Hay's Galleria, London, England
Hay's Galleria is a covered shopping centre overlooking Tower Bridge. Back in the 1850s it's original purpose was that of a landing spot for deliveries from ships from all over the world. Nowadays it's filled with craft and market stalls centered around a magnificent 60ft kinetic sculpture by David Kemp.
Hay's Galleria is a great sight not be missed when visiting London. Find all the practical information to plan your London visit on the Visit Europe Guide website.
Amazing Hay's Galleria London ( Hay's Wharf) - UK by Rooms and Menus
Hay's Galleria London - Places to Visit in London
Did you ever hear about Hay's Galleria in London? This is a mixed used building in the London Borough of Southwark that is situated on the south bank of the River Thames and which features offices, restaurants, shops and even flats.
The place where Hay's Galleria is located now was originally a warehouse and associated wharf (Hay's Wharf) for the port of London and it was redeveloped back in the 1980's. The name Hay actually came from the owner of the whole place who was named, Alexander Hay, who acquired the property then a brewhouse back in 1651.
Hay's Galleria old history - when it was still a wharf - started when it was one of the chief delivery points for ships bringing tea to the city of London, and not just that, but at its height, about 80% of the dry products passed through it into London and that was actually the reason why it was then named Larder of London.
Due to the hard times which London passed by, Hay's wharf was actually destroyed two different times, the first was during the great fire of Southwark but it was rebuilt after and used for the same purpose again, and the second was during the Second World War when it was bombed and destroyed and it was no longer used for the same purpose because ships went into deeper water ports, and that was when the wharf was actually closed.
Since that time, the redevelopment of Hay's Galleria started and that was when the decision to retain the dock and restore its tea and produce warehouses surrounding it to provide office accommodations and houses. The design of the whole place started with permanently closing the doors of the dock, covering the impounded area with a floor to the sill of the wharf sides and the entire place was covered with a glass roof which was designed by the young architect Arthur Timothy.
From the things that visitors will find inside Hay's Galleria, there is The Navigators sculpture by David Kemp which is found in the middle of the fountain that is found at the centre of the galleria. This moving 60 ft bronze sculpture of the ship was unveiled in 1987 to commemorate the Galleria's shipping history.
While walking through Hay's Galleria, you will find shops and small booths that sell you different types of products and which you might even find them all interesting to check. There are actually some reasons behind turning this place into a touristic destination and which is the panoramic views that it could offer over the city of London from the riverside, and the location between London City Hall and Southwark Cathedral.
For a very long period of time, this place housed things that called out for visitors, even those who are Londoners. For twenty years, it housed a year-round market, which as called the Hay's Galleria Market, and which operated seven days a week. It also had a resident artist and for more than two decades it was home to several permanent independent traders, long-term tenants of St. Martin's Property Corporation, selling souvenir, touristic apparel, and jewelry from traditional barrows positioned in fixed locations in the Galleria. Recently these barrows were removed and then re-positioned once again in 2014, and in 2017 there were only 8 barrows found in the Galleria.
Walking around the streets of London and coming to explore all the different streets and places which are found in it, we should say that every single part carries a story behind for the tourists to explore and know more about and understand that it is not just about the museums and the old buildings, but it is also about the streets and even the traditions of the place.
We have been to a number of places in London which we believe the attention should be given to a little bit, such as the Kensington Palace for example ( as well as the Kensington Gardens ( Albert Memorial ( Churchill War Rooms ( and checking HMS Belfast which is located in London (
These different places and attractions will always come in addition to those which people will visit without even thinking, like Big Ben ( Buckingham Palace ( London Eye ( and St. Paul's Cathedral for example ( because these places have been always recognized as the most famous when it comes to this beautiful city of fog.
If you are going to visit London anytime soon, don't forget to add Hay's Galleria to the list of places which you will pass by and check, because you will love every single part of it and you will also enjoy listening to its history.

