Great Australian Bight Expedition | Explore | 4X4 Australia
4x4 Australia’s Big Bight Expedition covered a huge hunk of Australia’s southern coast.
It was three weeks of incomparable off-road exploration from Esperance in Western Australia to Baird Bay in South Australia.
Taking in rugged cliffs, beautiful unspoilt beaches, and the unforgiving limestone plateaus, it was an adventure to remember.

The Great Australian Bight
A visit to the Head of Bight on our way from Kimba to Border Village. We were lucky enough to see a couple of whales breaching.
The Great Australian Bight is a large oceanic bight, or open bay, off the central and western portions of the southern coastline of mainland Australia.
The magnificent Bunda Cliffs extend approximately 100km along the Great Australian Bight from Border Village to the east of Head of Bight. The cliffs were formed when Australia separated from Antarctica approximately 65 million years ago and are made up of fossiliferous limestone called Wilson Limestone. This limestone is made up of a white chalky material up to 300m thick and was once part of an ancient seabed.

Head of Bight ...... Whales
This was one of the highlights of our trip across the Nullabor. The Head of Bight is an experience of a lifetime, being able to see the whales and their calves very close as they swim by close to the cliffs near the look-outs.

25th June 2012 - Ceduna to Nullabor Roadhouse.mov
We leave Ceduna and head west on the Eyre Highway toward the Nullabor. We stop for coffee and check out the Nullabor Golf Links par 5 Wombat hole at remote Nundroo Roadhouse. Later we Visit the Head of the Bight Whale Centre and see several Whales and a large bait ball of fish just below the viewing platform. We refuel At Nullabor Roadhouse and contemplate turning onto the dirt again to follow the old abandoned Eyre Highway to try to see some of the famous Nullabor Caves marked on our maps.
Head of Bight.
Here we have three Southern Right Whale mums with calves at the Head of Bight, in South Australia. This was taken in 2016. On this day there was a count of 174 whales in the bay. This must be the best place to see these whales.
