INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I presents a series exploring the quality of life on each island, with residents from each island driving the conversations. What issues matter most to each island? These episodes are a precursor to our upcoming Election 2018 coverage. Our Quality of Life series continues with a focus on the community issues that are of most concern for Maui residents.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I: State House District 36 / Hawai‘i County Council District 7 | Program

This week’s INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I features two candidate forums:

–At 8:00 pm, it’s the race for State House District 36, covering Mililani and Mililani Mauka on O‘ahu. With no incumbent, voters must choose between Republican Val Okimoto, a political newcomer, and veteran Democrat Marilyn Lee, who previously represented the area for 16 years.

–At 8:30 pm, political newcomers Kelly Drysdale and Rebecca Villegas are in a runoff for the Hawai‘i County Council District 7 seat, representing parts of North and South Kona.

On this seventh episode of HIKI NŌ, hosted by Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School on Kauai, students from Konawaena High School on West Hawaii Island discover traditional Portuguese bread-making; students from Kamehameha Schools Kapālama High School in Kalihi on Oahu look into the lives of fellow students who live on campus; students from Maui Waena Intermediate School in West Maui tell the story of a Wailuku landmark that opened during World War II and now serves world famous pancakes; and students from Kawananakoa Middle School in Kalihi on Oahu will show you how to take pictures of food—the right way. Other schools reporting include Maui High School (Maui); Kalani High School (East Oahu); and Waipahu High School (West Oahu).
