Hay Stacks- a classic walk in the Lake District
Hay Stacks (Haystacks) is one of the most popular of the Lake District fells and is where the ashes of Alfred Wainwright are scattered, near Innominate Tarn. In this film artist Andy Beck describes a popular route over this hill, beginning at Gatesgarth Farm near Buttermere.
Andy Beck is well known for his ten year project, The Wainwrights in Colour which saw him extensively exploring the lakeland fells. His limited edition book on the project has ben met with great acclaim and won both the TGO Magazine Outdoor Book of the Year Award and the BBC Countryfile Book of the Year Award.

Alfred Wainwright was an author, guide writer, talented artist and one of the greatest fell walkers.
The Lake District is a land defined by its natural beauty, this walk is a real Wainwright experience. It is the place he chose as his final resting place and the fell which he took his last walk.
This walk ascents from Gatesgarth Farm, then turns away from Buttermere up Scarth Gap Pass that leads you through Low and High Wax Knott. Then there are a variety of different paths here that lead you up to the cairn at Haystacks.
Wainwright’s verdict “A place of great charm and fairyland attractiveness.”

Haystacks circular from Buttermere, Wainwright's favourite
An ascent of Haystacks from Buttermere in the Lake District. Although only 597 metres tall and not a mountain by uk standards it is every bit as challenging as the highest fells in the area. This circular walk also visits innominate tarn where Alfred Wainwright's ashes are scattered.

A winter walk from Buttermere with an overnight stay in Dubs Hut, and continuing on over Haystacks the following day. Heavy rain the first day that turned into snow overnight.
The Lake District National Park | Haystacks and Buttermere
As part of an active recovery day, Abbie decides to take on one of the most popular fells in the Lakes, Haystacks. She walks from Buttermere, following the blissful lakeside path before ascending to the summit of the characteristic crag. The views over the surrounding landscape are some of her favourite in the National Park and a fitting reward after the scramble to the top. She then passes the Innominate Tarn, the resting place of the hillwalking legend himself, Alfred Wainwright, and Blackbeck Tarn, before exploring some the disused Honister Quarries and descending back to Gatesgarth Farm and Buttermere Lake. It's a route with views galore, friendly faces, scrambles, blissful tarns, open skies, egg sandwiches and an abundance of wildlife.

Lake District 2 Day 14 24/5/19 Climbing Haystacks from Buttermere
Today was another brilliant day in the Lake District, climbing one of it's most iconic peaks, and Wainwright's favourite, Haystacks.
We started from the NT Car park, proceeded through the village and walked along the far shore of the lake until reaching Peggy's Bridge. From there the ascent started and we climbed steeply up to Scarth Gap with fabulous views in front and behind us. Then we took left for the summit up quite a difficult path that required a fair bit of scrambling. From the top we head tremendous 360 degree views of the mountains helped by another glorious day of weather.
Then we return via Innominate Tarn, Black Beck Tarn, crossed the stream and returned to Buttermere on the other side of the valley.
A great walk to end our holiday in the Lake District

Fleetwith Pike & Haystacks, Lake District - 16 January 2016
A 9 mile round trip from Butteremere. The route initially follows the shoreline of Buttermere Lake towards Fleetwith Pike. Climbing Fleetwith Pike the route then descends down to Dub's Bothy before then climbing Haystacks. As the weather closed in we then descended back to the valley and retraced our steps back to Buttermere.

This surely has to be one of the best Lakeland walks that there is - and that's saying something! From the gobsmacking views off 'The Nose' of Fleetwith Pike to the rugged and almost other-worldly landscape of Hay Stacks, it's not really very surprising why it's such a popular area.

Buttermere and Hay Stacks Walk - 30th July 2017
Pip and I tackle the evil that is Hay Stacks, on possibly one of the windiest days we could have picked. 1959ft in total in just over 6 hours ... that included approximately 1 hour of holding on to the floor, trying not to die.

Wild camping - Haystacks - Lake District
A really wild night to test out my Terra Nova Voyager. Stood up to very strong winds and hours of rain. Very happy with how it performed. Didn't get a wink of sleep in fear of it being ripped out out of the ground.
Walk from Buttermere to High Stile, Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike etc
On what was supposed to be a rainy, thundery day in October 2012, I set off for a circular walk from the western shore of Buttermere Lake up into the mountains. The weather turned out to be spectacular for the time of year and the scenery was amazing. Here is a little video of the walk. Hope you enjoy
