Beethoven's Eroica - A film by Simon Cellan Jones - BBC 2003 (HD 1080p)
Faces of Classical Music
•
(HD 1080p)
It is 9 June 1804. At the palace of Prince Lobkowitz, Beethoven is conducting the first performance of his Third Symphony, the Eroica. And through this film we attend the performance. Through the exchanges between the characters represented, their words but also their expressions, we are reminded of the complete novelty of this symphony: its length, its unusual accents, its intense emotion and, of course, the disrupted musical rules. During the interval, Beethoven takes the advantage to speak privately with Josephine von Deym. The romantic life of the master is then presented. Haydn has the last word. When speaking of the music, he concludes: From today, everything is different. The camera moves through the orchestra, lingering on a detail, that we may participate in the music together with the musicians. The film is remarkably well made.
Eroica was directed by Simon Cellan Jones, and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique is lead by John Elliot Gardiner. Ludwig van Beethoven is performed with spirit by Ian Hart. He rejoices, he becomes sad, he catches fire, casting looks - severe or rougish - and his anger all show a very endearing and appealing Beethoven. Leo Bill plays a Ferdinand Ries ill treated by his master. The women are played by Fenella Woolgar, as Princes Lobkowitz, Clair Skinner is Countess Brunswick and Lucy Ackhurst is Josephine von Deym. Jack Davenport is prince Lobkowitz and Frank Finlay is Joseph Haydn. Eroica was broadcast for the first time on Saturday 4th October at 21:15 on BBC2.

When Life Gives You Lemons | The Life & Times of Maria Theresa (ft. M.Laser!)
Back again to a country that used be a great power once too, guys! Though looking at Austria now you wouldn't know it, but how Austria fell apart is another story, today we're looking at the time Austria almost fell apart but didn't thanks to Maria Theresa (along with, y'know, her generals and administration and stuff). We've got a World War before World Wars were cool, we've got Cold War-esque meddling in other countries' affairs before that was cool, we've got Carolus Rex who's always been cool, so come on down! Oh yeah and we've got Frederick the Great making Maria's life complicated. A lot of that, actually.
And for those of you who are studying for AP Euro, that means we've got the War of Polish Succession, the Pragmatic Sanction, the War of Austrian Succession, the Diplomatic Revolution, and the big bad Seven Years War. God I love it when a video is actually relevant for once.
Feature History's video on the Seven Years War:

1:04 Yes I know it's the East India Company, let me have my fun
1:09 This is a frame stolen from a short film I worked on and am therefore obligated to promote, which you can find here: I still think the YouTube-added contrast looks weird, maybe you can change my co-director's mind. But man this shot looks good.
1:12 Charles VI did get one son, but he died at the ripe old age of seven months, so there's some more Alternate History fuel to add to this video, as if there wasn't enough already.
4:05 Kids complain about it being mandatory, that is. Not trying to pass judgement on public education in formerly Habsburg lands
5:12 The battle of Karansebes. Google it, it's hilarious
5:20 There are still Habsburg-Lorraines around, though, Europe couldn't get rid of them that easily.

VIENNA BOYS' CHOIR @ höchstpersönlich (19.03.2004) Movie by Dieter Köster
More than half a millennium ago, in 1498, Emperor Maximillian had the Viennese Hofsängerknaben founded. Until 1918 the choir sang exclusively for and on behalf of the court. Mozart, Gluck, Salieri and Bruckner made music with the choirboys, Gallus and Schubert themselves belonged to the choir and the Haydn brothers sang as substitutes. No significant musician did not show up here. After the collapse of the Habsburg k & k monarchy, the Vienna Boys Choir founded in 1924 in the form of an association with the Board. Today the choir is a myth. 100 boys from all over the world are accommodated in the Augartenpalais in the middle of Vienna and trained in four choirs both musically and academically. The entrance exams are tough, the parents' wallet does not matter: in more than 280 concerts worldwide, the boys sing their own maintenance. The film by Dieter Köster shows the daily routine of the Boys Choir on the example of the fourteen-year-old Georg Tanzler from Lower Austria and the other boys of the Mozart Choir. The film accompanies her at the famous performance at the Hofburg Chapel, in her daily classes, during her free time, at the disciplined rehearsals for her youthful opera Moby Dick and her world premiere at the Wiener Musikverein.
Esterhazy Palace in Austria
(Part of the Get Lost in Austria series from 2010... one of my first...so be gentle lol)
The Esterhazy's were VERY prominent in their day and they were among the largest landowners in Hungary during the Middle Ages. They were even considered minor nobility. Their legacy lives on at the Schloss Esterhazy, or Esterhazy Palace in Burgenland's capital city of Eisenstadt.
The Schloss Esterhazy is not just a museum showcasing their opulent palace. It also includes an homage to Haydn, the talented musician that served as the family's personal composer for a large portion of his life. He lived with them and composed in their great hall. You can learn more about his life and work at the modern Haydn museum located inside. There's also a beautiful cafe with outdoor seating.

