Hawke's Bay Express - Experience the Express
In all her custom designed splendour, with velvet covered cushioned seats, generously spacious carriages for comfort, truly tall windows tempting you to admire the abundant decorative detail of the city's rich period architecture, the Express will take you on your journey in style. As the bell rings and the whistle blows, you'll feel yourself transported back to a time when first-class meant swing music, polished wooden floors and crimson-tasseled curtains. This modern road train feels every bit like an old-fashioned steam engine, with the romantic atmosphere straight out of the opulent Art Deco era.

Hawkes Bay Express, Napier, Nth Island, New Zealand
A very unique vehicle in an equally unique city, Napier, Hawkes Bay, on the eastern side of the Nth Island, New Zealand. This one-of-a-kind road-train vehicle is reminiscent of the Orient Express, with it's tasteful design and fascinating art deco fittings and flush interior. Operated by a family company consisting of Will, Krysia, and Will's dad Kit.
The Hawkes Bay Express lives in Napier, a city that was tragically levelled by a terrifying earthquake in the mid-1930's, then rebuilt to it's former glory by two men specially appointed to restore the city. They quickly decided to aspire to even greater heights with their building designs than when the city was in it's previous heyday. The two visionaries looked to the emerging Art Deco Architecture of the time, and decided to employ it in the reconstruction of their beloved city. In comparison to other cities that have suffered similar fates, and in stark contrast, Napier, now known as the ART DECO CITY, was totally rebuilt in just over two and a half years. Take a ride on the Hawkes Bay Express in beautiful Napier, and check out the unique architecture and soul of the city that has become world famous for it's beauty. Truly, one of my favourite cities in New Zealand.

A look at rail activity on New Zealand Rail in the Hawkes Bay area (Napier and Hastings)of the North Island in November, 1994. Included are through freights, local switching and the Bay Express, which has since been discontinued. In downtown Hastings, the railway passes through the middle of an ornamental fountain right next to the town clock tower. Also featured is a chase of a freight between Napier and Wairoa on the now closed Gisborne line. This train has old two axle cars spaced as idlers between modern covered hoppers to spread the axle load on several of the line's bridges that had restricted loading. Class DX GE's and Class DC EMD's are featured, along with Class DSG shunters built in Japan

Back in 1999 a surprise appeared on the Hawkes Bay Express, the TranzScenic passenger train on the Kiwi north island. British carriages then recently acquired to bolster rail services had been narrow gauged and were trialed to Napier.

IMMERSE Exhibition CAN, Napier Hawkes Bay NZ: Bahá'í Bicentennial event Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
An art exhibition with a range of visual artworks that reflects the principle of unity in diversity. The range of spirit, colour, form, size, concept, imagination ... was wonderful; the capacity of the human soul to reflect on ideas and realities and express them in so many different ways is a tiny indication of the infinite. Thank you to all who contributed.

Cape Kidnappers, Hawke's Bay, NEW ZEALAND
Cape Kidnappers is a luxury lodge set atop 6,000 rolling acres of pasture land in New Zealand's Hawke's Bay.
Cape Kidnappers is the home of the largest, most accessible mainland colony of gannets in the world. The 20,000 gannets at the Cape are members of the Booby family, with distinctive black eye markings and a pale gold crown.
Gannets are sized midway between a sea gull and an albatross. Visitors to the colony will see adults and young nesting in rows, carrying out their daily routine. The birds can be seen from September until early May, when they leave New Zealand for Australia. In September they return and build their nests, ready for the hatching of chicks during December and January.
