Toronto's Caribbean Carnival, Caribana Celebrates 50 Years in 2017 (Lakeshore, Toronto, Canada)
Toronto's Caribbean Carnival, often known by its original name, Caribana, celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday, August 5th, 2017. Caribana was 1st held in 1967, to mark Canada's 100th birthday (Canada was formed by Confederation in 1867).
The roots of Caribana can be traced back to the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival. The Trinidad Carnival is the biggest festival of its kind in the Anglo Caribbean. In addition to Caribana, it has inspired other Caribbean-themed festivals like the Miami Carnival, Houston Carifest, the Notting Hill Carnival in London, and New York's Labor Day Parade, to name a few. But Caribana is one of the biggest of these kind of festivals in the world, attracting an estimated 1 million people.
The Trinidad Carnival began as a pre-Lenten festival when Spain ruled the island. In order to develop the island Spanish administrators invited lots of French sugar planters to settle on the island. Like Spain, France is a mostly Catholic country with a tradition of pre-Lenten celebrations. Lent is a time of self-denial in several Christian denominations (Catholics, some Protestants like Anglicans and Methodists), and some Orthodox churches. But pre-Lenten festivals were traditionally the biggest in Catholic countries, on the principle of 'getting it out of your system' (like bachelor's parties) before the austerity of Lent.
But in Trinidad the local carnival was influenced by other cultures. The French brought in lots of African slaves to work on the plantations. Later on the British took over the island and kept bringing in African slaves til the Atlantic Slave Trade was abolished in 1808. After slavery was abolished in 1838, lots of ex-slaves didn't want to work on plantations anymore or they wanted high wages. So the British planters brought in lots of indentured workers, mostly from India, but also from Portugal, China, Africa, and other places. Trinidad also received some Syrian and Lebanese immigrants. All these people started participating in the carnival, so that it became a blend of lots of different cultures.
In Toronto, the Trinidad Carnival model was changed and took in even more different influences. Caribana was held in summer instead of in the winter, unlike the Trinidad Carnival, because obviously it's cold in Canada. Caribana also brought in all the different islands of the Caribbean, not only Trinidad. While steelpans, calypso and soca are instruments and musical genres that are closely associated with Trinidad, at the Toronto Carnival you're likely to hear Jamaican reggae, dancehall, and even U.S. hip hop as well. People wave lots of flags at the parade, reflecting their heritage. There are flags from all over the Caribbean, and some from outside the Caribbean as well. At the parade I saw Canadian, Trinidadian, Jamaican, Barbadian, Haitian, Guyanese, and even Ghanaian and Nova Scotian flags.
Caribana is a money bonanza for Toronto. It brings lots of tourists to the downtown area. They book up downtown hotels, and fill up restaurants and nightclubs on Saturday after the parade. A lot of the tourists come from the United States for the parade, but many also come from other parts of Canada and from the Caribbean. There seem to be a particularly big contingent of visitors from Montreal, Quebec.
In addition to the parade, there's also Caribbean food sold in stalls along the parade route. I didn't try any this year because the lines were so long I couldn't be bothered. The parade runs along Lake Shore Boulevard, beside Lake Ontario. The main parade is free, but there's a closed-off area on the Exhibition Place grounds where you had to pay $18 Canadian to get in, if I remember correctly. Caribana takes place on a long weekend. The 1st Monday of August is a civic holiday in many parts of Canada. In Toronto the holidy is called Simcoe Day, but it goes by other names in other towns and provinces.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
Charles John Huffam Dickens (; 7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today.Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed readings extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.
Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humour, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, most published in monthly or weekly instalments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. Cliffhanger endings in his serial publications kept readers in suspense. The instalment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback. For example, when his wife's chiropodist expressed distress at the way Miss Mowcher in David Copperfield seemed to reflect her disabilities, Dickens improved the character with positive features. His plots were carefully constructed, and he often wove elements from topical events into his narratives. Masses of the illiterate poor chipped in ha'pennies to have each new monthly episode read to them, opening up and inspiring a new class of readers.Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations are also frequently adapted, and, like many of his novels, evoke images of early Victorian London. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. Dickens has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell, G. K. Chesterton and Tom Wolfe—for his realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism. On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf complained of a lack of psychological depth, loose writing, and a vein of sentimentalism. The term Dickensian is used to describe something that is reminiscent of Dickens and his writings, such as poor social conditions or comically repulsive characters.
