RIDE 1 - Cycling The Wuling Pass From Nantou
Big Climbing Day
One of the biggest challenges and biggest rewards from riding a bike comes from climbing. A climb represents a challenge - man versus nature - a testing of will and strength. More than just bragging rights, finishing a big climb is often viewed as a rite of passage in cycling - literally conquering mountains. It requires resolve, patience, perseverance, suffering, and sweat. Completing a really difficult climb requires you to be relentless.
On this particular day, I attempted my third 10,000 foot climbing day. Like most big climbing days, it starts very early. Before the sun is up, you're already on the move. It's 4AM in North District Taichung and I'm on my way to the meet up point to head out to Nantou to start the climb.
Cycling the Wuling Pass
This is the road to the Wuling Pass. Most well known as one of the toughest climbs in the world and home to the annual Taiwan KOM cycling race.
It climbs and winds up to over 3200 meters above sea level. It is both challenging and steep - with certain section as steep as 9% or more when approaching from the north. The average grade is 6% over a distance of roughly 35 miles. The majority of the climbing comes at the end.
LOCATIONS
From Nantou to the Wuling Pass.

We checked into our Taiwanese mountain getaway, Top Cloud Villa, for my 30th Birthday weekend and were immediately absorbed by the scenery and fresh air. We spent a relaxed two nights in the Nantou Mountains before heading back home. It was a fantastic weekend away in Taiwan, and I recommend it to anyone who is living in Taiwan or thinking of travelling to Taiwan!
So! Grab a hot drink, sit back, and enjoy! :D
We previously vistited CinJing Farm, you can watch that video here:
The hotel we stayed in was called Top Cloud Villa (雲頂渡假山莊) and their website is - there are lots of options in the area though! I wasn't sponsored and we didn't get any discount, I just want to share the experience :)

TTRobotix ghost+ with Gopro~Chingjing Veteran's Farm and the Green Green Grasslands
Passing native forests, through towering gorges, you can immerse yourself in the fresh air and the scenic wild greenery of the Qingjing Veterans Farm. The Qingjing Veterans Farm is situated at the Renai Township of Nantou County,8 km north of Wushe Section, Tai 14A Route of Central Cross-Island Highway in Central Taiwan. It has been opened to public since February 20th, 1961;its altitude is 1,750 meters above the sea. The weather is generally mild all year round. In the months from May to September, the temperatures averages between 15℃ and 23℃. The Farm produces various kinds of fruits including: peaches, pears, plums, and kiwi fruit.
Facilities in the Farm include: the Tourist Center, the Green Green Grasslands, the Small Swiss Garden, the Recreation Center for visitors, the Shoushan Park, the Guest House and a Stock Nurturing Center. The working partners of the Farm are putting in all efforts to incorporate the Farm with nearby tourism projects, making it an attraction, to provide a cozy and enjoyable nature trip for all visitors.
This wide grassy plain is the most popular site of the Qingjing Veterans Farm; the herds of sheep grazing on the land, the azure skies above, and the verdant mountains in the horizon have a distinct European air. The sheep here are very friendly; visitors usually have their pictures taken with them. Then there is the sheep shearing show, with sheep shearers all the way from New Zeland hairdressing these furry farm animals for the audience’s enjoyment.
