Southampton Zoo 1961- 85
In the ‘80s the living conditions and welfare of the animals, as well as the lack of facilities for the public, gradually became a cause for concern. Without the money to adhere to new changes in zoo legislation, Southampton Zoo finally closed in 1985, to the dismay of many Southampton residents.
Soon after its closure, the Council approved plans to develop the site into the ‘Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre’ that still remains today. The centre is enclosed within the boundaries of the old zoo, but little of the original grounds still remain.
Regardless of the Chipperfield controversy, and the decline of the zoo in its later years, Southampton Zoo retains a special place in the memories of those awed children who visited all those years ago.
JOIN US! Beach clean at Chessel Bay, Southampton on Saturday 30th March 2019
Those of you who are familiar with Chessel Bay Local Nature Reserve, will know that is of great local importance. This area is an excellent habitat for nature and the only remaining long stretch of natural shoreline in the lower reaches of the River Itchen. However, the high tides and winds over the winter have unfortunately brought huge amounts of floating rubbish to its shores and it is strewn with plastic. This is not only unsightly but very harmful to wildlife.
The Eco-Leaders at Bitterne Park School passionately feel that this area should be cleaned up as it would greatly improve the habitat for the wonderful wildlife which depend on this Nature Reserve.
We would like to invite the Eco-Reps from year 7 and 8, along with a parent or guardian, to help us with this worthy cause on Saturday 30th March 2019 between 10am and 2pm. This event is being organised by Southampton City Council who will provide litter pickers, bags and gloves and will remove the collected waste. City Council officers will be on hand to offer help and advice. As this is small nature reserve, please be aware there are no toilets or facilities on site.
• What? A community litter pick.
• Where? Chessel Bay, Quayside Rd, S018 1DP, near Bitterne Manor School.
• When? Saturday 30th March 2019. 10am-2pm (you do not need to stay the whole time).

We look forward to seeing you there!

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
