Arriving at London Heathrow Terminal 5 - London Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom
Arriving at London Heathrow Airport (LHR). If this is your first visit to London Heathrow Terminal 5 you should find this video helpful for getting an idea of the airport procedures when you arrive at London Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom. This London Heathrow Airport footage is filmed from the disembarkation of our flight (a British Airways flight from Copenhagen), through the walk to arrivals area where we eventually purchase our London Underground rail tickets to London.
Our walk begins where we have just disembarked our plane and are walking through Heathrow Airport´s Terminal 5 towards Immigration / Passport Control. To get to the Heathrow Immigration / Passport Control area we take an Airport Train Shuttle. The Passport Control process at Heathrow Airport was very quick as we used the automated Passport scanner (we are EU citizens). After clearing Immigration we start to make our way to the Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Baggage Claim area. We quickly claim our luggage and then make our way through the airport Customs area where you choose the red entrance if you have something to declare or the green entrance if you have nothing to declare. Once we have passed Heathrow Airports Customs we find our selves in the Heathrow Airport arrivals. The arrivals area is full of people / chauffeurs waiting to pick up passengers. We have decided that we will make our way into London City with the London Underground (The Tube) and therefore the process of where to buy tickets for the train from Heathrow Airport to London is covered too. In our case we were advised to buy the London Oyster Travel Card, and we give viewers a brief explanation of what that is.
All in all we found that Arriving at London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 was easy and the airport signs were very good in pointing us in the right direction. The only issue / confusing part was whether or not we were supposed to use the Airport Shuttle transfer to get to the Immigration area or whether the Heathrow Airport Shuttle Train was only for passengers who had a transfer flight from Heathrow Airport (the train was for both arriving and transferring passengers).
Heathrow Terminal 5, Heathrow Terminal 5 is an airport terminal at Heathrow Airport, the main airport serving London. Opened in 2008, the main building in the complex is the largest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom. Terminal 5 is currently used exclusively as one of the three global hubs of International Airlines Group, served by British Airways and Iberia... Prior to 2012, the terminal was used solely by British Airways... The terminal was designed to handle 35 million passengers a year. In 2015, Terminal 5 handled 33.1 million passengers on 215,716 flights; 44.6% of the airport's passengers on 46.6% of its flights with an average of 153 passengers per flight. It was the busiest terminal at the airport, measured both by passenger numbers and flight movements...

Getting to and From Heathrow Airport | London Travel Tips | Airports | Mohamed Aboshanab
Heathrow Airport is 15 miles west of central London and easily reached by road or public transport. In this section you'll find everything you need to help plan your airport journey.
First of all let us get one thing out of the way, there is no universal best way” from Heathrow to London that fits everyone's needs and budget.
The following few paragraphs are designed to help you identify the best transfer option for your needs and also provides some tips on helping yourself make the transfer into London as stress free and good value as possible.
If you are still stumped on the best way from Heathrow to Central London, then there is a link at the end where we will be glad to discuss your individual requirement.
When you say 'best' do you mean cheapest way to London?
If by best you really mean the cheapest way between Heathrow and Central London then its simple, look no further, just take the London Underground.
If you are on a budget, the only reason not to take the Underground (in the airport to London direction anyway) is if you are travelling with lots of luggage, are not fit enough to negotiate stairs and escalators with your luggage independently or have chosen your hotel poorly in a location requiring several changes of train or a long walk from the nearest Underground.

Using Underground between Heathrow & London details
When you say 'best' do you mean fastest and most stress free?
The fastest and most stress free transfer from Heathrow to London is the dedicated airport train the Heathrow Express. This takes just 15 minutes from Heathrow to Paddington Station running every 15 minutes.
However, if you are not staying in the Paddington, Bayswater or Marble Arch area it may be a tortoise and hare situation where once you get to Paddington you are still a long way from your hotel. If your hotel is in the Kensington High Street, Earl's Court Road or Gloucester Road area you will be doubling back on yourself and the Underground will be quicker.
The Heathrow Express is fully priced. There is a cheaper stopping train, the TFL Heathrow train that runs the same tracks, is much cheaper, but less frequent and slightly slower.

TFL Heathrow Train details
Most convenient London hotel districts to/from Heathrow
The most convenient Central London hotel districts for Heathrow Airport are the Earl's Court and Gloucester Road areas of Kensington and Paddington.
Earl's Court and Gloucester Road areas of Kensington
Earl's Court is geographically the closest major hotel district to Heathrow. It has the direct Underground link taking 35-40 minutes with trains at least every 5 minutes. Earl's Court Station is unusual in that it is in two transport zones 1 and 2. From Heathrow fares are cheaper than the next station along (Gloucester Road) but travelling into the centre of London Earl's Court is the same price as anywhere else in Central London.
The main road out to Heathrow goes through Earl's Court so a private car will be cheapest fare too from any London hotel district.
Earl's Court has a bias towards budget hotels but also has very good value mid-range chains like Premier Inn, Best Western and Ibis as well as a scattering of luxury hotels including a Marriott and is fine as a place to stay. A few hundred yards down the road around the next Underground station, Gloucester Road the bias has shifted towards larger, 4 star type hotels.