This movie was originally planned to be a document showing Salvelinus umbla spawning behaviour but turned to be a conservation film denouncing the detrimental effects of the exotic species living with umblas. On the salmonids world Salvelinus umbla is a unique treasure. They should be strongly protected across their natural range in Europe. The main management policies should deal with habitat restoration and preservation. Any practice involving hatchery fish should be immediately stopped. Hatcheries are a real threat to wild fish. Money for S. umbla management should ideally only be employed in habitat conservation.
Our special thanks go to Helmut Kummer for sharing his knowledge on the population of salvelinus umbla in the lake Lunz system. Big thanks also to Gue (Günther Unfer) for finding me a place to stay and coordinating the research plans with Kurt. To Mathias Jungwirth for inviting me to work in these fantastic waters. To the Mayr family for hosting me on their beautiful house and making me feel as another Lunz am See neighbour. To Bernd Puritscher for giving us the information about where to look for umblas on the upper lake. To Daniel Hayes for recuperating my lost camera under the Oberer Lunzer Seebach cold waters. To Rosita Pinter (Kurt's mom!!) for helping us on the music selection. To Paulina Cavaller (my mom!!) for coming home and taking care of my daughter Mafalda while I was away in Austria. Also thanks, to all the folks of Lunz am See, especially the girl who gave us cold beer and hot meals every night at the tavern. I hope to come back soon.
The final voice recording version of the movie was made at the Mediateca Lab (MNCN-CSIC) with the assistance of Marisol Alonso. Previous narration trials had much more beautiful voices and better English pronunciation than mines but were finally discarded because home recordings were too noisy. Anyway the people participating on such narrations were Mafalda Esteve (my daughter!), Kurt Pinter, Monica Pinter (Kurt's wife!) and Caro Minte Vera. My Lab mate at the Museum (MNCN), Diushi Keri, helped me to solve serious computer problems while editing the movie.
My friend Kurt spent hours day and night snorkelling in the upper lake and the river below. He made the decisions in where to locate the cameras and all the success we had recording umblas behaviour is his!
I finally want to thank all my viewers and I apologize to them all for my poor English grammar and pronunciation.
Esta película se la dedico a mi mujer Maricarmen Grisolía. La he hecho en ingles para que el mensaje llegue a más gente y porque mis colegas austriacos no hablan español. Un saludo a todos y muchas gracias por verla!
Viva Austria!!

“Vienna’s history dates back to the first post-Christian century when the Romans established the military camp Vindobona. Today’s cityscape is characterised by the abundance of baroque buildings created mostly under the rule of Empress Maria Theresia and Emperor Franz Joseph who was largely responsible for the monumental architecture round the Ringstraße. To experience Vienna at its fullest we have created some things to do in Vienna.
Schloss Schönbrunn, the former imperial summer residence, is one of the most popular sights. The sumptuous palace with the beautifully tended formal gardens, the Gloriette monument, the Palm House, and the zoo attract hordes of visitors each year. The huge Hofburg (Imperial Palace) was the base of the Habsburgs for over six centuries, and is an impressive repository of culture and heritage.
The splendid baroque Belvedere Palace today houses the Österreichische Galerie (Austrian Gallery) displaying the largest collection of works by Klimt and Kokoschka as well as famous paintings by Schiele. Vienna’s prime landmarks are the gothic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral), the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater, Vienna’s old recreational park, and the Spanish Riding School with their world-famous Lipizzaner horses.
Vienna has more museums and galleries of international reputation than you can shake a stick at: Kunsthistorischen Museum with the world’s largest collection of Bruegel paintings, MuseumsQuartier with Leopold Museum (Schiele), Museum Moderner Kunst (Museum of Modern Art), Architekturzentrum (Architectural Center) and Kunsthalle rank among the city's most important cultural venues. The Albertina is home to the world’s largest collection of graphic arts and prints (60,000 drawings, 1 million prints).
Vienna owes much of its international fame to the many celebrated composer who lived and worked here including Strauß, Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the world’s best, the Staatsoper one of the world’s leading opera houses, the Vienna Boys’ Choir one the world’s most famous. In the last years Vienna has also established itself as a great musical metropolis.
In Vienna, traditional coffee houses, rustic wine taverns and the beloved sausage stand (Wuerstelstand) exist alongside with top restaurants and shops, time-honored events alternate with internationally-acclaimed extravaganzas (Life Ball) to create a unique and very special ambiance. Another special feature of Vienna are its many greenspace and recreational areas such as the Wienerwald, the Prater and the Donauinsel.”

Since its founding over 500 years ago the Wiener Sängerknaben (#ViennaBoysChoir), has been a fixed attraction in musical life. A number of important musicians have been connected with the famous choir. Joseph Haydn and Franz Schubert, for example, have been members themselves. Not to forget about W.A. Mozart, who composed a lot of music for the choir. On January 27, 2006 – the day of the composer’s 250th anniversary, the Wiener Sängerknaben celebrate Mozart with this concert from the Stephansdom Vienna. The Radio Symphonieorchester Wien plays under the baton of Bertrand de Billy, the soloist is the French soprano Sandrine Piau.

Known as the Green Heart of Austria, the region of Burgenland is like a fairtytale. Sprawling countryside, sleepy villages, vines and vines of wine grapes and few famed composers to boot--I'd recommend the Burgenland for the traveler looking to unwind with good wine and good food.
