Most Epic Maui Whale Watch EVER - part 2
Check out this close-up humpback whale watching encounter just off the shores of west Maui! Often referred to as a whale ‘mugging,’ these two guys were extremely fortunate to get the whale watch of a lifetime as they prepared to go scuba diving:
Filmed off of the coast of west Maui’s Lahaina Town, this video was captured from a 10 foot zodiac boat on an iPhone and a GoPro and is one of the closest encounters we’ve ever seen on film!
If you plan to travel to Maui, Hawaii, from the period of mid December to mid May, you’re just in time to witness the Aloha State’s favorite time of year: whale season. The 5th largest species of whale in the world, these majestic humpbacks make their annual journey from the shores of Alaska to Hawaii each year in order to mate, give birth and nurse their young in the warm, shallow waters surrounding Hawaii. On Maui in particular, humpback whales particularly seem to love the shallow and protected Au’au Channel, which lies conveniently between west Maui and our neighbor island of Lanai.
While chasing after humpbacks is strictly prohibited, it’s a truly memorable experience when they take the time to approach you instead! You can see these stunning creatures during whale season on Maui on one of many popular whale watching tours, whether by boat with Kai Kanani and Redline Rafting or by outrigger canoe, stand up paddleboard or kayak with Hawaiian Paddle Sports and Maui Kayak Adventures. Additionally, you’re often even lucky enough to spot them from shore while lounging at the beach! Just remember to always pull over, park and get out of your car if the sudden urge to whale watch while driving hits.
When viewing them from the water, you may even get lucky enough to hear the males as they sing, and witness the many playful behaviors they exhibit on the surface of the water, including fluke up and down dives, blowing, pec and tail slapping, spy hopping, head slapping and breaching.
Truly an unforgettable experience in Maui, we recommend whale season for new and return visitors to The Valley Isle. Aloha!

LANAI HAWAII SNORKEL AND SURF
While staying as guests of the Lanai Four Seasons at Manele Bay, last week we were supposed to go out in the Trilogy catamaran for a snorkel sail adventure. Well, instead, this HUGE southern swell came in and literally closed out the harbor exit at Manele Bay! From our Four Seasons rooms, we could also see the surfers pile into Manele Bay for waves that are seldom seen in this normally calm bay.
Our captain, Ricky, managed to at least get us out on a sailing adventure around half the island of Lanai, passing by Sweetheart Island, Manele Bay, the Lanai Four Seasons at Manele Bay, the wedding location for Bill Gates, and more.
The video doesn't do justice to these Hawaiian waves at Lanai. Some were as tall as the mast on our catamaran! We did get the chance to jump in the water at Shark Fin Bay, but it was way too murky to see anything. Plus, murky water is home to SHARKS! One of the guests on another Trilogy vessel that comes to Lana'i from Maui say two Tiger sharks and got pictures!!! Super cool, but I don't want to be that guy.
After about an hour snorkel sail with Trilogy, we went back to the Lana'i Four Seasons and Manele Bay for a bento box lunch and some time at the beach. I filmed some of the locals out catching these unique waves in Manele Bay. The shore break was absolutely amazing!
Finally, we caught the ferry back to Maui for a nice evening at dinner and then on to our next resort, The Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea.
About Lanai:
You won't find a single traffic light here and that's exactly how the people of Lanai like it. Only nine miles from Maui yet a world away, Lanai can feel like two places. The first is found in luxurious resorts where visitors can indulge in world-class amenities and championship-level golf at The Challenge at Manele and The Experience at Koele. The other is found bouncing along the island's rugged back-roads in a 4-wheel drive exploring off the beaten path treasures like Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods) and Polihua Beach. In fact, only 30 miles of Lanai's roads are paved.
The smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, Lanai offers big enticements to its visitors. From the stunning views atop the pine-lined Munro Trail to watching the acrobatic spinner dolphins from romantic Hulopoe Bay, Lanai is a special place where you're sure to find serenity, adventure and intimacy. If you want to get away from it all, get away to Lanai.
About Trilogy Sports:
When you arrive at Manele Bay Small Boat Harbor, you will welcomed aboard one of our state of the art sailing catamarans by one of our highly trained captains. As we travel to our snorkel spot you will get a magnificent view of your hotel as we pass Hulapoe Bay. You also have a good chance of sighting the Hawaiian spinner dolphins that make their year round home on Lana`i. For a better chance of seeing the dolphins sign up for our Marine Mammal Search on our high speed ocean raft. We typically snorkel at a wonderful cove on the south west corner of Lana'i. The western shore typically has crystal clear water with visibility easily getting over 100feet. Because we are tucked into a protected cove the water is naturally flat calm creating perfect snorkeling conditions. The underwater scenery is only surpassed by the incredible seascape with the 1000 foot sea cliffs surrounding you. After a deli style lunch we will start looking for some wind for a nice relaxing sail back to the harbor.
About the Four Seasons Lana'i Menele Bay
Welcome to Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay. Discover an ocean-side paradise bordering a marine preserve that teems with colourful reef fish and protected species such as green sea turtles and spinner dolphins. Laze on the white-sand beach or golf on two world-ranked courses. Explore this untouched island playground, and experience your own private Hawaii.

