FBI Opens New Office in Kapolei, Hawaii
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a new place to call home.
The sprawling facility is in Kapolei and allows the 100 or so agents to more effectively conduct the business of Homeland Security and other enforcement operations.
FBI agents are federal law enforcement officers and that means they need weapons.
Right now we're in the FBI gun vault. We have a sizeable armory of weapons here that we use for both our FBI SWAT team and for agents who might be running a sizeable operation and might need some extra fire power, FBI agent Tom Simon said.
But it's not just guns. The new 160-thousand-square foot facility houses the FBI's vehicles. They're called an MRAP, or Mine Resistant Armored Personnel carrier.
And it's already been used.
We had to disperse about 200 people who were cockfighting fans, who weren't being arrested, but we wanted to make sure left peacefully. Bringing the MRAP went a long way in letting the folks know it was time to leave, FBI agent Simon said.
The new facility also provides the latest in technology.
Swipe one's fingerprints here on the machine and watch them magically appear here, FBI agent Simon said. The data from this fingerprint capture can be sent electronically to our identification division in West Virginia where we can get immediate info about who a person is, or information about someone who has been arrested in the past.
KHON2 also got a peek inside the communications center at the new building.
In the main lobby, there is an interactive display that honors agents killed in the line of duty.
The FBI on Oahu is responsible for not just the state, but Guam, American Samoa, and Saipan.

Honolulu Police Department releases body camera footage of shooting
The Honolulu Police Department today released body camera footage of a fatal police shooting earlier this month near the State Capitol.
The shooting occurred on the morning of Oct. 7 when Tison Dinney was reportedly arguing with a man while brandishing a machete and a pair of garden shears.
Police said state deputy sheriffs first responded and used pepper spray to try to get Dinney to give up his weapons, but he did not comply.
Sheriffs called police who found Dinney behind the state Department of Health on Punchbowl Street at about 8:30 a.m. and ordered him to move away from him weapons.
