Tianchi Lake in Tianshan Tianchi National Park is a scenic highlight about 1.5 to 2 hours out of Urumqi. It is a small lake in high mountains.accommodations in a high-mountain national park, the Tianchi Lake is a great place to camp.
The lake itself is about 3 kilometers long and averages about 600 or 700 meters wide (2 miles by less than half a mile). It is surrounded by many rugged and forested valleys that lead down to the lake from closely surrounding peaks that reach about 2,400 meters (7,800 feet). The surface of the lake itself is at an altitude of about 2,000 meters or about 6,600 feet, and it is about 100 meters at the deepest point. There is a hiking trail that goes around it.

Tianchi 天池 is an alpine lake in Xinjiang, Northwest China. The name (天池) literally means Heavenly Lake and can refer to several lakes in mainland China and Taiwan. This Tianchi lies on the north side of the Bogda Shan (Mountain of God, Bogda is a Mongolian word meaning God) range of the Tian Shan (Mountain of Heaven), about 30KM (19 mi) south of Fukang and 45KM (28 mi) east (straight-line distance) of Ürümqi. It is an alpine drift lake shaped in the Quaternary Glacier period.

A high altitude respite from Urumuqi's heat in the summer, Tiān Chí (天池), or Heavenly Lake, is a lovely alpine lake 2,000 meters (1.3 miles) up in the Tian Shan mountain range. The pine-clad surrounding hills with locals grazing their herds and snow-enameled mountains are picturesque to be sure.
The summer months bring crowds to Tian Chi, who pay a day-visit to the lake or spend the night in Kazahk-run yurts, which run about RMB 40 a person. Though while the area is a high-profile tourist spot, it remains largely undeveloped. Some of the accommodations are more authentic than others, but the whole experience can be rewarding. Make sure to bring warm clothes as the area gets rather chilly at night. Camping is okay, too, as is hiking up to the snowline. While hiking, beware of loose stones.