The 3 Reasons You Can not Skip Maui!
Hawaii is drop dead gorgeous. Actually. You can't fail on the Aloha Islands. The air is tropical, the water is brilliant, and the food is fantastic.
However that does not imply you can lose out, and scheduling a Hawaii Vacation that doesn't consist of Maui would be an embarassment, especially because of these three fantastic, even life-changing Maui Tours and destinations readily available to you through Discover Hawaii Network.
1. The Hana Highway
Buddies, this is no mere road. The Hana Highway brings in thousands of visitors every year, fantastic them with hundreds of turns along high cliffs overlooking Pacific vistas, running previous lots of rushing waterfalls and over fifty bridges. Individuals fall in love on this freeway. Tunes are witten under those waterfalls, on the black sand beaches. Memories are made forever. Aside from the roadway itself, the town of Hana is the Heart of old, small-town Hawaii and the views of Honolua Bay and both Pua'a Ka'a and Kaumahina State Parks deserve the trip, even if you need an inter-island Maui Sightseeing Tour choice to obtain right here.
2. The USS Arizona and Pearl Harbor (on Oahu)
Pearl Harbor is a place for all Americans and for individuals of the entire world. An attack happened right here that changed America, that changed the world, for life. There is really absolutely nothing like the feeling of standing above the USS Arizona, looking down at its leaking oil, the black splits that still flow to this day, and recognizing that over a thousand young souls passed away in combat and lie beneath your feet. Remember their sacrifice. Climb the decks of the USS Missouri, the last battleship of the United States Navy and site of the ending of the Second World War. Descend into the tight corners of the USS Bowfin, among the most embellished submarines of the war. Hear the stories of the war from those who were there, who saw it, and who still live today, and carry on their legacy. To this day Pearl Harbor stands as one of the finest and crucial public naval museums worldwide, and among the most moving Maui vacation activities. Do not miss it.
3. A lot more!
Maui is chock-full of historical websites and vital monuments, from the Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific, to Historic Honolulu, to the Polynesian Cultural Center and their famous luaus. With Discover Hawaii Network, these sites are open to you, no matter which island your getaway is based upon. Cross-island day trips permit you and your family to hop little, licensed air travels and see the websites that you want, that your trip ought to not lack. Browse through the trip alternatives at DiscoverHawaiiNetwork.com, and build a getaway experience in Maui that you and your loved ones will certainly never forget.

MAUI & OAHU - HAWAII
10 days in Maui and 4 days in Oahu.
So what did we do ?
In Maui we stayed at a hostel called Banana Bungalow which was amazing because they provided tours everyday. (so it's the volunteers who work there we have to thank for taking us to the incredible places shown in this video!)
A little break down of what we did:
0.11 - The one day we didn't go on a tour we took ourselves to a beach called Kanaha Beach which was beautiful and we had to ourselves. I would only recommend going if you have your own car as we easily found a taxi to take us there but it was very difficult to get one to take us back.
0.23 & 2.31 - Big Beach / Little Beach. During the day we relaxed on the beach, got battered by big waves and played volleyball. As the sun starts to set everyone climbs over the rock and the right end of the beach to go to 'little beach'. Every Sunday there is a drum circle and it is also a 'clothing optional' beach..
0.29 - Sunset and Kihei Beach.
Turtles !!! You can see turtles at almost any beach you go to in Maui. We saw the most at Ka'anapali beach.
1.12 - Ka'anapali beach - home to the black rock cliff jump. (The cliff jump in 1.09 is near this area but not a well known spot, nor easy to get to!)
1.26 - Lahaina Beach sunset. I loved this seaside town - it had great shops and restaurants. It is also home to the largest banyan tree in the US.
2.08 - bamboo forest / waterfall hike located on the road to Hana. I am unsure of the name, however this website gives pretty good info about it!
It is a very muddy hike and can be slippery.. I would suggest not wearing shoes!
2.44 - Mount Haleakala. 12 mile round trip. Worth the sore feet! 3.38 - The sunset from the top.
3.03 - Ioa Valley State Park. The hike we did was actually beyond the sign saying not to hike beyond it - we hopped a fence! It was by far the muddiest hike I have ever done and the shoes were ditched very early on.
In Oahu we stayed in an air bnb on North Shore and also hired a car to get around the island.
0.50 - you can find swings like these everywhere along the roadside!
1.01 Lanikai Beach
1.30 - M'akapu'u lookout
1.32 - M'akapu'u tide pools. We parked at the lighthouse trail and hiked up to then scramble down the rock face to get to the tide pools.
1.44 - Koko head stairs hike. Aka one hell of a workout. It consists of 1048 steps with it getting steadily steeper... It is certainly a challenge, but the view is incredible. Worth going up for sunset!
2.35 - Pillbox Hike. Fairly short hike with a gorgeous 360 view of Lanikai beach and surrounding area at the top.
3.17 - Sunrise Shack, North Shore. Amazing smoothie bowls!
