English composer SIR EDWARD GERMAN conducts a Gramophone Company orchestra of “selected symphonic musicians” in a 1916-vintage London performance of his own “THREE DANCES FROM HENRY VIII”, composed by him in 1892.
The upload was restored by me from two century-old 78 rpm pressings in my personal collection.
SIR EDWARD GERMAN [from Wikipedia] “(17 February 1862 – 11 November 1936) was an English musician and composer of Welsh descent, best remembered for his extensive output of incidental music for the stage and as a successor to Arthur Sullivan in the field of English comic opera.
As a youth, German played the violin and led the town orchestra, also beginning to compose music. While performing and teaching violin at the Royal Academy of Music, German began to build a career as a composer in the mid-1880s, writing serious music as well as light opera. In 1888, he became music director of Globe Theatre in London. He provided popular incidental music for many productions at the Globe and other London theatres, including Richard III (1889), “Henry VIII” (this youtube upload, 1892) and “Nell Gwynn” (1900). He also wrote symphonies, orchestral suites, symphonic poems and other works. He also wrote a considerable body of songs, piano music, and symphonic suites and other concert music, of which his “Welsh Rhapsody” (1904) is perhaps best known.
German was engaged to finish “The Emerald Isle” after the death of Arthur Sullivan in 1900, the success of which led to more comic operas, including German's popular “Merrie England”(1902) and “Tom Jones”(1907). He also wrote the “Just So Song Book” in 1903 to Rudyard Kipling's texts and continued to write orchestral music. German wrote little new music of his own after 1912, but he continued to conduct until 1928, the year in which he was knighted.”
In this recording, cut in London early in December 1916, German takes his “Henry VIII” at a much faster tempo, and at a more lilting dance rhythm than modern orchestras tend to perform it. Nevertheless, this can be taken as the 'definitive performance' of the piece, lacking the solemn pretence of modern performance. The music was obviously meant to be full of energy, fun, and whimsy.
The removal of several bad and hooty midrange resonances in this audio restoration have enabled us to hear far more orchestral detail than was previously possible. In particular, towards the last few bars of “The Shepherd’s Dance” we can just hear someone – presumably German – intoning a barely audible satisfied comment of [at about 2’:47”] of “excellent, excellent”, presumably in satisfaction over the completion of a perfect “take”.

I have pitched this precisely to a modern recording of the same piece, and I find that the 78 rpm disc is playing at 81 rpm. This may be correct, or I may have made assumptions about an accord between modern concert pitch and British concert pitch 100 years ago. If anyone takes issue with the pitch, I can adjust the “speed” of the raw .wav file and upload it afresh at some time in the future.
I sincerely hope that this recording – exactly a century old, this year – will not get me ‘in the soup’ with copyright authorities. One wonders just how old a record has to be, to avoid it. I assume that 75 years is the statutory limit, but the copyright on the music may be more convoluted. We shall see...
The audio was restored from two near-mint pressings of the disc bought a half-century ago by the late Frank Puls of Ballarat, for whom it was a favourite. Restoration took a fair amount of time, with lots of on-screen “hand repair” of imperfections in the original pressings. I only wish that Frank could have been alive to hear the restoration of it that is now possible with digital tools. This one’s for you, Frank! Now, everyone can share it.

Benny Hill - Heroes Through the Ages (1989)
Heroes Through the Ages starts with several Angels dancing to Holding Out For A Hero, (a 1983 hit for Bonnie Tyler, performed here by Francesca Boulter who was credited along with The Ladybirds as Vocal Backing on this show. - William Brown), in what appears to a POW Camp. It starts with cavemen Benny and Bob Todd fighting over sexy cavewoman, Lorraine Doyle. They fight each other with sticks, with Benny winning Lorraine, until Bob throws a stone behind him and accidentaly hitting Benny on the head. Next, Benny and his sidekick are vikings that invade a small village and they try to kidnap Lorraine Doyle and another girl. (The sidekick in this case may have been Duggie Small. - William Brown). In the end, Benny gets bopped on the head and Jon Jon Keefe, Lorraine and Bob run off together. In France, Benny duels with Bob Todd to protect Lorraine Doyle. Benny gives Bob some snuff and Benny walks away with all of the women. Then, a duel between Henry McGee and Benny. Henry's gun blows up and Benny walks away with the girl. We move to World War I and Benny throws a hand grenade to German Bob Todd who holds it just a little too long. In World War II, Benny is a sniper attempting to assassinate Adolf Hitler. However, he is distracted by the beautiful Lorraine Doyle covered in nothing but at a towel through her bedroom window. Benny escapes from some Nazi soldiers who spot him, but is ambushed by Lorraine Doyle and another girl as German officers. They make Benny strip down to his underwear. Then they strip down to their bustiers, stockings and heels and use his clothing as a disguise. Benny is then captured and put in the middle of a firing squad who wind up shooting each other. It all ends back in the POW Camp. All of the girls run off with soldiers. Johnny Hutch winds up with Bob Todd in drag.
