Heceta Head Lighthouse and Sea Lion Caves on the Oregon Coast
Heceta Head Lighthouse is now open to the public, the light is on, and what a view! Congratulations to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department for the incredible restoration job on the lighthouse tower.
Pronounced “Ha – SEE – Ta” by most, “HECK – ah – Ta” by others, yet everyone agrees Heceta Head is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world. The Heceta Head Lighthouse and Light Keeper’s house are circa 1894. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The lighthouse is a working lighthouse. From a height of 205 feet above the ocean, its “first order” Fresnel lens, casts it’s beams some 21 miles out to sea. It is the brightest light on the Oregon coast. It is said to be the most photographed lighthouse in the United States.
The Heceta Head Keeper’s House is perched on a cliff with a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean and the beach below. Paths from the Keeper’s House lead both to the beach and to the lighthouse.
Sea Lion Caves is a privately owned wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary (since 1932) centrally located just 11 miles north of Florence on the beautiful and rugged Oregon Coast. Sea Lion Caves is proud to be part of the Oregon/Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve helping to protect the local marine animals and marine environment. Sea Lion Caves is America's largest sea cave and the year-round home of the Steller sea lion, but sea lions are not always in the Cave. They are wild animals and we are not a zoo so these protected animals come and go as they please, as is their nature. There are times during the year when the sea lions may leave us completely, please call ahead for information. Winter months will usually find hundreds of sea lions in the Cave and when spring arrives, breeding and birthing time, the sea lions will move from the Cave to the rookery areas (the rock ledges out if front of the Cave) and will remain there through the summer.
Heceta Lighthouse, Devils Elbow, Oregon
It was such a nice day that I went for a drive up the coast from Florence and visited the Heceta Lighthouse. It was a fun trip.
Heceta Head Light is a lighthouse located on the Oregon Coast 13 miles north of Florence, Oregon and 13 miles south of Yachats, Oregon, United States. It is located at Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint (a state park) midway up a 205-foot tall headland. Built in 1894, the 56-foot tall lighthouse shines a beam visible for 21 miles, making it the strongest light on the Oregon Coast.
The light is maintained by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, while the assistant lighthouse keepers' house, operated as a bed and breakfast, is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service.

Heceta Head Lighthouse Flyover DJI Phantom Vision +
I shot this video of the amazingly beautiful Heceta Head Lighthouse, beach and bed and breakfast on a windy day when we stayed in Yachats Oregon. It was shot with my DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus. As you'll see from some of the yawing in the flight there were significant gusty winds. I only had one evening so I decided to give it a go. I got some great footage without a crash. Enjoy. See if you can spot me on the cliff.

After touring the lighthouse, I took a short path to get a higher viewpoint of the lit rotating lens and the crashing waves on the shoreline. Beautiful!
Heceta Lighthouse Oregon Coast
It has been 123 years since the Heceta Head Lighthouse put out its first beam of light over the Oregon Coast. To commemorate the occasion local community members hosted a free event to raise money to help restore the historic buildings and put on community events in the future.
Grant's Getaways: Heceta Head Lighthouse is Back
You can learn much about our state by exploring the many towering whitewashed wonders that rise above the Oregon coastline.
Oregon's lonesome-looking sentinels are prized for the scenic moments that capture our hearts, plus the sheer rugged coastal drama they lend the landscape. They also take us back to the state's early days of maritime service and duty. Oregon's lighthouses are historic and interesting structures that provide beautiful and compelling scenery.
Heceta Head Lighthouse, near Florence, is one of Oregon's most popular coastal tourist sites -- boasting more than 750,000 visitors who travel to the state park property each year.

Grant's Getaways: Heceta Head Lighthouse and B&B
As a beacon of reassurance for mariners at sea, Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the brightest on the West Coast. It is a sentinel by the sea that is also a link to another time. That's important because it provides visitors to the unique Oregon State Park-land a rare opportunity to touch a piece of history. It is a towering white sentinel on the central Oregon coastline that's a wonderful getaway anytime of year, but especially when powerful storms rock the coastline with a one-two punch of wind and rain.