Paddington is the terminus of the Heathrow Express and TFL Rail Heathrow trains. These are the most stress free, fastest and most comfortable transfer options available.

London's Heathrow International Airport - LHR
Heathrow Airport is a major international airport in west London, England. Heathrow is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom, busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic, and third busiest airport in the world by total passenger traffic. In 2014, it handled a record 73.4 million passengers, a 1.4 percent increase from 2013.
Heathrow lies 12 nautical miles (22 km; 14 mi) west of Central London, and has two parallel east–west runways along with four operational terminals on a site that covers 12.14 square kilometres (4.69 sq mi). The airport is owned and operated by Heathrow Airport Holdings, which itself is owned by FGP TopCo Limited, an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group that includes Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. Heathrow is the primary hub for British Airways and the primary operating base for Virgin Atlantic.
In September 2012, the UK government established the Airports Commission, an independent commission chaired by Sir Howard Davies to examine various options for increasing capacity at UK airports. The commission shortlisted two options for expanding Heathrow in its interim report in 2013, along with a third option for expanding Gatwick Airport. The final report, published on 1 July 2015, backed a third runway at Heathrow.

Which Oyster Card Should You Get When Visiting London?
When you visit London you can use one of two Oyster Card options-- the Visitor Oyster Card, or the regular Oyster Card. You'll need an Oyster Card to use London's transportation system (unless you have a contactless credit/debit card), so find out which option you should get before you arrive for your London visit.
**Correction -- bus and tram fares are included in the underground/rail daily capping (£6.50 for zones 1-2). If you ONLY take buses and trams in one day, then the cap is only £4.50**

London Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go
10 things you must know before you travel to London in the United Kingdom. First, the City of “London” is technically a one square mile area, with only 7,400 residents. But the larger london has 8.6 Million Residents in 32 boroughs. Big Ben refers to the bell, not the tower. The tower is called “Elizabeth Tower”
The country is called the “United Kingdom” -- England is a part of the UK. Great Britain is an old name when it used to be called “United Kingdom of Great Britain”
2 - When to go:
Low season is between January and February with average daily highs around 8C or 46F
Shoulder season is between mid-September and November and then again in March and April.
Shoulder Season. Mild weather, light jacket.
Cheapest hotels are Jan-March, but often with wind and constant rain
Summer prepare for thunderstorms and crowds. But probably the best time to go. Average highs are 24C/75F. The “city” can make it hot and humid in the summer.
3 - Money: Great British Pound, aka pound sterling, aka quid
1 GBP is $1.30 or 1.12 EUR
A pound is composed of 100 pence, referred to as “pee”
A five pound note is a fiver(smallest note), and 10 is a tenner
Credit cards are generally accepted, but may require “chip and pin”
ATMS are plentiful
VAT is about 20% -- and yes, they have a tax back scheme
4 - Getting in: 6 airports serve London
Main airports, Heathrow and Gatwick
Ryan Air and Easy Jet fly in to Stansted (it’s about an hour out)
Due to London's huge global city status it is the most served destination in the world when it comes to flights. But some connections may be between airports. DONT DO IT!
Heathrow is home to British Airways that operates 40 percent of flights.
From Heathrow the fastest way in to the city is the Heathrow Express -- it takes 15 minutes in to the city at Paddington Station, and leaves every 15 minutes. Station at Terminal 4, and another for Terms 1,2,3. It costs 22 GBP. Star Alliance Gold gets free Business/First upgrade.
Also can take the Tube, on the Piccadilly line. It’ll take an hour.
Gatwick is London's 2nd airport and is the world's busiest single runway airport
From Gatwick the fastest way is the Gatwick Express, it takes 30 minutes in to London Victoria Station. Also every 15 minutes.
No tube at Gatwick.
A taxi will cost you about 55-65 GBP from Heathrow
Rail fares to London vary enormously from very cheap to prohibitively expensive - the golden rules are to book Advance tickets for a particular train time, don't travel into the city on Friday afternoons and Sundays, and avoid buying tickets on the day of travel.
London has one international high speed rail route (operated by Eurostar ) rom Paris (2h 15min) and Brussels (1h 50 min) diving under the sea for 35 km (22 mi) via the Channel Tunnel to come out in England. It terminates at St. Pancras International Station.
Whatever you do.. don't drive!
5 - Getting Around: It’s all about the tube, officially known as the London Underground
Buy an oyster card
Daily cap, or buy a 7-day card
You use the Oyster Card for busses too
Take the double decker busses, tap when you get on. Don’t tap off.
Peak times are Monday to Friday between 06:30 and 09:30 and between 16:00 and 19:00.
off-peak rate is much cheaper.
Download the Citymapper app to help with navigation
London Black Taxis are world famous
Uber is also an option, though black cabs can be faster, they use bus lanes
Santandar Bicycles -- first 30 minutes are 2 GBP, every next 30 mins is free if you return it.
The best way to get around is your feet though! Central london is quite compact
Make sure to pay attention to the “look left/look right” signs before crossing the street
6 - Food:
7 - Tipping: Restaurants: Standard is 12.5%, 15% for good service. No tip of there is a service charge
Cabs -- round up.. Or 10%.
No tip in bars and pubs for drinks, unless you order food.
Doormen, bellhops a pound.
8 - Language: It’s english, but it’s British English.
9 - Shopping:
10 - Museums:

