, Cuba and its origins.
Cuba is not only an island nation in terms of its geography, but also its economy and politics as a result of the US embargo and the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba's largest source of trade and aid until the Berlin Wall fell in 1991. Cut off from the world's pipeline of food, oil, chemical pesticides and fertilizers, Cuba embarked upon an ambitious program to grow as much of its own organic food as possible in the 1990s during what was known as the special period. This short video produced by the nonprofit group Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI) peeks into Havana's urban farms and gardens to see what lessons they have to offer other cities working to move toward sustainable food security.

With diverse indigenous, African, and European roots, Havana’s culture and architecture reflect Cuba’s complex history of conquest, slavery, liberation, and revolution. Chosen for its strategic location on the island’s northwestern coast, in the early sixteenth century, Havana grew into the largest port in Spain’s Caribbean colonies.
The original layout of Habana Vieja—Old Havana—is still intact. Building ordinances in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries preserved the city’s architectural integrity. Wrought-iron gates, internal courtyards, and stone colonnades adorn the buildings of its five main plazas.
Among some 900 surrounding historic structures, a few highlights include the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, one of the oldest existing forts in the Americas, the eighteenth-century Catedral de La Habana on the plaza by the same name, and the Museo de la Ciudad, housed in a baroque palace on Havana's original town square.
Even with international recognition, the work of preserving the historic city center remains ongoing.
Visitors from around the world flock to Cuba for its pristine beaches, exciting nightlife, and a fascinating, blended cultural heritage of art, music, and design.
Traveling to Cuba is much easier for U.S. citizens than it used to be, but check the State Department website for any current advisory notices.

Havana, Cuba - Part 3 - Best part of Cuba is the people!
Havana, Cuba - Part 3
The best part of Cuba is without a doubt, the Cuban People!
Our fourth day in Havana was one of our favorites. The sun came out and we hired an old Cuban convertible car and took a joy ride around the city! Our tour guide was great. The hightlight of the car ride was the Havana Forest with it's beautiful trees.
The best part of our day was walking around the streets of Havana, randomly talking to the Cuban people. We had amazing churros from a guy selling out of his house, met these crazy kids racing down a hill on self made carts made out of woods scraps and old bearings.
We ended the night with more rain, one of our best dinners at Paladar Cafe Laurent and a listening to some great jazz from Yasek Manzano y su Grupo at La Zorra y el Cuervo.
Great day!

Parque Almendares de la Habana. Central Park in Havana. Cuba
- VIAJES A CUBA Mareva Tours

Cuba: A tour of Havana through eyes of a dancer (360 video) - BBC News
Daniela Pom Juan is a 26 years old dancer from Havana. She takes the BBC on a 360 tour of her city, explaining the challenges and hopes of her generation and what President Barack Obama's visit means to her. When I was in primary school I couldn’t wear my little socks with the American flag on because it would have been considered 'ideological distraction'. These are very strong things, that are rooted deep in Cubans and that are now starting to change. It’s the base for every change to come.