Hay's Wharf
Hay's Galleria is named after its original owner, the merchant Alexander Hay, who acquired the property – then a brewhouse – in 1651. In around 1840 John Humphrey Jnr acquired a lease on the property.[1] He asked William Cubitt (who was father-in-law to two of Humphrey's sons) to convert it into a 'wharf', in fact an enclosed dock, in 1856 and it was renamed Hay's Wharf.
During the nineteenth century, the wharf was one of the chief delivery points for ships bringing tea to the Pool of London. At its height, 80% of the dry produce imported to London passed through the wharf, and on this account the Wharf was nicknamed 'the Larder of London'. The Wharf was largely rebuilt following the Great Fire of Southwark in June 1861 and then continued in use for nearly a century until it was badly bombed in September 1940 during the Second World War.The progressive adoption of containerisation during the 1960s led to the shipping industry moving to deep water ports further down the Thames and the subsequent closure of Hay's Wharf in 1970.
Redevelopment
The Navigators, 1987, a sculpture by David Kemp
In the 1980s, with the increasing urban regeneration of the Thames Corridor and nearby London Docklands, the majority of the area was acquired by the St Martin's Property Corporation, the real estate arm of the State of Kuwait. The easterly end of the site was developed as London Bridge City of which Hay's Galleria' forms part. The decision was made to retain the dock and to restore its tea and produce warehouses surrounding it to provide office accommodation and shops. The dock gates were permanently closed, the 'impounded' area of the dock was covered with a floor to the sill of the wharf-sides and the entire space was enclosed with a glass roof designed by the young architect Arthur Timothy while he worked with Michael Twigg Brown Architects. This scheme was implemented by Twigg Brown Architects as part of their masterplan for the renewal strategy. In a fountain at the centre of the Galleria is a 60 ft moving bronze sculpture of a ship, called 'The Navigators' by sculptor David Kemp, unveiled in 1987 to commemorate the Galleria's shipping heritage.
The development was supported by the London Docklands Development Corporation. After its completion and opening in 1987, Hays Galleria became the first new visitor attraction of that period on the south of the river.
Activities
Office tenants have included the UK social work regulator, the General Social Care Council, and the Social Care Institute for Excellence. The pub at the riverside entrance, 'The Horniman at Hay's', is named to commemorate one of the main tea-producing companies associated with the trade here.
Due to its location on the southern Thames Path, its panoramic views over the City of London from the riverside, and the location between London City Hall and Southwark Cathedral, Hay's Galleria is visited by many tourists and local workers. For twenty years it housed a year-round market - the Hays Galleria Market, which operated seven days a week. It had a resident artist, and for more than 2 decades, it was home to several permanent independent traders, long-term tenants of St Martins's Property Corporation selling souvenirs, touristic apparel, and jewellery from traditional barrows positioned in fixed locations in the Galleria. On 8 October 2010, on the orders of CBRE the Managing Agents, the barrows were removed. The barrows were reinstated under the new managing agents post 2014, and as at 22 August 2017 there are 8 barrows operating in the Galleria.

Walking through & then a look around inside Hay's Galleria, London - Sunday 4th August 2013
Following the steady rise of the River Thames as the commercial lifeline of the City of London in the mid 1850's - Sir William Cubitt was commissioned to build a new wharf around an enclosed dock.
Ships from all over the world visited the new Hay's Wharf; with the most beautiful ships being the tea clippers from India and China.
By the end of the century, over 80% of perishable foodstuffs passed through the area which became known as the larder of London.
The Hay's Wharf complex has been carefully restored to its former glory and those who visit the Galleria today stand on the same spot where the tall tea clippers edged their way into the dock over 150 years ago.

Unusual and Uncommon Things to Do in London - London Tour
Visiting London is about checking the most historical and visited places in the city, but sometimes getting to do something a little bit different and do some uncommon things will help in making the trip much more interesting and fun. We have some recommendations for unusual places and things to visit in London and get the fun started.
While we were on a trip to London, we went to some unusual places which might not come among the usual recommendations, these include the BFI Shop. The British Film Institute (BFI) is well known in London, UK, and it is a film and charitable organization which promotes and preserves film making and television in the United Kingdom. The shop related to this place is considered a different kind of experience because of the books, the souvenirs and all the other items that will be found there - so you could always add it to your list (
Going further and considering other destinations to visit and do some unusual things in London, playing and having some fun gaming time in Namco Fun Scape is also another option to consider. There are different games and options to choose from when it comes to Namco Fun Scape; there are escape rooms, bowling, ping pong and lots of other options that would bring the challenging part within you.
Some of those who are crazy about specific things in life might know everything that might be related to it, such as those who are crazy in love with M&M's and who already know that they are going to see some M&M's which they might never thought existed, and that of course comes in addition to the other products found there, such as the clothes, the toys, and much more. This is another uncommon thing to do in London that is not about the history of the place (
Some of those unusual and uncommon things to do in London which we would recommend might still have a history behind it, such as visiting and checking Hay's Galleria. Hay's Galleria is a mixed use building in the London Borough of Southwark, situated on the Southbank of the River Thames, featuring offices, shops, restaurants and flats. Hay's Galleria was a warehouse back in time when it first appeared, but it then went through some developments until it reached what it is today (
Did you know about Great Scotland Yard? This might not be a museum to visit in the city of London, but it is still considered an old place given that name and attracts lots of people to know the reason behind being given such a name. Great Scotland Yard is a street in the St. James's district of Westminster. The name came from the buildings that accommodated the diplomatic representatives of the Kingdom of Scotland and the Scottish Kings when they visited the English royalty (
Lets get the fun things started? Are you a tea lover? The English people are and Twinings is one of the most famous tea brands all over the world and it happens to be English. One of the interesting and unusual things to do in London is to visit Twinings and get some sampling there and get some flavors back home with you.
Some of the recommendations we might give could be already known but we still want to stress on the fact that they are really interesting places to visit and go to during your stay. One of the other places we would love to recommend is Sky Garden with the spectacular views that it offers over the city of London. Even though the entrance to this high public garden is for free, you should still book beforehand to make sure that your place is there, they only accept a specific number every single day (
Enjoy a tasty snack at the Cereal Killer Cafe and choose from all the different choices which they are offering. This is a very good place for families because kids usually love cereals and they will enjoy the fact of choosing several things from lots of choices they have. The decoration of the place is also interesting because it gives you the feeling of being in an old-style place with viewing all the different cereal options which they have there (
