Heavener Runestone Park
This video was originally part of our longer, Lake Wister State Park video. I decided to post a shorter version of my Lake Wister video for those viewers that would say no thanks to a video over 30 minutes long. This is the edited video that documents our outing to Heavener Runestone Park during the Labor Day Weekend of 2018 when we stayed at Lake Wister. I have since split the original Lake Wister State Park video up in to three shorter videos but if you would like to see them all together then you can still find the longer version on our channel!
The Heavener Runestone Park in Heavener Oklahoma is a fascinating place for history buffs, nature lovers, and explorers. The park has ancient runestones that date back to sometime between the 6th and 8th centuries and are thought to have been inscribed by none other than the Vikings!! Yes! You read that right! Vikings! The largest of these runestones is a sandstone slab so big that a building has been constructed around it to protect it from the elements. Heavener Runestone Park is a beautiful place tucked away in the dense forest lands of East Oklahoma. The park itself has a beautifully constructed trail flanked by magnificent stonework that marks a 1/4 mile long trail leading down to the main attraction. It is quite a site to behold and we believe it to be well worth the trip if you find yourself in this area of Oklahoma. We stayed at nearby Lake Wister State Park and also have a seperate video documenting our stay there, so please be sure to check that video out, especially if you are an RV enthusiast!
Thank you so much for watching our video! We welcome any comments that you may have and please like and subscribe!

The Heavener Runestone Explained
Jackson Burns gives his translation of what the inscription on the Heavener Runestone really means.
Heavener Runestone Park - Oklahoma
Heavener Runestone Park is a 55-acre (220,000 m2) park located in Le Flore County, Oklahoma. It is located near the city of Heavener, Oklahoma. Formerly a state park of Oklahoma, it is now owned and operated by the city of Heavener, Oklahoma.
Opened in 1970, the park has been erected around the Heavener Runestone, a runestone found in 1923, and most likely inscribed in the 19th century, perhaps by a Swedish immigrant. The stone is located on Poteau Mountain just outside the town's limits.
Henrik Williams, a professor of Scandinavian languages at Uppsala University has studied the Heavener stone, as well as many other such stones elsewhere in the world. He said that the Heavener stone is an impressive runic memorial, but is unlikely to be as old as some of the local legends claim. He noted that there is no evidence that any Europeans were in this area during the Viking era. He stated that these runes represent the Elder Futhark system that was common during 100 to 700 A. D., which predated the Viking era (750 to 1000 A. D.). Tool marks are still visible on the stone, whereas they should have weathered away if they were created in the Viking era. (from Wikipedia)
This is a hike along a nature trail, and then down into the building where the runestone is displayed.
Messages in Stone: Runic Carvings in North America and Oklahoma | Mark Kinders | TEDxUCO
Oklahoma hosts one of the largest concentrations of carved Runic artifacts in North America. More than 6,000 Runes are found worldwide, and present a history of Scandinavian life and exploration in the Medieval Age. This TedX lecture explores scholarly efforts to determine the authenticity of North American and Oklahoman stones, and popular television entertainment programs and corporate efforts to capitalize on a different story line.
Mark Kinders is the Vice President of Public Affairs at UCO. In a private pursuit, he is the vice president of the American Association for Runic Studies. AARS investigates North American runes in affiliation with Uppsala University in Sweden, and the Swedish Council of America, and partners with the Smithsonian Institution and other universities. Kinders holds a master’s in history (University of Wisconsin-River Falls) and a doctorate in higher education (University of Arkansas).

Mystery of the Takeover of the Heavener Runestone Park
Redneck Archaeologist, Jackson Burns, gets caught up in dirty politics in Southeast Oklahoma and fights back with the worst thing for a politician, The Truth!
Somehow the Heavener Runestone State Park became a center of the controversy and when the agent in charge of the park, Traci Coston Barnes, decided to run against the current Representive, James Lockhart in a Primary Election, Ms Barnes made the unwise choice of publishing private government emails from Jackson and using Jackson's Facebook entries in a newspaper ad, Jackson did some research and found shady activity resulting in a state investigation
Strange Locations Series: The Heavener Runestone
Welcome to Heavener Runestone Park. Here, you can see ancient runestone hieroglyphics on what is believed to be a Viking property marker. Truth be told, the area is littered with hidden ruins of Viking homes, makings and other artifacts. Many of these are located on private property within a few hours drive of the Runestone in both Arkansas and Oklahoma.
The only problem is, the historians don't want you to know or believe that these Europeans made it this far into the middle of the North American Continent. Why? I suppose they don't like their narratives questioned or don't want to admit that the Native Americans in the area were aware of it before they were.

Vikings Visited America circa 9th Century ~ Heavener Runestone & Poteau Stone Translations
The translated messages of the Heavener Runestone and Poteau Stone, both found in the state of Oklahoma, reveal historical abbreviated references to Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great who eventually ruled Italy after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD. Theodoric became a legendary hero in the archives of Germanic literature. The Rök Runetone, carved in Sweden circa the 9th century, marks the earliest mention of Theodoric at a time when the Elder Futhark alphabet was transitioning into the Younger Futhark alphabet; runes from both alphabets appear on the stones. These apparent connections are convincing enough to believe the Vikings made it to America circa the 9th century. Symbolisms found on the Kensington and Narragansett Runestones link to the Heavener and Poteau runes.
Further explanations of the Elder Futhark runes profiled in this video are found on the Winds of Jupiter Tarot website where the Velkommen Rune Cards can be purchased Velkommen means “Welcome” in Norwegian.

Runestone State Park, Heavener Oklahoma
So this weekend we took off on a Sunday drive and checked out the Runestone State Park in Heavener Oklahoma.
After moving to Oklahoma in 2013 we bought a book titled Weird Oklahoma and over the years we have taken many trips to check out some of the road side attractions in the book. This was another one of those little adventures.
So apparently in about 1000 AD Vikings came to Oklahoma and staked their claim.
Interesting ????
