MB GeoTour 40 – Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, Causeway (& Hecla Village) 2014
The Captain Grimolfur (Grimsi) Grimolfson Causeway is situated along PTH 8, northwest of the southwestern tip of Hecla Island, in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg(8, 9 and17-24-5E1, NTS 62P2SW; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 649802E, 5661006N). In 1971, the Causeway replaced the Hecla Island Ferry service, which operated from 1953 to 1971.
Summary
The Captain Grimolfur (Grimsi) Grimolfson Causeway joins Hecla Island to the mainland within Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park; and provides all-season access to Hecla village. The Causeway, constructed from local aggregate, is situated along PTH 8, northwest of the southwestern tip of Hecla Island, in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg. It replaced a former ferry service, which had been captained by Grimsi Grimolfson from 1953 to 1971.
This video shows a causeway was named after Capt. Grimsi Grimolfson, who captained the Hecla Island Ferry (No. 1 and 2), from the mainland to Hecla Island from 1953 to 1971, when the causeway was opened. The 13.4 m wide and1800 m long causeway in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg, with a 70 m long bridge over a navigation channel, was constructed from 1970 to 1971 by Paul Braun Construction Company Limited, of Fort Whyte, Manitoba. According to Bannatyne (1988, p. 5), two large quarries were opened in 1970 on the mainland (in 13&14-22-24-4E1) in the Cat Head Member of the Red River Formation to supply riprap and armour coat for the causeway (shown in Figure 6 of the Bannatyne report).
The $10,000 (four car capacity) Hecla Island Ferry No. 1 officially began operation on September 21, 1953 along the route, shown on Map ER85-1-1 (which accompanies Bannatyne, 1988). The ferry operated until 1958, when it was replaced by Hecla Island Ferry No. 2. The $80,000 (27.4 m long with 11 vehicle capacity) M.V. Edgar Wood was built in 1958 by the Riverton Boat Works Ltd., of Riverton Manitoba. After the causeway was opened, the M.V. Edgar Wood was operated by Captain Grimsi at Lake Winnipeg Narrows from 1980 to 1984, when he retired. On October 15, 2015, the ferry was docked at Selkirk.
Also, briefly shown, in the video, is a portion of Hecla village on the east shore of the island, within the 86 309 ha Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park. According to Bannatyne (1975, p. 19; 1988, p. 5) lime was made from rock of the Dog Head Member of the Red River Formation at Hecla village. The quarry was situated, north of the village, in NE24-25-6E1.

Hecla / Grindstone National Park, Manitoba, Canada
~~The sun warming your skin on the beach...creaking floors of restored historic buildings...sparkling waters surrounding the catch of the day...everyone will find their own special experience at Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park. A peninsula of land, a series of islands and adjacent waters in Lake Winnipeg combine to form this unique park...The maritime flavour of the island, combined with heritages of Icelandic, Anishinabe and Ukrainian cultures...Along the shoreline's winding scenic drive, stop by the turn of the century fishing village. Restored buildings include a church, community hall, 1920s school, an Icelandic home and a village store, still in operation

MB GeoTour 42 – Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, Ordovician WinnipegRed River formation contact 2014
The contact between the underlying Winnipeg Formation and the overlying Red River Formation is exposed on the northwestern shore of Hecla Island in Lake Winnipeg (5-25-24-6E1, NTS 62P2NE; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 665085E, 5673801N). The contact is exposed in an aggregate quarry located on a short hiking trail to the west of the Hecla campground.
Summary
The contact between the silica sand of the underlying Winnipeg Formation and the overlying dolomitic limestone of the Red River Formation is exposed on the northwestern shore of Hecla Island in Lake Winnipeg. The contact is exposed in an aggregate quarry located on a short hiking trail to the west of the Hecla campground.
This video shows the contact between the underlying Winnipeg Formation and the overlying Red River Formation on the northwestern shore of Hecla Island, west of the Hecla Campground within Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park. The Winnipeg Formation-Dog Head Member contact is exposed in an aggregate quarry. According to Bannatyne (1975, p. 19), the basal Dog Head consists of silty, argillaceous nodular dolomitic limestone containing pyrite nodules and quartz grains. Bannatyne (1988, p. 5) stated that thin bedded dolomitic limestone from the Dog Head was used as flagstone for ornamental walls in the Park; and that the unconsolidated sand from the Winnipeg Formation was also recovered from the quarry.

Visit Hecla Island - Manitoba
This video was made for my advertising class at Red River College. All shots were filmed in Hecla Island. This is not a real ad.
HECLA
Hecla Island is just a short hour and a half north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that was first discovered by Icelandic settlers. It was appropriately named after a famous landmark in Iceland - the volcano Mount Hekla for its abundance of marshes and limestone rock cliffs.
Definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Manitoba no matter what the season.
