Billy Trail shoreline erosion, Hayling Island, Hampshire, UK. August 2014.
The Billy Trail is a leisure path running along the west side of Hayling Island. Part of the path has been fenced off due to erosion but it is still possible to pass by.
Hayling Billy - Havant & Hayling Island Branch Line
Last Days of the Hayling Billy. The line was opened by the LBSCR for goods on January 19th 1865, and for passengers on July 16th 1897. Over the winter of 1962 it was decided to close the branch line, the reason being the old timber bridge that crossed Langstone Harbour needed expensive repairs. The company could not afford the repairs and thus the line took its final fare paying customers on November 3 1963. Here is a link to another great video of the hayling billy.

Hayling Island is an island off the south coast of England, in the borough of Havant in the county of Hampshire, near Portsmouth. Hayling Island is a true island, completely surrounded by sea. Looking at its north to south orientation, it is shaped like an inverted T, about 6.5 kilometres (4.0 mi) long and 6.5 kilometres (4.0 miles) wide. A road bridge connects its northern end to the mainland of England at Langstone. The Hayling Ferry is a small foot-passenger ferry connecting to the Eastney area of the city of Portsmouth on the neighbouring Portsea Island. To the west is Langstone Harbour and to the east is Chichester Harbour.
The natural beach at Hayling was predominantly sandy, but in recent years it has been mechanically topped with shingle dredged from the bed of the Solent in an effort to reduce beach erosion and reduce the potential to flood low-lying land. At low tide, the East Winner sandbank is visible, extending a mile out to sea. The coastline in this area has substantially changed since Roman times: it is believed much land has been lost from the coasts of Hayling and Selsey by erosion and subsequent flooding.
Hayling Island has a non-League football club, Hayling United F.C., which plays at Hayling Park. Although largely residential, Hayling is also a holiday, windsurfing and sailing centre, the site where windsurfing was invented. Until March 2015, Hayling Ferry linked Portsmouth and Hayling Island. The ferry was busy in summer in good weather, bringing tourists and cyclists to Hayling.
Terrier steam locomotives pulled carriages along the 5-mile (8 km) Hayling Billy Line from Havant Station on the mainland to a station which was located at the northern end of Staunton Avenue, passing through Langstone where there was a Halt. A tourist attraction — the East Hayling Light Railway — is a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge railway that runs for just over 1 mile (1.6 km) from Beachlands Station to Eastoke Corner with aspirations to extend the route to Ferry Point within the next few years. Oysters have been fished on the Hayling oysterbeds, at the northwest corner of the island, as long ago as Roman times, documented in town records since 1615.

Hayling Island Sandbank at low tide
The West Winner sand bank stretches for about a mile into the Hayling bay, providing shelter from the larger waves for the beaches and at West Beach, a ‘lagoon’ within which the waters warm nicely as the tide rises during the day.

This is a series documenting my walk along the old disused rail track called The Hayling Billy Line. The track has long since been removed and has been converted into a nature/Leisure walk. The trail follows along the coast from the point where the bridge touches the Island and runs all the way down the western side to the Southern coast. Join me as I discover the sights and sounds along the way. I will be filming sunsets as and when they are interesting enough to post as well as anything else that catches my eye. If you see anything that you would like to see more of please let me know in the comments and I try to capture it for you.

When construction of the railway begun in the late 1850s by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) they quickly ran into problems because of a cost cutting measure. The LBSCR planned to construct an embankment on the mud flats in the sheltered waters of Langstone Harbour rather than purchasing the more expensive land on the island. They were given a grant to the mud lands by William Padwick (Lord of the Manor), who was himself behind the plan, however the area was not sheltered as had been hoped which resulted in the bank being severely eroded before the railway could be completed. This came back to bite the LBSCR as when the Board of Trade Inspector was invited to certify the line as being fit for passenger traffic it was refused. This was on the grounds that he found many of the sleepers had begun to rot in the mud flats embankment section of the railway and there was also an unauthorised level crossing at Langstone. The former problem was quickly fixed but the level crossing remained until the closure of the line.
The key component to the Hayling branch line was the swing bridge which was a 1000ft long triumph of Victorian engineering that was able to be opened in the centre to create a 30 foot gap to allow for the movement of shipping between Chichester and Langstone harbours. Originally being built out of timber the legs were later encased in concrete for reinforcement the remains of which can still be seen today. The bridge together with some sharp curves, ensured that LBSCR A1/A1X Terrier tank engines would always be needed; continuing their life right up to the end of BR steam as the bridges severe weight restrictions meant that no other locomotives was permitted to use it. The Terriers and the old coaches that they hauled gave the line a unique and special charm. The line was opened to goods on the 19th January 1865 and in June 1867 the line was passed fit for passenger traffic by the Board of Trade. Celebrations took place at the Royal Hotel on the 28th June 1867 when the first experimental trains, filled with VIP passengers, including the Mayor of Portsmouth, traveled the whole length of the new railway.
The line was then opened to paying passengers on the 16th July 1867. The line proved very popular in the summer seasons with coaches often overflowing as people traveled to soak up the sun on Hayling’s beaches. But during the winter months the trains were almost empty. It was when the line was taken over by the Southern Railway in 1923 that the line had its finest hours becoming one of the south’s most became a popular holiday and tourist destinations.

Flight around the whole of Hayling Island - By drone
The idea was to circumnavigate around Hayling Island with my drone, made up of several flights to ensure the whole thing was legal and safe.
That side of it I managed to achieve.
however, during editing, it became apparent that flights done at different times, especially when the tide was out and sun in the wrong place caused terrible images and no clarity to the islands coastline.
Plus 38 minutes became boring very quickly and so this needs several improvements.
1. ReShoot with Tide in all the time and attention to Exposure.
2. It needs to be quicker somehow
3. Narrative - it needs to tell a story - else its just another boring drone video
4. there are other areas to improve that I'll keep back
so here is the 38 min fail
I'll give it another go in 2017 with a new improved drone.
