CUBA: The AMERICAN CLASSIC CARS from the 1950s in HAVANA ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Under dictator Fulgencio Batista in the 1950s, Cuba was a holiday destination for America and the mob and lots of American cars were imported from the US, which is only 90 miles away.
For over 60 years, American economic sanctions made new vehicles virtually unobtainable, which meant that the old Dodges, Chryslers, Fords and Chevrolets from the pre-Castro days are constantly mended and modified to keep them going.
Here's a video of these fabulous classic American cars, most of them battered beyond belief but still plying their trades as cabs on Havana's streets.
Cuba is a Caribbean island nation under communist rule. It has sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields, which play a part in the production of the country's legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses, 1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. Salsa music plays in the dance clubs and cabaret shows are performed at the famed Tropicana.

Great Museums of Havana: Curious about Cuba (webisode)
A preview of Great MuseumsTV's episode featuring the museums of Cuba, including the City of old Havana - a living museum - which aired on public television stations in December 2008.
GREAT MUSEUMS OF HAVANA: CURIOUS ABOUT CUBA -- narrated by Mariel Hemingway -- takes public television fans to a world largely unseen by U.S. viewers. GREAT MUSEUMS® producers Marc and Chesney Doyle worked with both the United States and the Cuban governments for nearly a year to gain access to the cultural treasures of Havana. Many American viewers may be surprised to learn that museums abound in Havana amid 500 years of architectural history. Program highlights include a stunning presentation of Cuban Art through the centuries at the National Museum of Fine Arts, as well as museums devoted to cigars, cars, rum, and revolution. Also featured: A spellbinding exploration of Ernest Hemingways life at the Hemingway House Museum, Finca Vigia, his home from 1940 to 1960; and, an insiders tour of the on-going restoration of the colonial district, Old Havana City, which is itself a living museum without walls and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. HAVANA - CLASSIC AMERICAN CARS - Rolling Car Museum
Think about Cuba and cigars, rum like Havana Club and yes ....classic American cars come to mind. Cuba has been described as a classic rolling car museum. No where else on earth is there such a collection of classic American cars of the 1950's as in Cuba and especially Havana. Many of them are taxis that are very much favoured by tourists. Many are collective taxis or almendron. That is a bonanza for the taxi owners as the fares are paid in CUCs the convertible peso that is equivalent to a US Dollar. There are those in Cuba who have access to CUCs and those - the vast majority - who only have the Cuban peso. The difference in buying power and standard of living is like day and night.
The U.S. embargo that took effect in 1961 stopped the flow of new cars, and most part with the result that time stood still. Still Cubans have been very resourceful in keeping these cars running as parts are interchanged from wherever to keep these cars running. The important part is exterior appearance.

Old Cars in Havana
Cuba is literally a rolling car museum. Everywhere you look is an old-school American brand vehicle, ranging from Oldsmobile to Chevrolet, Buick to Ford with a nice sampling of Chrysler’s old Plymouth brand. There’s even a few Russian Volgas thrown in the mix. These are all vehicles that the majority of American car lovers would spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on—and they are used as Cubans’ everyday vehicles.
Old cars in Havana
This stuck-in-time feeling Cuba has generated is the result of a four-decade-long grudge the country’s late leader, Fidel Castro, held against the United States. Though the island floats only 90 miles away from Key West, Florida, Castro had placed a ban on foreign vehicle imports, making it nearly impossible to buy a brand-new, foreign-made vehicle. It also made it difficult to buy new parts and fuel for the old-school American cars Cuba is known for.
As a result, not only do Cuban citizens drive vehicles straight out of the 1950s, but these vehicles are kept running through a hodgepodge of hand-built, improvised parts. If that’s not innovation, I’m not sure what is.
Old Cars in Havana
Right now, Cuba is on the brink of becoming like every other country in the world. Raúl Castro, Fidel’s brother, has abolished the need for permission to purchase a foreign-made car. This is the first time the ban has been relaxed since its implementation after the 1959 Cuban revolution. So now, Cuban consumers can purchase more modern vehicles for their garage — if they can pay the hefty price.
While this new law is terrific news for Cuban citizens, it’s difficult to fathom a Cuba without its classic cars. Do you think Cuba will stick to its old ways, driving only classic cars? Share your thoughts with us below.
If you want to take a step back into automotive time, then you need to go to Cuba. That’s a rule in the automotive industry. Havana itself is beautiful, with its brightly colored—if slightly dusty—buildings and milling streets, but there is nothing quite as beautiful as seeing a line of classic cars sitting at an intersection like it’s no big deal.
Antique Cuban autos: The classics of yesteryear in Havana
In Cuba, classic cars are a marvel and it is impressive to see how well-maintained some of them are. However, there is a risk of serious accidents because of a lack of spare parts required for the repair of these classics. The vehicles, which have dangerously high emissions, also consume excessive amounts of fuel. Despite all of this, there is no place in the world like Cuba to see these amazing classic cars of the past.

