Residents Who Would Be Harmed By A Headingley Trolleybus Bypass Speak Out
Here I talk with Brenda and David who live in the old gatehouse of Headingley Castle on Headingley Lane, now the caretaker's lodge for St Columba's church, a well known local landmark.
The proposed NGT trolleybus bypass which Leeds City Council want to build would go right behind where they live, a cut a wide swathe through the mature woodland of mid Victorian, and possibly some older trees.
Brenda and David tell me how they feel about the destruction of this beautiful woodland intended by Councillors.
It is interesting to note that despite widespread opposition to the proposed trolleybus scheme, which it has been admitted is more of a highways scheme than one of public transport, and which would spend 90% of its budget on road building, only 10% on the buses and power cabling, Councillors from all parties are conforming to party whips in order to push it through.
I have spoken to Councillors who privately disagree with the scheme, but are nonetheless taking the party whip and disavowing their consciences.
One has to ask why this extremely unpopular scheme, which would be immensely damaging and costly is being forced through against the popular will? And why the Council refuses to engage in dialogue with the electorate but instead engages in meaningless 'consultations' the only purposes of which seems to be to persuade us all that this is going to happen regardless and offer us palliative tweaks to their design schemes but entirely refusing to acknowledge that this is unwanted by the people, in fact it is an affront to our human rights to have this rammed down our throats in this manner.
These Councillors especially are responsible for attempting to inflict this on our communities and our environment. Please write to them and object.