How to get from Heathrow airport to London without pulling your hair out Tutorial. Located 20 miles (32km) to the west of London, Heathrow (LHR) is one of the world's busiest international airports. Sometimes it can really suck getting from the airport to where you want to be depending on traffic and the time of day.
How do you travel from the airport to London? This short Documentary (almost in English) explains the various types of transport available and the prices. The TUBE, Taxi and Heathrow Express are all explored. Terminal 1 2 3 4 5 are all the same. Piccadilly Line London Underground.
Oyster card pre-pay. Rush Hour in London sucks. UK
You will need to pay a £5 deposit when you get a new Oyster card. You can get the £5 refunded if you return the Oyster card when you leave London. Then you have to pay for the daily price or weekly and monthly price, if you are visiting longer, at Heathrow Station.

Tube from Heathrow Airport to London - Transfer Guide
Taking the Tube (the underground) from London Heathrow Airport to the city is fairly easy, inexpensive, and speedy. Here's my guide to LHR train transfers.
Taxis from London Heathrow to the city can set you back a whopping £45–£70 ($60-$100 USD) and take up to an hour. That’s a steep price for most travelers.
A much cheaper alternative is the train – and there are two options: The Tube (the city’s subway) and the Heathrow Express. This vlog is a guide on how to use the first one: The Tube.

There are six airports serving London, all of which have train services into the city centre. The biggest by far are Gatwick to the south and Heathrow to the west.
The Heathrow Express is the fastest, the Heathrow Connect is slightly slower but much cheaper. Heathrow is on the end of the Piccadilly Line, so you can take the Tube, and the National Express is the slowest but cheapest.
The Gatwick Express is the fastest, Southern train service is slower but a bit cheaper, Thameslink runs services stopping at St.Pancras, Blackfriars, City Thameslink and Farringdon. Easy Coach, Terravision and National Express coaches are slower still but cheaper than the trains. A taxi journey from Gatwick will take around 90 minutes and cost between £70 and £100. A taxi from Heathrow to the centre will take about 45 minutes and the price can range from £45 to £70.
The London Underground is a vast network that can take you to all corners of the city. The key things to remember when using the Tube are: tapping in and out with a contactless bank card is the fastest and easiest way to pay; always always stand on the right; mobile apps are generally the best way to work out your route.
If you’d like to see more of the city while getting about, you can always hop on a bus instead. Just remember that you can’t use cash on the bus, so have your contactless card ready.
But to get around in the most truly authentic London way, it’s got to be a black cab. You can book one over the phone or hail one in the street. Taxi light on and the cab is available, light off and the taxi’s already carrying somebody.
There are loads of apps that can help you when you’re travelling around the city too:
First is Uber. The app allows you to call a cab to your location, specify your destination and pay through the phone. It makes getting around London simple and easy.
City mapper is an all-encompassing app that helps plan the most efficient route across London, offering comparisons between walking, Tube, taxi and buses. You can even request an Uber with Citymapper.
One last thing on transport… Not everyone has a contactless card and some foreign cards won’t work. Instead, you can get yourself an Oyster card. It’s London’s stored-credit transport smart card. Top it up and then tap in and tap out at the beginning and end of each Tube and bus journey.
Sightseeing tours are available by bus and boat. You can buy 24- and 48-hour bus tickets that allow you to hop on and hop off as much as you like. Some will also include a Thames Boat Tour.
Another good way to see the city is to get up high. Top tip, if you’re looking for a great view of the city go to the Skygarden at the top of the Walkie Talkie Tower because it’s free! All you have to do is book in advance.
Many of London’s biggest and best museums all have free entry. These museums are all free to enter although bear in mind that you’ll need to pay for entry to some of the seasonal exhibitions at the British Museum.
If you plan on visiting loads of attractions while you’re here, it might be worth considering a London Pass card. Although the cost of the card itself is quite expensive, it includes entry to loads of the top attractions like London Zoo, Windsor Castle; even the Tower of London.
If you want to see a Westend show during your London break, then we can help you find hotel and theatre tickets. You can check out our dedicated channel or go to our website for more information:
One last tip - check out Timeout. It’s a really great resource for showing you what’s on in London while you’re here.
There’s amazing food all over London and there’s nothing as British as Indian food, so come here to Brick Lane in East London for the best curry.
Head to Borough Market for the best street food. Rules Restaurant in Covent Garden is London’s oldest and our recommendation for traditional British food. For a traditional London pub, head to The Salisbury in Covent Garden.
For wine, we recommend give Gordon’s Wine Bar a try. You can’t book a table in the evening but you can reserve a lunchtime spot, so I really recommend it before it gets really busy.