[00:00:11,786]
Today we will speak about the classic cars that run through our streets. It is true that they are splendid and astonishing to see how some are so well cared for. At least, that is what is thought by those who visit us.
What is your impression of the cars of Cuba? This type of antique car? The truth is that I am very impressed by classic vehicles; it is one of the things that motivated me to come to Cuba. I am from Honduras and well, it has been many years since I have come, precisely for this; because classic cars impress me.
[00:00:44,677]
Does any other country in the world exist that has such a big quantity of antique vehicles in total? The ones I have visited, no. I have visited various countries. In Mexico there are some and others, but not like here. Here, is where the majority of the most impressive vehicles are.
What cannot be seen at plain sight is the work and the steps that the owners go through to maintain them in shape; shortages of parts that are no longer manufactured, and the excessive amount of fuel that these cars consume.
[00:01:15,132]
Many of the hired drivers claim that their earnings are very low, because the rest are due to the repairs.
Do you think that this type of car is cost-effective for an under developed country? No, surely not. For nothing. And is it very hard to get spare parts? Very. Do you think that a solution should be found to renew these cars, or an agreement? Yes, of course. Yes, of course, an agreement. For example, a proposal would be?
[00:01:45,642]
A proposal with an agency of another country that could, say, buy cars from there and exchange them for these, better ones. And have you heard any talk of some other country with a high index rate of old cars like this, in the world? Not exactly, not to speak of, no. So, do you consider Cuba to be a rolling Museum? Yes. Absolutely.
However, we can observe how fuel is literally wasted in these cars.
[00:02:15,421]
When the world is committed to more economical and less polluting models. And even hybrids with solar energy. It is true that they solve a big transportation problem in the city and the rest of the country. But at what cost? Carbon monoxide is a gas that is flammable and highly toxic. It can cause death when breathed in at high levels.
[00:02:45,770]
It is produced by the incomplete combustion of substances such as gas, gasoline, kerosene, petroleum, etc.
And most of these cars emit them, causing a major problem for the environment and for human beings.
Not counting the brake system, which in the majority of cases, are repaired with adapted parts. Almost none of these cars have their original parts.
[00:03:16,958]
That which could potentially lead to an accident.
Preserving the antiquities and the history of a country is beneficial for humanity to learn from the past.
[00:03:29,280]
But, always by creating and not by destroying for the enjoyment of the future generations.

This is perfect. Imagine, this is an old engine. It's hard, but we do find the parts and we get it running. For example, this carbarator here is from a Nissan B-12 with a Racing Purifier, which is pretty modern and works for me. You can see how it runs. It runs smoothly and with no problems. The radiator is from a Mitsubishi. The alternator is from a Toyota. The brakes are Toyota. Well, it's all made-up, but they work fine. What else can I say? The sacrifice made by the people whom have these cars, I believe, is beyond measure. It is something extraordiary. When you see one of these cars on the road, you have to imagine: After 50 years, how does it run? They run with these parts here.

24. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Manuel Li, Cuban Mechanic:
This is a 1939 Ford body. We already switched out the chasis and the mechanics. We are now mounting the steering mechanism which is a graft from several different cars. The servo is Toyota and the brakes are Toyota and the suspension is Chevrolet. I want it to ride like a modern car even though it's a car from 1939. I love these cars and it's a challenge for me to get them to run like a modern car even when they aren't.

LEADIN
One of the first things that surprises foreign visitors to Cuba, is the impressive amount of old cars (many of them true classics) that roam the streets.
More surprising is the fact that they are not part of a classic car parade or collector cars from a museum; quite the contrary, they are regular vehicles in daily use for pleasure and for work.
STORYLINE
Almost all of Cuba's classic cars are from the United States.
And that's part of the reason they still exist today.
When Fidel Castro took the island by force in 1959, the United States government soon imposed a blockade and embargo on Cuba, hoping it would weaken Castro's appeal and lead to his overthrow.
Instead, it lead to extreme shortages which caused Cubans to become very inventive and make do with what they had.
The U.S. sanctions made buying new cars an impossibility.
What no one knew back in the fifties was that Cuba would be invaded by these vehicles forever.

American Classic Cars in Havana Cuba - The Ultimate Survivors
I visited Havana Cuba this year, and I recorded a lot of video of all those beautiful American Classic Cars driving around in Havana, Cuba. It is a car enthusiast dream over there, to see all those American Muscle Cars driving around in the wild. I made a 5 minute incredible special on Cuba. Please help me to identify all those American cars, so I can name all the cars here in the description of the video. Catch a short glimpse of the current day Havana, Cuba and the last American cars exported to Cuba -- in the early1960 - beat up, but still running strong! As Detroit automakers battle to survive, their vintage cars in Cuba may outlive them. Lacking access to original car parts Cubans make their own parts or take them from other cars. In this video you will see classic Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Ford, Mercury, Dodge, Chrysler, and even a vintage Mercedes-Benz still rolling along! Here is Cuban Car Culture in HD Video!
