Places to see in ( Nuremberg - Germany ) Heilig Geist Spital
The Holy Spirit Hospital in Nuremberg (colloquially often short HeiGei ) was the largest municipal facility for the care of the sick and (especially) in the old imperial city . It is known as the depository of the imperial jewels , which were kept in Nuremberg from 1424 to 1796. The hospital was partly built over the bed of the Pegnitz . It was donated by Konrad Gross , the then richest Nuremberg citizens, as a soul device .
Lots of dark carved wood, a herd of hunting trophies and a romantic candlelit half-light make this former hospital, suspended over the Pegnitz, one of the most atmospheric dining rooms in town. Sample the delicious, seasonally changing menu inside or out in the pretty courtyard, a real treat if you are looking for somewhere traditional to dine.
The hospital was built in 1339 together with a church. In 1420, the All Saints Chapel (also: Valznerkapelle ) was grown. This was a foundation of the hospital keeper Herdegen Valzner. The forecast by the Holy Spirit Hospital and its inhabitants around 1340 target of an evil joke of were Till Eulenspiegel. 1341 was made a privilege by Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria .
The Holy Spirit Hospital was initially a social institution for elderly and vulnerable people, but also made more than 100 beds for (curable) patients are available. A hospital until the founding of the general hospital in the Sandgasse 1845 existing hospital in the sense of a hospital for inpatient medical treatment was established here in 1813 by the Medical Council Wilhelm von Hoven, from 1829 Georg Friedrich Lochner assisted as an assistant.
After the seizure of power of the NSDAP , Nuremberg's old German architectural character was to be strengthened and the traces of historicism eliminated. In this context, the Chörlein of the bridge tract 1938-39 received by the architect Julius Lincke after an old picture two additional foreshortening and a pointed turret.
After the Holy Spirit Church was destroyed in the Second World War , it was not rebuilt in contrast to the other hospital buildings. The other parts of the building were severely hit by bombing in 1945 . The hospital was destroyed except for the ground floor walls, from the bridge wing stood only the arch structures over the Pegnitz and remains of the outer walls. It was reconstructed here in 1951-53 , again under Julius Lincke, who had been in charge of the Nuremberg preservation of monuments since 1937. The picturesque bay window with its pointed tower was also rebuilt. The Heilig-Geist-Spital is used as a retirement home under the direction of the Nuremberg City Council, a facility of the city of Nuremberg .

Our visit Nuremberg travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Nuremberg Bratwurst, beer and pretzels), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, churches and museums. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Nuremberg tourism brochure, Nuremberg itinerary or Nuremberg, Germany city tour.
10 Things to do in Nuremberg, Germany travel guide video transcript:
We started our day by taking the U-bahn to the centre of town and getting off at Lorenzkirche. This put us on the south bank of the Pegnitz River, where we took the opportunity to browse some markets before visiting St Lorenz Church.
This is a beautiful gothic church complete with pointed vaults, stained glass windows, and sculptures.
From there we walked across one of the city’s many bridges and continued on to the Beautiful Fountain (yes, that’s the name), searching for a bit of good luck.
One of Nuremberg’s most famed attractions is the Imperial Castle located in the northwest end of the Old Town. The castle is a testament to the power of the Holy Roman Empire during the middle ages.
And we couldn’t come all the way to Nuremberg and not try the famed Nuremberger sausage! We went to Bratwursthäusle, right in the heart of the Old Town by St Sebaldus Church.
Later that afternoon we went into Nuremberg’s deep underground on a tour of the historic beer cellars. Nuremberg has been a beer brewing city for centuries.
While in town, we also took a walk down Weißgerbergasse, which may just be one of the prettiest streets in Nuremberg. This curved cobbled street is lined with half-timbered houses.
Albrecht Dürer’s one time home is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. He was a German Renaissance artist across many mediums, but he is best known for revolutionizing printmaking and elevating it as an art form. At certain times of day, they offer a guided tour with an actress who plays the role of Agnes Dürer, the artist’s wife.
The bridge we were looking for is the Heilig-Geist-Spital, or the Holy Spirit Hospital. It’s not a bridge in the usual sense of the word, rather a medieval building that sits across part of the Pegnitz River.
On a more serious note, we couldn’t leave Nuremberg without also visiting the Dokuzentrum, also known as the The Documentation Center Nazi Party Rallying Grounds.
And that’s a wrap for a our guide to Nuremberg, Germany. If you have any other suggestions of cool things to do in Nuremberg, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments below.
