Heaphy Track - New Zealand Great Walks Track - New Zealand's Information Network
This guide has been compiled by the New Zealand Information Network to introduce you to these crown jewels of our tramping track network. New Zealand's most popular tramping/trekking tracks and a river journey are collectively known as the Great Walks.
Enter a West Coast ecological wonderland called Kahurangi National Park by following one of New Zealand's best-loved tracks.
The 82 km Heaphy Track is renowned for the beauty and diversity of its landscapes. The 4 to 6 day tramp begins in the historic gold mining valley of the Aorere River. It then climbs steadily through beech forest and alpine herb fields, and crosses the vast red tussock grasslands of the Gouland Downs. At intervals, classic Kahurangi sculptured limestone outcrops appear. Beech trees laced with hanging mosses and lichens enclose dense fern grottos, to create a magical 'enchanted forest' scene. Finally as the track descends to the dramatic West Coast, pounding surf can be viewed through lush sub-tropical groves of nikau palms - an incredible contrast in both vegetation and topography.
Trampers normally choose to travel east to west, starting out from the Brown Hut at Aorere. This is 28 km from Collingwood in Golden Bay and 135 km from Nelson. Along the track there are 7 huts and 7 campsites for which you need to purchase a Great Walk pass. The Heaphy Hut is set above the river with views to the Tasman Sea. From this hut the final day is 5 hours walk down the coastline to the Kohaihai River, 16 km north of Karamea. Transport operators provide a shuttle service to the track start from Collingwood, Takaka, Motueka and Nelson. A Karamea taxi service and bus shuttle meets trampers at the track end.
The Heaphy Track is particularly fascinating if you have an interest in the natural world. The Kahurangi region has half of New Zealand's native plant species, including 80% of all alpine plants. Orchids grow on the forest floor. The Gouland Downs rocks are the oldest in New Zealand at 500 million years. Perry Saddle hut is possibly the best place to see kiwi in their native habitat.
This is truly a Great Walk in every sense. It provides a kaleidoscope of interest for the nature lover and is a truly magical experience.

Hiking the amazing Heaphy Track, Part 1 of 2, December 2016
The Heaphy Track is a 78,4 km hiking track, located in the Kahurangi National Park, at the very north of the South Island of New Zealand.
The track is known for being the most diverse of the nine great walks and the scenery offered is truly spectacular.
You can hike the track from either end, and we decided to start from the Brown Hut end. As we were driving up the west coast, we opted for a plane ride across the mountains which offered spectacular views of the track and the hut locations.
We hiked the track over four days, which meant day hikes reaching 24,2 km. This was quite the challenge but well worth it.
The track is designated a Great Walk and thus you need to book accomodation on the track well ahead.
The length of the track, combined with the relatively inaccessible start and end point, means you will be accompanied with relatively experienced hikers. This might be a good thing as they tend to have good hut etiquette and you will have many chances to share hiking memories and recommendations for other tracks.
This is the first section of our hike, starting with a plane ride from Karma Aerodrome to Takaka Airport. From there we took a shuttle to the start of the track at Brown Hut. Leaving the sandflies behind, we ventured up in the hills and reaching Perry Saddle Hut for our first night. On day 2, which was the longest day of hiking (24,2 km) we walked across the highlands and windy tussocks to James Mackay Hut.

Mt Arthur Tramp - Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand
A quick 2 day excursion to Nelson on a (fairly) good forecast to do the classic Mt Arthur and the Tablelands round in 2017. Loaded up with heavy packs to train for Denali, we flew in Friday evening heading up from Flora Car Park to camp on the slopes of Mt Arthur about 2hrs in. A beautiful evening and glorious sunrise made for a perfect camping spot. We headed up in great conditions where the wind dropped to give clear and still views from the 1795m Mt Arthur summit across the Tablelands and Kahurangi NP. Then we went a little off piste dropping down directly across some interesting limestone formations to pick up the track again over Gordon's Pyramid (1489m), finally dropping to our camp spot not far from Salisbury Hut alongside Sphinx Stream by which time the cloud had set in and occasional drizzle had started. Sunday slowly improved to sunshine around midday with a pleasant walk out along Flora Stream past several interesting rock shelters and the cute Gridiron Hut. Eventually passing Flora Hut we made it out mid afternoon for the journey back to Nelson and our flight home to Auckland. Good trip, great round. Highly recommended.

Kahurangi National Park - Heaphy Trail
My walk along the Heaphy Trail from Karamea to Heaphy Hut (4 hours to walk there). Pity about the sandflys. Would reach a beautiful view but couldn't sit and look for long before an onslaught of sandflys were giving me a good bite.
Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand
Kahurangi National Park is a national park in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand, ranging to near Golden Bay in north. It was gazetted in 1996 and covers 4,520 km². It is the second largest of New Zealand's fourteen national parks. It was formed from what was called the North-west Nelson Forest Park.
Kahurangi Point, regarded as the boundary between the West Coast and Tasman Regions, is located in the park, as are the Heaphy Track and Mount Owen.
The park is administered by the Department of Conservation. Tramping, rafting and caving are popular activities in the park. After being prohibited for several years, mountainbiking was allowed on the Heaphy Track on a trial basis for the winters of 2011, 2012 and 2013. The effect of the cyclists on trampers and the wildlife will determine whether the trial continues or not.
